For a 24/7 YouTube bhajan stream that relays audio already encoded elsewhere, a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet with 2 GiB RAM and 1 vCPU is a reasonable low-cost starting point: DigitalOcean listed it at $12/month with 2,000 GiB of transfer and 50 GiB SSD on October 3, 2026. If the Droplet itself will continuously encode video or run overlays and other CPU-heavy services, compare larger Basic and dedicated-CPU plans instead. None of these sizes guarantees uninterrupted streaming or a particular encoding workload.
The key distinction is whether the server only forwards a prepared stream or also creates and encodes the audio/video. The first is generally lighter on CPU; the second needs testing against the actual encoder, codec, resolution, and frame rate. This guide assumes a YouTube stream, not a camera broadcast.
Which Droplet should you choose?
DigitalOcean’s listed prices and resource bundles below were observed on October 3, 2026; confirm current availability and pricing before creating a Droplet.
| Plan to evaluate | Listed resources | Best fit to investigate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic, 2 GiB | $12/month; 1 vCPU; 2,000 GiB transfer; 50 GiB SSD | Relaying a modest stream that has already been encoded | Shared CPU; not a tested encoding or uptime guarantee |
| Basic, 4 GiB | $24/month; 2 vCPUs; 4,000 GiB transfer; 80 GiB SSD | A relay with more memory headroom, or a workload needing more general resources | Still a shared-CPU plan; size alone does not establish encoding performance |
| CPU-Optimized dedicated CPU | Price and resource bundle depend on the selected plan; see DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing | Continuous encoding or other sustained, CPU-intensive processing where predictable CPU access matters | Choose and test against the actual workload; no specific plan is established here as sufficient |
DigitalOcean describes Basic Droplets as shared-CPU plans, suitable for workloads that do not consistently use dedicated threads. Shared CPU availability can vary with neighboring workloads. Its documentation describes dedicated CPU Droplets as providing access to the full hyper-thread and identifies CPU-Optimized plans for predictable, CPU-intensive work, including video encoding. That makes dedicated CPU worth comparing when encoding runs continuously, but it does not certify any configuration for a particular production stream. See DigitalOcean’s plan selection documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate transfer before committing
Audio-only bhajan stream
YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. At a constant 128 Kbps, the audio payload is approximately 1.38 decimal GB per day, or 41.5 decimal GB over 30 days. This is a calculation from YouTube’s recommended bitrate, not a provider measurement. Real network use is higher because of protocol overhead. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
If you add video
Calculate transfer from the total sustained outgoing bitrate and the hours streamed: bitrate in bits per second Ă— seconds Ă· 8 gives bytes, before protocol overhead. Add audio and video bitrates, then compare the result with the selected Droplet’s allowance. DigitalOcean lists $0.01 per additional GiB of outbound transfer; allowances are pooled across Droplets at the team level. Check the current terms at DigitalOcean’s pricing and bandwidth documentation.

Storage is a separate consideration from bandwidth. The listed 50 GiB or 80 GiB SSD may matter if you retain media or recordings on the server; it does not change the transfer calculation. The right capacity depends on what you store and for how long.
Prepare YouTube and the encoder
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow at Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Use the YouTube ingest details in your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and shared repositories.
- Set video parameters if the stream includes video. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Match the encoder settings to the actual source and verify the resulting stream health in YouTube Studio.
- Leave network headroom and test. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate and warns that connection disruption can break a stream. Test the full audio/video configuration and monitor it rather than assuming the Droplet’s plan guarantees continuity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Plan for long sessions, reconnects, and archives
A 24/7 channel is an operational design, not just a large enough virtual machine. Decide how the encoder or relay restarts after a process failure, how you will detect a lost connection, and who will respond to alerts. A Droplet size does not by itself provide failover or prove continuous availability. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour event will produce one complete archive. If the archive matters, plan recording or event segmentation separately and verify current YouTube behavior.

Bhajan recordings also need appropriate rights for the composition and the specific recording. A devotional or traditional subject does not by itself establish that an audio recording is free to use. Resolve permissions for the material before scheduling a continuous stream.
Costs and operational trade-offs
- Compute continues billing while powered off. DigitalOcean says bundled Droplets remain billable while powered off because compute is reserved; destroying the Droplet ends that billing. A stopped instance is therefore not a way to retain it without charges.
- Transfer overages can apply. The included allowance is pooled at team level, and DigitalOcean lists $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer. Include video bitrate and overhead in estimates rather than budgeting from audio alone.
- Encoding workload can change the economics. A low-cost shared-CPU Droplet may be suitable to test a relay, while sustained encoding may justify comparing a dedicated-CPU plan. Measure CPU use, stream health, and transfer with the real workload before relying on a configuration.
- Media storage is optional but finite. Account for local recordings and source files if they remain on the Droplet; the plan’s SSD is not an unlimited media library.
