For a continuous YouTube stream, start with AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 time_delay set to 0 and leave suggested presentation delay unset unless you deliberately want playback behind the manifest’s live point. Add a startover window only if viewers need rewind or catch-up. Then configure YouTube’s latency mode and ingest protocol separately: MediaPackage timing controls do not guarantee a particular end-to-end YouTube delay.
What each MediaPackage latency setting controls
time_delay: shifts when content becomes available
MediaPackage v2’s time_delay moves the available live point back by the specified duration. AWS illustrates that content received at 12:20 with a 60-second delay becomes available at 12:21, while a request at 12:20 is served content from 12:19. The minimum is 0 seconds. With startoverwindow set to 0, the maximum is 86,400 seconds (24 hours); with a nonzero startover window, the maximum delay equals that window. AWS requires the delay to be less than the startover window when one is configured. A delay can increase playback latency; AWS notes it may help reduce buffering during input switching with input redundancy and short output segments, which is a resilience trade-off rather than a general low-latency optimization. AWS MediaPackage v2 time-delay guidance.
Startover window: preserves earlier live content
The origin endpoint’s startover window determines how much ongoing live content remains available for start-over or catch-up playback. MediaPackage v2 documents a maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days). It is for time-shifted viewing, not a setting that reduces latency. AWS origin endpoint guide.
Suggested presentation delay: starts playback behind the manifest
This endpoint setting tells a player how far behind the end of the manifest to begin. AWS gives 35 seconds as an example: playback starts 35 seconds before the manifest’s live point. If used with time_delay, AWS says the two durations are added. Treat this as a deliberate playback buffer or delay, not as YouTube’s latency mode. AWS origin endpoint guide.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
LL-HLS: a packaging capability, not an end-to-end promise
AWS announced MediaPackage Low-Latency HLS packaging support in May 2023. That establishes a packaging capability; it does not establish that every downstream ingest or player accepts the output, or provide an end-to-end latency figure for a MediaPackage-to-YouTube workflow. AWS announcement.
Set YouTube latency and MediaPackage timing independently
YouTube defines stream latency as the time from capture by the encoder or camera until the event appears to viewers. YouTube says most viewers on Low latency experience latency under 10 seconds and most viewers on Ultra-low latency experience latency under five seconds. These are descriptions of YouTube’s modes, not guarantees for a particular AWS-to-YouTube path. Both modes exclude 4K, and lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Choose based on audience interaction, resolution needs, and tolerance for buffering. YouTube latency guidance and YouTube stream settings.

RTMPS encoder ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder ingest. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Test before going live and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube HLS ingest
YouTube supports HLS ingest for certain use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. When HLS is selected, YouTube turns off Ultra-low latency because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range mode. Do not assume MediaPackage LL-HLS output is a drop-in substitute for YouTube’s documented HLS ingest format; validate the exact source and destination requirements. YouTube HLS ingest setup.

Configure a continuous stream for the goal you actually have
- Choose the priority. Decide whether you need low viewer delay, resilience during input switching, or rewind and catch-up. These goals can conflict.
- Keep MediaPackage’s intentional delay at zero for the starting configuration. Set
time_delayto 0 and do not add suggested presentation delay unless you want playback to start behind the manifest’s live point. - Add a startover window only when time-shifted viewing is needed. If you configure a nonzero window, keep
time_delayless than the window; the window also limits the maximum available delay. - Select YouTube ingest separately. RTMPS is YouTube’s generally recommended encoder route. If using HLS ingest, meet YouTube’s segment, playlist, HTTPS method, and byte-range requirements.
- Set YouTube’s latency mode with resolution and buffering in mind. Low and Ultra-low exclude 4K; the lower-delay modes may mean more buffering.
- Test the real workflow and watch stream health. Measure the behavior with the chosen encoder, MediaPackage endpoint, route, and YouTube configuration; official guidance does not specify one universal end-to-end latency number for all such workflows.
Diagnose delay, buffering, and ingest mismatches
- Playback is consistently behind the live point: check whether
time_delayis nonzero and whether suggested presentation delay is configured. AWS adds these durations when both are used. - Viewers need rewind but latency should not be increased intentionally: configure a startover window for catch-up access, while leaving delay controls at their intended values. The window itself is not a latency-reduction setting.
- Low-latency playback buffers: YouTube warns that lower latency may increase playback buffering. Test the selected mode under realistic viewing conditions and weigh stability against delay.
- Ultra-low latency is unavailable: check whether the stream uses HLS ingest; YouTube disables Ultra-low latency for HLS. HLS is also not a 4K option within YouTube’s Low and Ultra-low modes.
- YouTube rejects or mishandles HLS ingest: verify TS segment length (1–4 seconds), no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT, and disabled byte-range mode. Confirm that the specific MediaPackage output is compatible rather than assuming LL-HLS packaging alone is sufficient.
- Input switching causes interruptions: AWS identifies a time delay as a possible way to reduce buffering during switching with input redundancy and short output segments. Evaluate that trade-off in a test, since adding delay is not a general latency reduction.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than managing a continuous production ingest pipeline, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos or playlists looping from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
