Either Amazon EC2 or Google Cloud Compute Engine can host software that sends a prerecorded video loop to YouTube Live. Neither is established as universally cheaper or more reliable for this job. Choose by comparing similarly capable machines in the region you need, checking the actual outbound-transfer charges, and testing the stream at its intended bitrate.
What the cloud server does—and what it does not do
The workflow is encoder-to-YouTube: create a live stream in YouTube Studio, take its server URL and stream key, enter them in an encoder, then start sending the video. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; an EC2 or Compute Engine virtual machine can host software encoding and send the resulting stream outbound. The VM provider is not a YouTube requirement, and the VM does not create the documentary or grant rights to it. See YouTube’s live-streaming encoder setup.
This comparison concerns a prerecorded loop sent to YouTube, not a live production feed or a system for distributing a stream to viewers. AWS’s cited live-channel architecture using MediaLive, optional MediaPackage or MediaStore, and CloudFront addresses a different workflow; CloudFront viewer-delivery costs are not directly comparable to sending one encoder feed to YouTube.
EC2 vs Compute Engine: what can be compared fairly
The available provider documentation does not establish a matched monthly cost or performance winner for one continuous YouTube ingest stream. Compare the exact configurations you would actually operate rather than choosing by a headline bandwidth ceiling or a broad claim about cloud pricing.

How to interpret Compute Engine’s published ceiling
Google documents a maximum of 3 Gbps per flow to destinations outside a VPC for most machine series, with exceptions by machine family and additional total-bandwidth restrictions based on machine type and Tier_1 networking. The documentation, consulted October 3, 2026, warns that maximum bandwidth is not guaranteed and can be reduced by packet size, protocol overhead, flow count, congestion, and other factors. This is a published ceiling, not a promise of sustained throughput to YouTube or evidence of a price advantage. Check the exact configuration and route in Google Cloud’s network bandwidth documentation.
Set the YouTube bitrate, then test the real loop
YouTube’s encoder guidance provides recommended ingest bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For the examples below, those recommendations are not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode or upload reliably.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; consult it for other resolutions and frame rates and for current settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Its guidance also recommends a representative test: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than treating a successful start as proof that the stream will remain stable.
A practical way to choose and estimate cost
- Set the target first. Decide your output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, and confirm the encoder can handle the format. Use YouTube’s current settings recommendations as the starting point.
- Match the cloud configurations. Choose the intended region and comparable instance capability on EC2 and Compute Engine. Account for the encoder’s CPU or GPU needs instead of comparing instance prices alone.
- Build a full monthly estimate. Price a continuously running instance and add persistent disk, public networking, IP, and other applicable charges. Check each provider’s current outbound-transfer rules for the actual destination; the cited material does not establish that traffic to YouTube is free on either provider.
- Test the route and stream. Run the intended encoder and representative content at the target bitrate. Check YouTube stream health and observe whether upload performance remains adequate; a published network ceiling is not a substitute for this test.
- Plan for unattended operation. Decide how you will detect a failed encoder or dropped connection, restart the sending process, and confirm that the stream has recovered. Include the monitoring and recovery work in your operational comparison.
- Recheck before committing. Cloud instance prices and network billing can change. Recalculate using current provider terms for your region, machine, runtime, and traffic pattern.
Without a current, matched calculation, there is no sound basis here to name EC2 or Compute Engine as the cheaper option. Likewise, the material does not establish a reliability winner. Your result depends on the selected machine, encoder, route, billing terms, and recovery plan.

Archives, rights, and monetization are separate questions
Do not assume a long broadcast will be fully archived
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance does not promise a complete archive for a loop lasting longer than 12 hours. If you need a dependable replay, check the current Live Control Room behavior for your planned duration and keep an independent source copy. Source: YouTube Help on live-stream archives.
Looping does not make a video eligible for monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. A policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under the inauthentic-content policy. Content is expected to be original and authentic; repetitive material with little variation, commentary, or educational value may not be eligible. Reused-content review is also separate from copyright clearance, and YouTube reviews channels and content against its policies. No hosting choice changes those standards or guarantees monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Clear the rights for the stream and any archive
YouTube’s livestream terms say content providers represent that they hold the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights, and must comply with applicable laws. Check rights for the documentary footage, soundtrack, and any other included material before streaming or relying on an archive. Source: YouTube Live terms.
