There is no fixed data amount: estimate it from the aggregate bitrate of the streams MediaPackage receives and how long they run. As a decimal-unit planning rule, GB per hour ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45, or GB per day ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. Add simultaneous input renditions together, and count both copies if redundant inputs are enabled. These figures estimate incoming transfer; they do not automatically describe MediaPackage output or YouTube viewer delivery.
Estimate continuous input data from bitrate
For a sustained bitrate, multiply the aggregate input bitrate by the runtime using the approximate decimal conversion below. The result is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed measured total: variable bitrate, protocol overhead, and whether a display uses decimal GB or binary units can change the observed figure.

For example, at a constant 6 Mbps aggregate input rate, one copy is approximately 2.7 GB per hour or 64.8 GB per day. Two identical redundant copies would carry approximately 5.4 GB per hour or 129.6 GB per day in total. These are arithmetic estimates from the bitrate rule, not measurements of a particular stream.
Include every simultaneous rendition
If the encoder sends multiple input renditions at the same time, add their bitrates before calculating. For instance, inputs at 4 Mbps and 2 Mbps total 6 Mbps; use 6 Mbps in the formula, not either rendition on its own.

Account for redundant input copies
If redundancy sends identical streams to separate ingest URLs, count both copies when estimating network transfer into MediaPackage. AWS describes MediaPackage as using one active input source and switching to the other on failover, but the duplicate copy still travels to the service. Redundancy can therefore double incoming transfer when both copies run at the same bitrate.
Separate ingest, MediaPackage output, and YouTube delivery
MediaPackage receives content from an upstream encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, and dynamically packages output when a downstream client or CDN requests it. An endpoint can provide different streaming formats, and its configured tracks determine what it outputs. AWS describes a channel as “the entry point for a content stream into MediaPackage.” AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 channel documentation.

- Encoder to MediaPackage: estimate incoming transfer from the aggregate input bitrate, including redundant copies where enabled.
- MediaPackage to YouTube: count this as MediaPackage egress only if the architecture actually requests MediaPackage output and sends it to YouTube.
- YouTube to viewers: this is not automatically MediaPackage egress. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so viewer delivery depends on YouTube’s delivery path rather than simply the encoder’s input rate.
The phrase “YouTube stream” does not by itself establish which of these data legs is being measured. Do not use the input estimate as a proxy for output or audience delivery unless the deployment path and metric support that interpretation.
AWS’s worked example and YouTube encoder guidance
AWS’s deployment guide illustrates its conversion with an aggregate input of 4.2 Mbps, approximately 1.85 GB per hour, or 3.70 GB per hour for a redundant pair. The guide’s publication date is not stated on the cited page. Its binary-unit conversion convention explains small differences from the decimal planning rule above; this is an example calculation, not a universal usage rate or current price quote. Choose the encoder bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube’s official guidance gives, for example, H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1/H.265 it lists 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of MediaPackage usage. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the full codec- and format-specific guidance. YouTube also notes it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers.
Measure actual MediaPackage egress
When the question is how many bytes MediaPackage actually sent downstream, use CloudWatch’s live EgressBytes metric, which AWS documents as the bytes successfully sent by MediaPackage for each request. Metrics are published every minute or more frequently; an interval without requests has no output data. Sum the metric values across the period and the relevant requests to quantify observed egress. This measures output traffic, not encoder-to-MediaPackage ingest. See AWS MediaPackage CloudWatch metrics.

What you need for a deployment-specific estimate
- The bitrate of each input rendition, added together.
- The continuous runtime you want to estimate, such as hours or days.
- Whether the encoder sends redundant copies, and the bitrate of each copy.
- Which leg matters: ingest, MediaPackage egress, or YouTube viewer delivery.
- The unit convention used by the monitoring or billing display: decimal GB or binary GiB.
With those details, apply the bitrate rule for an estimate, or use the relevant byte metric for observed traffic. AWS cost depends on the deployment and its configuration; the example conversion above is not a price quote.
