AWS Elemental MediaPackage

How to Send an FFmpeg Playlist to AWS Elemental MediaPackage for YouTube Live

For a playlist-based YouTube Live stream, send FFmpeg to YouTube’s configured ingest URL. MediaPackage receives an upstream feed and serves packaged output downstream; its playback endpoint is not a YouTube push destination.

You generally don’t send an FFmpeg playlist to a MediaPackage playback endpoint for YouTube Live. MediaPackage is designed to receive a live stream from an upstream encoder and make packaged output available to downstream players or CDNs. YouTube Live, by contrast, expects an encoder to send to the ingest destination configured in YouTube Live Control Room. For a playlist source, the direct route is FFmpeg to YouTube; use MediaPackage separately if your architecture also needs its packaged output.

Why a MediaPackage endpoint is not the YouTube destination

AWS distinguishes MediaPackage’s input from its output. An upstream encoder sends a live stream to a MediaPackage channel. A downstream device or CDN requests the packaged content through an endpoint output URL. The AWS Elemental MediaPackage User Guide describes that endpoint as the URL through which a downstream device requests content.

YouTube Live uses a different workflow: configure an encoder with the server URL and stream key shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room. The documented roles do not establish a MediaPackage endpoint as a push destination for YouTube Live, nor do they establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. Don’t paste a MediaPackage playback URL into an encoder field intended for YouTube ingest, or treat it as a forwarding address.

Choose the YouTube ingest protocol

Option When it may fit Requirements and tradeoffs
RTMP or RTMPS Standard encoder ingest when the workflow supports it. Use the current server URL and matching stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. It is a continuous-streaming path; YouTube describes HLS as having higher latency than RTMP.
HLS When the stream configuration calls for HLS, including cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, subject to YouTube’s HLS support. Use YouTube’s HLS ingest URL and satisfy its output rules: HTTPS POST or PUT; MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds; rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments; no byte ranges; and no encryption other than HTTPS. Segment-based delivery has higher latency than RTMP.

These are choices for sending an encoder feed to YouTube. Neither turns a MediaPackage playback endpoint into an encoder ingest destination. The precise protocol available depends on the stream you select in Live Control Room.

Send a playlist-based source to YouTube

Use FFmpeg as the encoder and configure it to send to the YouTube ingest destination, not to MediaPackage’s egress URL. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the playlist format, its media and the FFmpeg build. The documented workflow establishes the destination and YouTube’s protocol requirements, but does not verify one universal playlist-demuxer command or set of FFmpeg options. Don’t assume a command written for a different playlist or build will work unchanged.

  1. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream you intend to use and select its ingest protocol. Copy the current server URL and the corresponding stream key for RTMP(S), or the HLS ingest URL and applicable settings if you chose HLS. Do not reuse credentials from another event or hard-code them in a public example.
  2. Configure FFmpeg for the actual playlist and input files. Confirm the playlist format, file paths, codecs, timestamps and audio/video tracks against the FFmpeg build and the media you are sending. Make the output protocol match the YouTube stream’s selected ingest protocol. For HLS output, ensure the generated transport-stream segments, rolling playlist and HTTP requests comply with YouTube’s requirements in the table above.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Avoid placing it in public scripts, screenshots or logs; restrict access to any configuration file that contains it.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview. If the event is scheduled, wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed and show its preview before selecting Go live in Live Control Room.
  5. Test picture and sound before the event. Verify that video moves, audio is present and synchronized, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. A process that is running locally does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a usable feed.

Where MediaPackage fits if you need it too

If the production also needs MediaPackage, keep its ingest and playback sides separate. Configure an upstream encoder to send a live feed to the MediaPackage channel; downstream playback or CDN delivery uses the relevant MediaPackage endpoint. If YouTube also needs the program, arrange a distinct feed to YouTube from the encoder or an appropriate distribution system. That is an architectural approach based on the separate ingest and egress roles; it is not a vendor-verified direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube integration.

MediaPackage console and API details can differ between MediaPackage versions and AWS regions or accounts. Confirm the steps for the version and region you actually use rather than substituting a playback endpoint for the channel’s ingest destination.

Troubleshoot the common routing and ingest mistakes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the stream The encoder is pointed at a MediaPackage playback endpoint, a stale URL, or the wrong protocol destination. Copy the current ingest URL and matching key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Confirm FFmpeg’s output protocol matches that stream’s configuration.
MediaPackage has no incoming content The encoder was configured with the endpoint output URL instead of the channel’s ingest destination. Separate the AWS channel input from its downstream endpoint output. Send the encoder feed to the channel input.
HLS ingest is rejected or unstable The emitted playlist or HTTP behavior may not meet YouTube’s HLS constraints. Check for 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption other than HTTPS.
The stream appears connected, but preview or stream health is poor The feed may lack moving video or usable audio, or the playlist may not be producing compatible output. Test picture and sound with the selected stream before the event; inspect the media, playlist behavior, output protocol and YouTube stream-health feedback.
A scheduled stream has not begun publicly The encoder preview may be available, but the scheduled event still requires the creator to start it. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live when ready.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to keeping an FFmpeg machine running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo, then start the free day.
