It has 2 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: validate CPU, memory and uninterrupted streaming with your actual workload.
If the VM must capture, compose or software-encode video in real time, no single VM size is established as best. Benchmark the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings and overlays before relying on it around the clock.
Choose a VM for what it does to the video
The key distinction is whether the VM only forwards an encoded feed or performs video work itself. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations help configure the encoder and estimate network needs; they are not Compute Engine performance benchmarks.
Relaying a prepared stream
For a single pre-encoded stream that the VM forwards without re-encoding, begin with the e2-standard-2. Google describes E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose machine family; this size provides 2 vCPUs and 8 GB RAM. Run the actual stream continuously while monitoring resource use and stream health before treating it as suitable for your channel.

Encoding or producing video on the VM
Software encoding, capture, overlays and other production tasks add workload that a relay does not have. The required capacity depends on the codec, output resolution and frame rate, encoder preset, overlays and other processes. Test those exact settings in real time and retain CPU headroom; if the VM cannot keep pace, increase CPU capacity and test again. A VM’s vCPU count alone does not prove that it can sustain a particular encode.
YouTube describes encoder workflows for sources such as gameplay, cameras and microphones, and says it transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. That downstream transcoding does not remove the creator’s own capture, composition or encoding work.

Why a small shared-core VM is a less conservative starting point
Shared-core E2 sizes can appear attractive for a low-cost relay, but their sustained CPU capacity is fractional: e2-small sustains 0.5 vCPU and e2-medium sustains 1 vCPU, even though the guest sees two vCPUs. For a continuously active stream process, start with a standard machine unless measurements show a shared-core type can handle your real workload reliably.

These are YouTube encoder settings, not VM sizing requirements. Choose the intended output and codec first, then make sure the VM’s upload path can sustain the actual stream bitrate. YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and warns that a connection disruption can break a stream. That margin is for the available upload bandwidth, not a promise that a given VM or network will remain stable.
Select an Indian region and estimate the whole bill
Google lists E2 availability in both Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). Choose based on where your feed source and operators are, then observe latency and service availability in your own setup; regional availability alone does not establish which location will be faster or more reliable for a particular channel.

Use the Google Cloud pricing page and its Pricing Calculator to estimate the selected region and configuration. Include 24/7 VM runtime, boot disk, network use and any attached resources. A VM’s hourly rate is not the complete bill, and a single all-in INR figure would depend on those choices, current rates and billing date.
Validate the setup before depending on it
- Define the workload. Record whether the VM relays an already-encoded feed or captures, overlays, decodes or encodes video.
- Fix the output settings. Select the codec, resolution and frame rate, then set the encoder bitrate using YouTube’s guidance for that format.
- Choose a region and starting size. For a relay, begin with e2-standard-2 in Mumbai or Delhi. For real-time encoding, choose a test configuration rather than assuming a universal size.
- Run the complete pipeline. Test the actual continuous stream, including overlays and other processes that will run in production.
- Watch resource use and stream health. Look for CPU pressure, memory issues, missed real-time output or interruptions. If encoding cannot keep up, increase CPU capacity and repeat the test.
- Estimate the configured cost. Price the region, runtime, disk, network and other resources in Google Cloud’s current calculator before committing to continuous operation.

Protect the channel as well as the stream
A stream that stays online does not by itself establish that its content complies with YouTube policies or qualifies for monetization. Use content you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before building a continuous playlist. A 24/7 loop is a technical delivery choice, not an exemption from those rules.
