How to Use an AWS Elemental MediaLive Schedule to Switch Videos in a YouTube Live Stream

A MediaLive schedule switches the channel’s attached input—not YouTube video objects. Set up fixed, immediate, or follow actions and account for file and restart behavior.

An AWS Elemental MediaLive schedule switches the input feeding a running MediaLive channel. To change the video source in a YouTube-bound stream, attach each video source to the channel, then schedule an input-switch action for each transition. The schedule does not select YouTube video objects or manage a YouTube playlist, and AWS documentation about generic RTMP output does not establish what viewers will see during a switch.

What a MediaLive schedule switches

A MediaLive schedule belongs to a channel and holds actions that MediaLive passes to that running channel. An input-switch action changes which attached input the channel ingests. The videos therefore need to be available to the MediaLive channel as inputs; a schedule is not a YouTube playlist controller.

AWS states, “There is no implicit switching” in the MediaLive User Guide section on multiple-input channels and schedules. Attaching multiple inputs alone does not make the channel rotate among them: you must add explicit schedule actions.

Plan the source order and timing

Before creating actions, identify the channel inputs and decide which source should play first and what should trigger each later change. MediaLive provides three start modes: fixed, immediate, and follow.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mode Trigger Use it for Important behavior
Fixed A specified UTC wall-clock time A planned change at a known time The schedule passes the action to the channel roughly 15 seconds before its start. AWS documentation describes creation limits of at least 15 seconds and no more than 14 days ahead, while a console field description gives a 30-second minimum in its context. These lead times are not universal across interfaces; consult current guidance for the API or console method you use.
Immediate An action submitted for prompt execution An operator- or automation-triggered change For a standard two-pipeline channel, MediaLive internally schedules the switch 10 seconds ahead to align the pipelines.
Follow The end of a referenced input-switch action Starting a file input after another file input ends The referenced input must be a file, and its source end behavior must be Continue for the documented workflow.

AWS recommends controlling ingest through the schedule and making the first scheduled switch an immediate switch to the intended initial input. This helps make the initial source explicit rather than relying on implicit behavior.

Set up scheduled input switches

  1. Identify the channel and attach each source. Create or select the MediaLive channel and attach every input you intend to use. An input-switch action refers to the input attachment name, so the target input must already be attached.
  2. Choose the action order and start mode. Use fixed for a UTC clock time, immediate for a prompt action, or follow to start after a referenced file input ends. Check the timing constraints for the interface or API you are using rather than treating one lead-time figure as universal.
  3. Add an input-switch action to the channel schedule. Give the action a unique name, set its start mode, and configure its input-switch settings to reference the target input attachment. In the API schedule request, the start mode is represented by one of the fixed, immediate, or follow settings.
  4. Configure the output separately. Schedule actions select channel inputs; they do not configure YouTube ingest. For an RTMP destination, AWS identifies destination details such as protocol, address, port, application name, stream name or key, and credentials if required. Obtain the appropriate values from the downstream system operator and configure the output independently.
  5. Start the channel and verify the actual workflow. Check the channel output and transitions in your target setup. The MediaLive schedule and generic RTMP documentation do not establish YouTube-specific account setup or guarantee a seamless viewer experience during an upstream source change.

Use file clips and follow actions carefully

Clip boundaries and timecodes

A file input can be clipped using timecodes. Zero-based timecode counts from the beginning of the file. Embedded timecode uses the file’s source timecode and works only when the file contains it; AWS notes that clipping instructions are ignored if the embedded timecode is absent.

For a follow action, the next file begins after the referenced file input ends, provided the file input’s source end behavior is set to Continue. Follow actions reference a prior input-switch action, so plan the action chain around the input that actually ends.

Returning to a file input

If the channel switches away from a static file input and later switches back, MediaLive ingests that file or clip from its beginning. It does not resume at the point where it previously stopped.

Account for restarts in a timed schedule

A restart can change the playback position implied by a schedule. If the schedule indicates that a fixed or immediate file input should currently be active, MediaLive starts that file or clip from its beginning; it does not seek forward by the time elapsed since the scheduled start. A schedule designed around exact playback positions should account for that restart behavior.

Keep the YouTube boundary clear

MediaLive’s RTMP destination settings and its input-switch actions are separate parts of the workflow. AWS describes an RTMP output group generically as an output with one video encode and one audio encode. That description alone does not establish that a particular configuration is suitable for YouTube, give current YouTube setup steps, or predict what viewers see during an input transition.

Troubleshoot common schedule problems

  • The channel stays on its original source. Multiple attached inputs do not switch automatically. Confirm that the channel schedule contains an input-switch action for the intended input.
  • An action cannot target the expected source. Check that the input is attached to the channel and that the action references its input attachment name.
  • A fixed action is rejected or does not start when expected. Fixed starts use UTC, not source timecode. Check the requested start time and the current lead-time requirements for the API or console path you are using.
  • A follow action does not advance to the next file. Confirm that it references the intended prior input-switch action, that the referenced input is a file, and that its source end behavior is Continue.
  • A clip boundary is ignored. If the clip uses embedded timecode, confirm that the file contains embedded timecode. Otherwise, AWS says the clipping instructions are ignored; use a zero-based timecode where appropriate.
  • A file appears to restart after a switch or channel restart. Returning to a static file input starts at the beginning of the file or clip. After a restart, a currently active fixed or immediate file input also starts from its beginning rather than seeking forward to match elapsed schedule time.
  • The schedule changes input but YouTube playback is not as expected. A MediaLive input switch is not proof of a particular YouTube-side result. Check the RTMP destination configuration separately and verify the viewer-visible behavior in the actual workflow.
