It revisits the film’s portrayal of poverty and violence among young people in Mexico, considers its cinematic and social legacy, and returns to locations where Buñuel filmed. The producer lists a 102-minute runtime.
What is Memoria de los olvidados about?
Espada’s documentary looks back at Los olvidados, Buñuel’s Mexican-set drama about children and young people facing poverty and violence. Its focus is the making, meaning and afterlife of that one film. The Spanish Ministry of Culture describes Buñuel’s work as moving between reality and fiction, and frames it as an expression of concern for the dispossessed.
The Ministry’s synopsis says the film gives voice to people pushed to society’s margins; that is the institution’s interpretation, rather than a quotation from Buñuel. It also credits actor and filmmaker Arturo Ripstein with providing the documentary’s voice-over. Spanish Ministry of Culture
How the documentary approaches Buñuel’s film

The Goya connection
A second interpretive thread is Francisco de Goya’s importance to the conception of Buñuel’s film. Cineteca Nacional foregrounds this angle, and the Venice Biennale describes the Goya connection as a perspective offered by Espada’s documentary. That makes Goya a stated focus of this film, not proof that the relationship has never been explored before. La Biennale di Venezia
Why Los olvidados remains part of the conversation
Filmoteca UNAM reports that its archive preserves the original negative of Los olvidados and that the film entered UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme in 2003. Those details help explain why preservation and cultural memory sit naturally alongside Espada’s return to the film. The UNESCO designation applies to Buñuel’s 1950 film, not to Espada’s documentary. The Ministry of Culture presents Los olvidados as going beyond Italian neorealism in giving voice to the dispossessed. This is the Ministry’s critical framing, not a settled comparative verdict. Espada’s film examines the earlier work’s social concern and cinematic legacy through that lens, while also drawing attention to its locations and Goya connection.
