An FFmpeg packet-write error means FFmpeg failed to write output packets; it does not, by itself, identify why. Match the error’s timestamp to YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then compare the encoder preview and any local recording to the remote stream. Those checks help distinguish a source or encoder problem from an outbound connection or ingest issue without guessing at a cause.
What a packet-write error tells you—and what it doesn’t
FFmpeg writes encoded audio and video packets to an output destination. A packet-write error marks a failure at that output boundary. The message alone cannot establish whether the cause is the source, encoder, network path, ingest settings, endpoint, or remote service.
For example, FFmpeg-user mailing-list posts have reported “Broken pipe” and trailer-writing failures in different output contexts. Those are individual reports, not evidence that every packet-write error has the same cause or fix. See the 2017 RTMP report and the 2023 SIGPIPE discussion.
Also note when the failure occurs. An error during packet writing differs from one that appears only while FFmpeg writes the trailer after output has already stopped. That distinction is useful evidence, but neither wording alone identifies the root cause.

Start with the timestamped evidence
Save the complete FFmpeg log safely
- Keep the full stderr output, not just the final error line.
- Record the timestamp, exact write-error text, and any earlier connection, timeout, or handshake message.
- Note whether the error happened during packet writing or only at trailer writing.
- Record the FFmpeg version/build, output protocol, and whether YouTube reported an error at the same time.
- Remove or redact the stream key before sharing logs. Treat it as a credential.
Read YouTube Live Control Room at the same time
Check the timestamped stream-health message in Live Control Room and compare it with the FFmpeg log. YouTube’s live streaming error messages guide describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. The dashboard’s wording and timing provide evidence from the ingest side; the FFmpeg line alone does not.
YouTube’s live stream metrics can also help you align stream events with the moment the output stalled.

Use local and remote output to narrow the fault
Inspect the encoder preview and local archive
Check whether the encoder preview is smooth and whether a local recording, if you were making one, contains the same stall, missing audio, or visual corruption. YouTube notes that encoder errors, CPU load, or problems in routed audio and video sources can explain poor output. If the local preview or archive is also impaired, examine the source, encoder, system load, and routing before treating the network as the explanation.
If local output looks healthy, test the outbound path
A healthy encoder preview shifts attention toward the outbound connection, but does not prove that the network is responsible. YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection and contacting your ISP if tests reveal connectivity problems. If the device and network already support Ethernet, comparing a wired run with Wi-Fi can help isolate whether wireless behavior is involved; it is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Check the ingest settings against the actual stream
Compare what FFmpeg is sending with the configuration and recommended settings shown for your YouTube stream. Review the container and codecs, bitrate, audio and video stream settings, resolution, and keyframe cadence. A mismatch or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain can contribute to ingest trouble, but the packet-write error alone does not prove that settings are wrong.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose a bitrate the outbound connection can sustain, and compare it with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected resolution and codec.
Use the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for the applicable values rather than assuming one bitrate suits every format and resolution. YouTube’s error-message guide can help interpret any settings-related dashboard warning.

Check the RTMP or RTMPS endpoint only when the log points there
If the surrounding log or YouTube status mentions an SSL problem or connection timeout, verify that the destination URL matches the one currently shown in Live Control Room and that the encoder supports the selected protocol. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions discuss trying port 443 for an SSL error.
Do not change the URL, protocol, or port simply because a packet-write error appeared. Without relevant SSL, handshake, or timeout evidence, that error does not establish that the endpoint is wrong.

Make one change at a time
- Capture a baseline: save the log and note the dashboard status, preview, archive, and current output settings.
- Address local symptoms first: if the preview or archive is affected, inspect encoder errors, CPU load, and audio/video routing.
- Test connectivity: if local output is healthy, check outbound upload stability; compare wired and wireless behavior if possible.
- Reduce demand only if capacity is insufficient: lower the selected ingest bitrate or resolution if upload capacity cannot sustain the current settings.
- Test an encoder change when warranted: YouTube recommends using the latest encoder and trying another encoder where appropriate.
- Recheck the dashboard and log: compare the next attempt with the baseline so you can tell which change affected the result.
Changing one variable at a time makes the outcome interpretable. If several settings and network conditions change together, a successful retry will not show which change mattered.
