To send a live encoder feed from a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM to YouTube, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into your encoder, choose a supported codec and bitrate, and make sure the VM can sustain outbound traffic to YouTube. Prefer RTMPS, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the complete path privately or as an unlisted stream before going public.

Choose YouTube ingest settings for the encoder

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a 2-second keyframe interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current guidance for codec-specific settings and HDR before publishing: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are ingest settings—the characteristics of the feed your encoder sends. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for viewers, so the ingest resolution is not necessarily the resolution every viewer receives.

Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together

Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually intend to send. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates; they are operational recommendations, not study results. The cited settings page does not show a publication year. It also provides minimum rates and separate recommendations for H.265 and AV1, so do not apply these H.264 figures to those codecs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.264 ingest format YouTube minimum YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to specify them manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under stream resolution. Its settings page says 4K/2160p streams use normal latency; check the current page for details if your workflow has a latency or HDR requirement.

Allow upload headroom

YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For one feed, treat the selected encoder bitrate as the baseline and confirm that sustained outbound capacity stays above it with that margin. For multiple feeds, add their bitrates before calculating the required capacity. Upload capacity may be lower than download capacity, so a fast download test alone does not establish that the VM can maintain the stream. YouTube’s connection guidance is at YouTube Help.

Check the VM’s outbound network path and encoding capacity

The VM must be able to initiate an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A Compute Engine VM with an external IP can communicate with external systems. A VM without one needs another configured outbound path, such as Cloud NAT. Google Cloud’s default VPC firewall rules allow egress and block ingress, but custom VPC rules or organization-level firewall policies can change that. Check the effective policies for the VM; you do not need to open inbound ports just to send an outbound stream. See Google Cloud VPC firewall rules.

Do not size a VM by its advertised maximum egress alone. Google Cloud bandwidth limits depend on machine type and routing, and per-flow limits and project-level internet egress constraints may also apply. A maximum is a ceiling under applicable conditions, not a guarantee that a real encoder workload will sustain that rate. Review the current Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation for the chosen machine family and route.

The right machine type cannot be determined without the target resolution, codec, frame rate, encoding implementation, region, and redundancy requirements. Confirm both sides of the workload: the VM can encode the source in real time, and the network can sustain the target bitrate under expected load with headroom.

Configure and test the stream before the event

  1. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  2. Enter the ingest details in the encoder on the VM. Put the stream URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. Select RTMPS if supported, a codec YouTube supports, and a bitrate suitable for the selected resolution and frame rate. Apply CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, without exceeding 4 seconds.
  3. Verify outbound connectivity and policy. Confirm the VM has an external IP or another working egress route, then check the effective VPC and organization-level firewall rules. If connection attempts fail, verify the route and egress policy rather than opening inbound ports.
  4. Run a representative private or unlisted test. Use footage with motion and audio similar to the real stream. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and shows a preview, stream health is acceptable, and the VM maintains real-time encoding and outbound throughput.
  5. Monitor while broadcasting. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the event. If the stream key may have been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.

Troubleshoot common ingest problems

  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key, that it is using the intended protocol, and that the VM has a valid outbound route with permissive effective egress rules. A wrong or reset key must be replaced in the encoder.
  • Stream health reports connection or bandwidth trouble: Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with sustained outbound capacity, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check VM egress limits, route, per-flow constraints, and project internet egress quotas; a headline maximum is not guaranteed throughput.
  • The encoder cannot keep up with the source: Verify the selected VM can encode the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate in real time. The appropriate machine type depends on those workload details; test the intended configuration under representative load.
  • Keyframe or stream settings are rejected: Confirm the encoder is using CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, no greater than 4 seconds, and that codec, audio format, and frame rate match YouTube’s current settings guidance.
  • Manual resolution settings are unavailable or ignored: YouTube’s guidance says manual resolution settings require a custom stream key and manual settings enabled under stream resolution. Otherwise, YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate.
