Then check whether the encoder restarted, confirm its current YouTube stream URL and key, and use the timestamped Live Control Room status to identify the failure. A maintenance reboot does not by itself establish an India-wide network problem or explain why the stream stopped.
Recover the stream in the right order
Work from the VM outward. This separates a machine or encoder failure from a YouTube ingest problem and avoids changing stream settings before you know what failed. The cloud provider, operating system, encoder, and YouTube error are not specified here, so use the equivalent console, logs, and service controls for your setup rather than provider-specific commands.

Check the VM state and maintenance event
In your cloud provider’s console, confirm whether the VM is running, stopped, or still recovering. Review instance events and reboot logs at the time of the interruption. Record the event time and whether the restart was triggered by maintenance, a user or service account, or something inside the guest OS.
If the VM is unreachable or stopped, follow that provider’s documented recovery procedure before troubleshooting YouTube. On Google Compute Engine, the reboot troubleshooting guidance distinguishes system events from user or service-account actions and recommends inspecting logs and fields such as method and principal. A reboot initiated inside the guest OS might not have a comparable Cloud Audit Logs method. These are Google Cloud-specific examples, not evidence that this incident used Google Cloud: Google Compute Engine reboot troubleshooting.

Check that the encoder is running
If the VM is reachable, inspect the streaming application or process. It may have exited, become stuck, or simply failed to start when the operating system rebooted. Restart the encoder process or its configured service if needed, using the method appropriate to your software and operating system.
Then inspect the encoder’s output or logs for connection, authentication, ingest URL, and encoding errors. Do not assume a particular service name or restart command: those depend on the encoder and OS.

Reconnect with the current YouTube stream settings
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and the settings for the relevant stream. Check the server URL and stream key configured in the encoder, then start the encoder. Previous stream settings can load an earlier key. If YouTube rejects the key or it has been reset, copy the current key from the stream’s Stream tab and update the encoder. Treat a stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.

Use the timestamped health message to diagnose the feed
Wait for Live Control Room’s preview and health status to update, then read the error and its timestamp. YouTube displays timestamps beside detected errors. Follow the guidance for the error actually shown; do not infer a format problem without evidence. For example, YouTube’s “Incorrect stream format” guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Check outbound connectivity and ingest if the VM and encoder look healthy
Confirm the VM can reach the internet, that the encoder is using the intended YouTube ingest server, and that the stream key is current. Compare available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube’s general guidance recommends roughly 20% headroom above that bitrate; it does not establish an India-specific threshold or show that India is the cause of this outage. Check what viewers and the stream dashboard show
Check both the public watch page and Live Control Room. Viewer playback trouble alone does not prove the encoder stopped, and a successful encoder reconnect does not prove the live event or its archive continued without interruption. YouTube documents how to start an encoder feed, but does not promise that an arbitrary outage resumes the same event seamlessly.
What may have failed
Use the VM events, encoder output, and Live Control Room status together before naming a root cause. The same symptom—viewers seeing a stopped stream—can result from different points in the chain.

- The VM restarted, but the encoder did not start automatically with the operating system.
- The encoder restarted with a stale or incorrect stream URL or key, or reports an encoding error.
- The VM and encoder are operating, but outbound connectivity or YouTube ingestion is failing.
- Viewers have playback trouble while the encoder feed remains active.
If this VM uses Google Compute Engine
Google Cloud’s maintenance behavior is not universal to other providers. For most supported Compute Engine instances, Google says host maintenance uses live migration, intended to keep the instance running with minimal disruption. Google describes minimum disruption during live migration as typically much less than one second; that describes supported live migration, not every reboot or this particular stream interruption. Some VM configurations do not support live migration or are configured to stop, and may stop and optionally restart. Check the instance’s host maintenance and restart behavior in the Google Cloud documentation: Set the host maintenance policy.

For a specific Google Cloud reboot, use the event and log guidance in Compute Engine reboot troubleshooting. Its documented compute.instances.automaticRestart event can follow a host error or terminateOnHostMaintenance event when automatic restart is enabled. Consider other causes, including guest-initiated events, rather than treating that event as a universal explanation. Google says Persistent Disk and Hyperdisk data persist through instance restarts according to its host-event guidance.
Reduce the chance of another interruption
Make startup behavior deliberate
Check the cloud VM’s supported maintenance and automatic-restart settings against the documentation for your actual provider and machine type. Configure the encoder to start after OS boot with an appropriate service or process manager. Test this with a planned restart and confirm that the encoder reconnects to the intended YouTube stream.
Test a backup encoder before relying on it
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup. Run the test in advance and check the viewer experience; do not assume a backup will work just because it is configured. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a continuous 24/7 record
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 stream exceeds that guidance, so keep a local recording if preserving the full program matters. YouTube recommends a local archive backup: YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
