Run FFmpeg as a foreground process under a systemd service and configure systemd to restart it after an exit. A delay such as RestartSec=5 can prevent immediate retries, but the values are examples to validate against your Ubuntu host—not a guarantee that YouTube will resume a healthy broadcast. After a restart, check both the service logs and YouTube Live Control Room.
What automatic restart does—and does not—cover
systemd can supervise FFmpeg and relaunch it when the process exits, according to the unit’s restart policy. An FFmpeg-user mailing-list example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; it is one reported configuration, not a universal prescription. Check the service documentation installed on your Ubuntu host before choosing a policy. FFmpeg-user mailing-list example
This handles a process that has exited. It does not establish that FFmpeg is producing healthy video, that the connection to YouTube is working, or that viewers can see the broadcast. A process can remain alive while output stalls, and a successful relaunch alone does not confirm that the stream is live.
Configure FFmpeg as a systemd service
1. Put the existing FFmpeg command in a unit
Create a systemd service unit for your existing FFmpeg command. Run FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process so systemd can track it; do not background it from the command. Preserve the input, output and encoding options you already use. The sources available for this guide do not establish a single command or unit file that is correct for every stream.

Protect the YouTube stream key. Keep it out of public repositories and avoid exposing it in logs. Use restrictive file permissions or a credentials mechanism supported by your installed systemd version.
2. Choose a restart policy and delay
Add a restart policy and a delay to the service. Restart=always with RestartSec=5 is an example reported by an FFmpeg-user mailing-list participant, not a required setting. Consider whether normal FFmpeg exits should also trigger another run, and consult the service documentation on your host for the exact behavior of each policy.

systemd also applies start-rate limiting. If repeated attempts stop, inspect the service logs and the installed documentation for the applicable limits and recovery procedure. A delay can space out retries, but it does not make an invalid command or unreachable endpoint recover.
3. Reload, enable and start the service
After saving the unit, use systemctl to reload unit definitions, enable the service if it should start with the system, and start it. Then inspect its state with systemctl and its output with journalctl. Exact commands and unit names depend on how you named and installed the service; verify them on your host rather than assuming a sample command will fit unchanged.

4. Verify the broadcast after a restart
Confirm that FFmpeg restarted by checking the service state and journal, then confirm that the broadcast is actually receiving video in YouTube Live Control Room. If YouTube reports an encoder startup problem, its troubleshooting guidance advises checking the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. These layers address different failure modes: process exit, temporary output trouble, and apparent lack of progress. Choose a signal that reflects the failure you need to catch, decide how repeated attempts should be limited, and verify viewer-visible health separately. The available sources establish no comparative uptime or guaranteed recovery time.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
- The service starts and exits repeatedly: inspect the journal for FFmpeg errors, check the command and its input/output settings, and verify that the stream key is current. If the repeated attempts hit systemd’s start-rate limit, consult the documentation and logs for the installed version.
- The service is active, but the stream is missing: an active process is not proof of a healthy broadcast. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room; use YouTube’s stream-key guidance for encoder startup trouble and investigate the internet connection when applicable.
- FFmpeg stays up but output stops: restart-on-exit may not trigger because the process has not exited. Consider FIFO recovery for temporary output failures or a separate progress watchdog, with a reliable signal and cautious restart thresholds.
- Retries stop after several failures: check for systemd start-rate limiting in the logs and the service documentation shipped with your host. Do not assume the same limits or reset procedure apply across installed versions.
