If your YouTube live stream keeps disconnecting through a Windows PC and an Indian phone hotspot, first check YouTube’s timestamped stream-health messages, then separate encoder problems from upload instability. Measure upload speed at the broadcast location and time, reduce your stream’s bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it with headroom, and rehearse unlisted before going public. A fast download result alone does not show that a mobile connection can reliably sustain a live upload.
Find out what is disconnecting
Start with the failure, not a Windows setting or a new accessory. YouTube’s Live Control Room checks the stream arriving at YouTube and displays timestamped health messages. Note the time of each interruption and compare it with those messages: YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. The messages can help distinguish an encoder that stopped sending from an ingestion problem; if the stream remains healthy there but a viewer cannot watch, investigate playback separately. - Record when the stream drops and what the Live Control Room reported at that time.
- Check whether your encoder still shows a healthy local preview and is sending output.
- If available, review a local recording to see whether the picture or sound was already failing before upload.
Separate encoder trouble from hotspot upload trouble
A broken stream received by YouTube does not by itself prove the hotspot is at fault. Use the local output and YouTube’s incoming-stream status together. A healthy local preview and recording alongside a broken incoming stream points toward the outbound connection; poor local output, high CPU load, or encoder errors point instead toward the source, encoder, or PC workload. This is a diagnostic interpretation of YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee.
Update your encoder, inspect CPU load, and check its local preview and output. YouTube advises checking connection strength and contacting the internet provider if that test shows a connection problem. In this setup, the mobile operator is the relevant provider for the cellular connection between the phone and the network; that does not establish that a particular Indian carrier is at fault. Measure upload where and when you stream
Test upload speed at the place the PC will stream from, preferably at the same time of day as the broadcast. Repeat the test: a single result does not establish that a cellular connection can sustain the stream throughout the event. Compare stable upload capacity with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, not with download speed.
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% of outbound bandwidth unused beyond the total bitrate of the stream; account for a backup stream too if you use one. For example, a stream configured at 6 Mbps needs roughly 7.2 Mbps of stable upload capacity to preserve that headroom. If your upload varies or falls short, lower the stream’s bitrate and/or resolution. YouTube’s connection advice is in its live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.

Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations below are platform guidance, not a guarantee of stable streaming over a variable mobile connection. The listed minimums do not promise that a hotspot can sustain the setting.

Use a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if measured upload cannot carry the selected stream plus the recommended headroom. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Check the current YouTube bitrate and encoder settings when setting your encoder.

Rehearse before relying on the connection
Make changes in an unlisted test stream before a public event. Use realistic motion and audio: a static screen may not reflect the demands of the actual program. Start early, verify the preview, monitor Live Control Room health messages, and, if you use backup encoding, verify that failover works. YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend allowing time to check the stream.
- Set the encoder to a bitrate your measured upload can sustain with about 20% headroom.
- Start an unlisted stream and confirm that the local preview and YouTube preview both look and sound right.
- Watch the stream-health messages through a representative rehearsal and note any errors or interruptions.
- If it drops, compare the timestamp with encoder output, CPU load, and measured connection stability; reduce demand and test again.
Try a separate wired connection if you have one
YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for computer live streaming. If separate fixed broadband is available, connect the PC to its router with Ethernet and repeat the same unlisted test. If that performs better, it implicates the hotspot/cellular route but does not identify the precise cause. An Ethernet cable cannot fix the phone’s cellular connection when the hotspot is the PC’s only route to the internet. YouTube’s advice is documented in its network guidance.

What not to assume
The available evidence does not establish a universal Windows adapter setting, an Indian carrier fault, or a signal accessory that will fix repeated drops. Avoid treating a download speed result as proof of upload capacity, or assuming that an Ethernet cable helps when it still depends on the same phone hotspot. Test one change at a time and use the timestamped stream health and rehearsal results to judge whether it helped.
