A high-bitrate source file is not automatically the reason a YouTube 24/7 stream buffers. Separate the pipeline into file reading and decoding, filters and encoding, muxing and network output, YouTube ingest, and viewer playback. Find the stage where the delay or buffering begins before changing settings: an FFmpeg process that cannot keep pace needs a different fix from a YouTube ingest warning or a problem affecting only viewers.
First locate where the buffering starts
Note the time of each incident and compare what FFmpeg reports with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and the reports from viewers. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A viewer saying “it buffers” does not identify which part of the pipeline is at fault.
- FFmpeg stalls, falls behind, or reports input, decoding, or encoding errors: investigate file access and processing capacity.
- YouTube Live Control Room reports an ingest or stream-health error: check the outgoing feed, network upload, and the specific error message.
- Ingest health is good, but some viewers buffer: investigate playback conditions and the stream’s latency mode; do not assume the source file or FFmpeg read rate is responsible.
Keep timestamps, FFmpeg progress output, and the exact YouTube health message together. Without the command, logs, formats, host utilization, upload measurements, and viewer conditions, there is no basis to identify one confirmed root cause.
Check how FFmpeg reads the file
A file can be read faster than its intended playback rate unless input pacing is applied. FFmpeg’s -readrate option controls how quickly media is ingested: its default value of 0 imposes no speed limit, while -readrate 1 represents real-time speed and is equivalent to -re. FFmpeg describes these options as useful for simulating a capture device when reading from a file.

For a prerecorded file being sent as a live stream, check whether the input is paced at the intended media rate. Do not add a low read rate indiscriminately to a genuine live or capture input: FFmpeg cautions that doing so can cause packet loss. Option behavior can differ by release; consult the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on the streaming host. The online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly and describes the newest revision.
Verify that processing keeps up with the media clock
Even with correctly paced input, decoding, filters, or encoding may not sustain the chosen frame rate. Use FFmpeg’s progress output to observe whether processing keeps pace during a representative run, and inspect CPU or other relevant host utilization when investigating a slowdown.
-benchmarkreports CPU time and memory use at the end of a run.-benchmark_allreports timings during encoding and decoding stages.
These measurements can help identify processing pressure, but an end-of-run result or short sample does not establish that a system will remain stable for a 24/7 stream. Monitor a representative operating period, including the filters and encoding settings used in production.

Match outgoing settings to YouTube Live guidance
The source file’s bitrate and the outgoing stream’s encoded bitrate are separate. A high source bitrate may affect storage reads or decoding workload; it does not by itself establish that the upload stream exceeds network capacity. Compare the actual outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s live encoder guidance for that combination. The figures below are YouTube’s published ranges, not measurements of your connection or a guarantee that a particular host can sustain them.
| Outgoing configuration | YouTube-published bitrate range | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps | YouTube live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; use the matching row for your actual settings. |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps | YouTube live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; use the matching row for your actual settings. |
Those examples are not universal targets. YouTube’s live recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not substitute upload-file recommendations for live ingest settings; use the live encoder page and recheck it before changing a production stream because platform guidance can change.
Use CBR and check keyframe cadence
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with no interval over 4 seconds. Its error guidance says keyframes that arrive too infrequently can cause buffering and recommends a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. If YouTube reports a keyframe problem, verify the actual output cadence after any encoder or frame-rate change rather than relying only on the intended setting.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
FFmpeg command-line options depend on the chosen encoder, input, and build; without those details, a single command would risk giving you the wrong syntax or settings. Confirm the encoder’s CBR and GOP controls against the FFmpeg documentation for your installed build, then verify the resulting stream in YouTube’s health messages.
Measure the upload connection under real conditions
YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Compare sustainable upload performance during representative operating conditions with the complete outgoing stream bitrate, and lower the outgoing bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of continuous performance during a 24/7 event, and the cited guidance does not establish a universal upload-headroom percentage.

Use YouTube’s error message to choose the next fix
When YouTube reports an ingest problem, follow the message rather than changing unrelated input settings. For a keyframe warning, YouTube says to set keyframes every 2 seconds and no more than every 4 seconds, and to use a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. After adjusting settings, watch the actual stream-health messages to confirm whether the warning clears.
If the ingest indicator is healthy while viewers still report buffering, distinguish playback from ingest. YouTube warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Check the selected latency mode against the need for interaction, and investigate viewer-side playback conditions separately from FFmpeg’s source-file read behavior.

| Symptom | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reads a file at the wrong pace or the output does not follow the intended media clock. | Whether file input is paced with -readrate 1 or -re, as appropriate for the installed FFmpeg version. |
Use real-time pacing for the file-based live simulation; do not apply a low read rate to an actual live input. |
| FFmpeg falls behind while reading, decoding, filtering, or encoding. | Progress output and representative processing-stage timings. | Identify which stage cannot sustain the target rate before changing hardware or buying equipment. |
| YouTube reports buffering or a keyframe error. | Outgoing bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; keyframe interval and GOP behavior. | Compare against YouTube’s live guidance and correct keyframe cadence if flagged. |
| YouTube reports a weak or unstable feed. | Sustainable upload performance during representative conditions versus total outgoing bitrate. | Reduce outgoing bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the stream. |
| Ingest is healthy, but viewers report buffering. | Latency mode and viewer playback conditions. | Investigate playback separately; lower latency can increase playback buffering. |
Cost and equipment: measure before replacing anything
The available evidence does not establish that a particular SSD, workstation, GPU, router, or standalone encoder fixes this symptom. A high-bitrate file can contribute to storage-read or decode load, but that is a hypothesis to test against observed performance, not a reason by itself to buy equipment. Measure the stage that is actually falling behind first.
