OBS vs. FFmpeg Reconnect Behavior for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

OBS documents bounded output retries with an increasing wait. FFmpeg’s generic reconnect flags apply to HTTP documentation, not proven native RTMP recovery. Neither guarantees YouTube will resume the same broadcast.

Short answer: OBS documents a bounded reconnect policy for supported outputs: set a maximum retry count and an initial wait, which doubles after each retry. FFmpeg’s documented generic reconnect controls are in its HTTP protocol section; they are not evidence of equivalent retry behavior for a native RTMP output. Neither encoder’s reconnect behavior guarantees that YouTube will resume the same live broadcast after every interruption.

For a 24/7 stream, treat reconnect settings as one layer of recovery—not a substitute for a stable network, YouTube Live Control Room monitoring, and a test of the exact event and encoder build you plan to use.

What OBS and FFmpeg actually document

Behavior OBS Studio FFmpeg
Where reconnect controls apply OBS’s output API exposes reconnect settings for supported outputs. Generic reconnect controls are documented for the HTTP protocol. Native RTMP options are listed separately.
Retry limit retry_count sets a maximum; zero disables reconnecting. HTTP includes reconnect_max_retries, whose default is unset. This does not establish retry behavior for native RTMP output.
Wait between retries A starting wait is set; the wait doubles on each retry. HTTP options include maximum and total delay controls. The documentation does not make these native RTMP output controls.
Guaranteed YouTube event recovery Not established for every interruption. Not established for every interruption.

FFmpeg options can vary by release and build. Check the documentation for the version you run and distinguish an HTTP input or output from a native RTMP publishing workflow before relying on any retry flag. The official FFmpeg protocol documentation lists HTTP and RTMP options in separate sections.

How OBS reconnects

OBS’s documented output reconnect mechanism is explicit but finite: configure the maximum retries and the initial wait. The wait doubles on each retry, and a retry count of zero turns reconnecting off. The OBS output API documents those settings; it does not promise indefinite attempts or uninterrupted viewer playback.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS’s reconnect setting addresses an output that has disconnected. It does not repair the cause. OBS identifies unstable network connectivity and a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible contributors to disconnections and dropped frames. Its connection troubleshooting guidance recommends wired networking where Wi-Fi may be unstable.

What FFmpeg’s reconnect flags mean for a YouTube RTMP stream

FFmpeg’s familiar options—including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_max_retries—are documented under HTTP protocol options. They should not be presented as proven switches for reconnecting a native RTMP publishing output.

The native RTMP section documents connection parameters such as server, application, playpath, timeout or listen behavior, and TCP keepalive. It does not list an equivalent retry-count and backoff setting. That distinction matters because YouTube’s encoder workflow uses RTMP or RTMPS: a flag with “reconnect” in its name is not enough to show that it controls the publishing connection in your particular command and FFmpeg build. See the separate HTTP and RTMP sections of FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Why encoder reconnection is not the same as YouTube recovery

An encoder can reconnect to an ingest endpoint without guaranteeing that the same YouTube live event resumes as intended. The official material does not promise one universal broadcast-state outcome for every interruption. For a 24/7 channel, verify both sides: encoder logs and the event’s status in YouTube Live Control Room.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Follow that guidance for the actual stream configuration, rather than assuming a successful local reconnect means the event remained continuous. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Separately, OBS’s current troubleshooting guidance, accessed in 2026, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point when troubleshooting bitrate. These figures describe different guidance: choose a YouTube-compatible encoder bitrate that your connection can sustain consistently, with room for network variation. YouTube also advises testing the stream and choosing quality based on connection reliability.

Test the failure path before depending on either setup

  1. Use the intended production setup. Test the same OBS or FFmpeg version/build, output protocol, YouTube event configuration, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to run.
  2. Confirm normal operation first. Check the encoder’s output or logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health before introducing an interruption.
  3. Interrupt the network deliberately. During a controlled test, briefly disconnect the network, then restore it. Observe whether the encoder retries, what its logs report, and how the YouTube event status changes.
  4. Verify the viewer-facing result. Confirm whether the intended event resumes and whether playback was interrupted. A reconnect message alone is not proof that the broadcast continued as needed.
  5. Repeat for relevant failures. A brief network interruption does not cover every possible failure, such as an encoder process exit or a longer outage. Test the scenarios important to your operation and decide how you will notice a failure that does not recover.

This is a recommended test plan, not a claim that either encoder has been tested here. Document the behavior of your own setup before trusting it with a continuous channel.

Troubleshoot a 24/7 stream that keeps stopping

  • OBS stops retrying: Check whether its configured retry limit has been reached and whether reconnecting is disabled by a retry count of zero. The documented policy is bounded, not an indefinite retry guarantee.
  • Repeated disconnects or dropped frames: Check connection stability and whether the chosen bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. OBS recommends a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable; an Ethernet cable can address one potential network issue, but it does not add reconnect logic or guarantee uptime.
  • FFmpeg HTTP flags seem ineffective: Confirm which protocol the publishing output uses. HTTP reconnect options are documented for HTTP; do not assume they govern native RTMP publishing.
  • The encoder reconnects but YouTube does not behave as expected: Inspect YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder logs together. Test the event behavior before relying on the stream, because local reconnection alone does not establish that the same broadcast resumed.
  • The failure is not reproducible: Record the encoder version/build, protocol, bitrate, interruption type, logs, and YouTube stream-health messages. FFmpeg options may differ by build, and a generic “conversion failed” message by itself does not identify a universal reconnect fix.
