Most FFmpeg concat errors come from one of four separate problems: a malformed playlist, files the concat demuxer cannot join, incorrect durations or timestamps, or YouTube ingest settings. For compatible lesson files, use a valid concat playlist and put -stream_loop -1 before its input. If the files differ in streams, codecs, or time bases, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode; looping alone will not fix incompatibility.
Choose the right concat method first
FFmpeg has three commonly confused ways to combine inputs. Pick based on what the files contain, not just their extensions.
| Method | What it joins | Use it when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Packets from a list of files | Lesson files have the same streams, codecs, and time bases; stream copy may then avoid re-encoding. | Matching only the video codec or file extension is not enough. FFmpeg requires compatible streams and time bases. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation |
| Concat filter | Decoded audio and video streams | Inputs need to be joined after decoding, such as when they need normalization and re-encoding. | Requires explicit stream handling and encoding; it is not packet-copy concatenation. FFmpeg concat filter documentation |
| Concat protocol | Resources at the file or container level | The resources and container formats are compatible with this approach. | It is limited to compatible formats and is not a general substitute for the demuxer or filter. FFmpeg concat protocol documentation |
For a static list of recorded lessons that share the required layout, start with the concat demuxer. FFmpeg’s documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”
Check that FFmpeg can read the playlist
A concat playlist is a text script, not a video. A minimal manifest looks like this:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'lesson-01.mp4'
file 'lesson-02.mp4'
The automatic-detection header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Save it as, for example, lessons.ffconcat. To select the demuxer explicitly, use:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i lessons.ffconcat ...
-safe 0 relaxes FFmpeg’s path safety checks and is often needed for absolute paths or paths outside the safe subset. Use it only with a playlist you trust. It does not repair misspelled paths or malformed lines. See FFmpeg’s concat script syntax and demuxer options.
If FFmpeg reports an unknown directive or cannot open a file
- Check that the header is the exact first line and the manifest has no byte-order mark or extra text before it.
- Verify each
filedirective, spelling, quoting, and path. Paths containing spaces or special characters must be escaped or quoted correctly. - Check whether relative paths resolve from the process’s current working directory, and confirm the FFmpeg process can read the manifest and media files.
- If relying on automatic detection, use the
.ffconcatsuffix and keep the exact header. Otherwise specify-f concatbefore the playlist input.
Confirm the lesson files are compatible
Use ffprobe to inspect every lesson, not just the first. Compare stream count and order, codecs, time bases, frame rates, dimensions, pixel formats, audio layouts, start times, and durations. The demuxer expects the same streams, codecs, and time bases; a shared extension or video codec does not establish that compatibility.

Repeat for the other files and compare the output. If stream layouts or parameters differ, make normalized intermediate files with matching properties, or build a concat-filter graph with explicit stream mapping and re-encode. The filter is the more suitable route when decoded inputs must be joined despite differences. Consult the concat filter documentation for its input requirements and filter syntax.

A playlist can parse correctly while the media still fails at a join. With -c copy, FFmpeg does not re-encode packets, so incompatible parameters or timestamp behavior can surface at the boundary. Check muxer warnings, stream start times, and audio and video durations. Try a normalized, re-encoded sequence and a finite test before leaving a continuous output unattended.
Handle duration and timestamp problems separately
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to calculate timestamps for later files. Incorrect or missing duration metadata, or a truncated file, can therefore create timestamp gaps, overlaps, or playback artifacts even when the playlist parses and the streams appear compatible. The concat script supports a per-file duration directive to override an incorrect or unavailable duration. Use a value that reflects the actual media duration; do not treat it as a general timestamp repair. Details are in the concat demuxer documentation.

If playback freezes or breaks at the point where the playlist restarts, check duration and timestamp behavior before changing YouTube settings. Re-encoding and testing a finite run can help distinguish a boundary problem from an ingest problem. No method guarantees a seamless transition: hard cuts and gaps in the lesson audio remain characteristics of the source content.
Loop the complete playlist as one input
For a compatible playlist, this command shape loops the list indefinitely and sends an encoded FLV output to an RTMP-style destination:

-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac
-f flv "$INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
- Replace
lessons.ffconcatwith the manifest path and confirm its entries resolve correctly. - Set the destination to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; do not expose it in public examples or logs.
- Adjust mapping, encoder, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and output format for the actual media and YouTube settings. The sample is a starting shape, not a guaranteed command for every input or account.
- Run a finite test and check both the FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health before relying on a continuous stream.
-stream_loop -1 means loop the input indefinitely, so it belongs before the playlist’s -i. -re is commonly paired with file inputs to pace a streaming workflow in real time. It does not fix incompatible streams, malformed playlists, or bad timestamps. See FFmpeg’s advanced options.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you instead try -c copy, do so only when the packet streams and output muxer are compatible and timestamps behave correctly. If the output errors, freezes, or glitches at loop boundaries, test a normalized or re-encoded version. Do not assume packet copying will work merely because each file plays on its own.
Check YouTube ingest after FFmpeg output works
A successful local concat is only one stage. YouTube’s live encoder guidance currently lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60; these are YouTube recommendations for those resolution and frame-rate combinations, not universal values for every stream. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings for the target output.
- Confirm the ingest URL and selected stream key in Live Control Room; YouTube supports custom stream keys for reuse. Keep the key secret. YouTube stream key help
- Use CBR and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s current guidance, with bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Test with representative picture motion and audio from the lessons, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event.
- Verify that the output codec and container match the selected ingest workflow. A valid playlist does not guarantee that YouTube can ingest the resulting output.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown directive, invalid playlist, or a listed file will not open | Manifest parsing or paths | Exact header, line endings, quoting and escaping, current working directory, permissions, and whether the trusted playlist needs -safe 0. |
| Stream parameters do not match or the join fails | Input compatibility | Compare every input’s streams, codecs, time bases, and layouts with ffprobe; normalize or use the concat filter and re-encode if needed. |
| Gaps, overlaps, or glitches occur at a join | Duration or timestamps | Check file duration metadata, truncation, stream start times, audio/video lengths, and muxer warnings; test a corrected duration or normalized encode. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube reports a bad or unstable stream | Output and ingest configuration | Check protocol, codec, CBR, bitrate, keyframe interval, stream URL and key, then monitor stream health. |
| The playlist plays once but does not repeat | Loop option placement | Put -stream_loop -1 before the playlist input’s -i; it is an input option. |
The exact error message, FFmpeg version, operating system, command, and media properties determine which branch applies. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated and may not match an older installed build; check the documentation for your version and capture the complete command output when diagnosing a failure.
