To copy a video file from your computer to a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM, use Google Cloud CLI’s gcloud compute scp command. It transfers a local file over SSH; it does not download a video from YouTube or publish one there.
Copy a local video to your Compute Engine VM
Google’s documented command form is gcloud compute scp LOCAL_FILE_PATH VM_NAME:REMOTE_DIR. Include the VM’s zone if it is not already available in your CLI configuration. For example:
gcloud compute scp "/local/path/my video.mp4" VM_NAME:/home/USERNAME/ --zone=ZONE
Replace the local path, VM name, remote directory, username in the path, and zone with your values. Quotes protect a local filename or path containing spaces. The destination directory must be writable by the SSH user. See Google’s file-transfer guide and the gcloud compute scp reference.
Prepare the workstation and VM
- Install and configure Google Cloud CLI on the workstation that has the file. Select the project containing the VM, or be ready to identify it in your command configuration.
- Identify the VM name and zone. Use the zone where that instance runs; pass it with
--zone=ZONEwhen needed. - Check SSH reachability. The VM must accept SSH connections. Google’s transfer guide calls out firewall access to TCP port 22. Follow your project’s access policy when checking or changing firewall rules.
- Run the copy command. For a directory tree rather than one file, add
--recursebefore or after the positional arguments. - Verify the destination. Connect with
gcloud compute sshand check that the file exists in the remote directory before using it. Google documents the connection command in its Compute Engine SSH guide.
The CLI reference also lists connection options such as --tunnel-through-iap and --internal-ip. Use those only if the project’s network and IAM configuration support that route; their presence in the command does not configure access by itself.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | Useful when | Requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
gcloud compute scp |
You want the standard command-line transfer from a workstation to a Compute Engine VM. | Google Cloud CLI on the source device and SSH access to the VM. Supports directory copying with --recurse. |
Direct OpenSSH scp |
You use Linux or macOS and want to connect directly to the VM’s address. | You manage SSH keys manually, configure an authorized public key, and need an accessible address and SSH-allowing firewall rule. Google’s example uses scp -i KEY LOCAL_FILE USERNAME@IPv4_ADDRESS:~. |
| SSH-in-browser upload | You prefer a browser-based transfer for a file that is not too large. | The upload control places the file in the SSH user’s /home/ directory. Google cautions that browser uploads can be slow for large files and recommends gcloud compute scp when transfer speed is poor. |
| Cloud Storage staging | You do not want to transfer directly from the workstation to the VM. | Upload the file to a bucket, then download it from the bucket on the VM. Google’s guide lists Storage Object Admin for uploaders and Storage Object Viewer for downloaders; remove staged files you no longer need to avoid unwanted storage charges. |
| WinSCP | You use a Windows workstation to transfer files to a Linux VM with a graphical interface. | Google lists WinSCP as an option and notes its SSH keys are compatible with PuTTY. |
For direct OpenSSH, Google’s documented example uses the VM’s external IPv4 address. For an external IPv6 address, Google gives a bracketed address form with -6. If the VM has no suitable external network path, do not assume workstation-to-IP copying will work; check the supported gcloud connection path and the project’s private-networking or IAP setup. See Google’s transfer guide and command reference.
Understand what “YouTube stream file” means
SCP copies a file already on your workstation to the VM. It does not retrieve a video from YouTube and it does not upload or publish a video on YouTube. If the file is intended for a livestream, first obtain a legitimate source file; the Google documentation describes ordinary file transfer, not a special YouTube stream-file format or a YouTube-to-VM SCP procedure.

If the video is your own existing YouTube upload
YouTube Help says creators can download their uploaded videos through YouTube Studio as MP4 files at 720p or 360p, depending on video size, or export content with Google Takeout. YouTube’s creator-download route does not let you download other users’ uploaded videos. The help page also lists possible download restrictions, including video removal, strikes, pre-approved audio, and a limit of five downloads of a video within 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current download your YouTube videos instructions because product details can change.
If you plan to reuse someone else’s video or audio
Get the necessary rights or permission before using third-party work. YouTube says it cannot grant rights to another creator’s upload; unauthorized material may result in a Content ID claim or removal following a copyright request. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.

If your goal is to publish a video on YouTube
That is a separate workflow from copying it to a VM. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Upload videos, select the local file, and configure its details and visibility. YouTube distinguishes uploading (importing the file) from publishing it for viewers. Follow the current YouTube upload instructions.
Troubleshoot transfer failures
- SSH connection or permission error: Confirm the selected project, exact instance name, zone, VM state, SSH setup, and firewall path. Check whether TCP port 22 is allowed for the intended connection. The precise cause depends on your project configuration.
- “File not found” locally: Confirm the workstation path and spelling. Quote paths with spaces, and run the command from an account that can read the file.
- Copy reaches the VM but cannot write the destination: Choose a directory writable by the SSH user, such as that user’s home directory, rather than assuming a privileged system directory is writable.
- Directory contents are missing: Use
--recursewhen copying a directory tree, then inspect the destination path on the VM. - Browser upload is unusually slow: For a large file, use
gcloud compute scpif the workstation has the CLI and SSH access is configured. - Direct
scpcannot reach the VM: Verify the external address, firewall rule, and manually configured SSH key. If the instance is reachable only through internal networking or IAP, use the relevant supported connection configuration rather than assuming a public-IP route.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the real goal is to keep a prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel 24/7, copying the file to a VM is only one part of a do-it-yourself setup: you still need to configure and maintain the streaming process on that machine. StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube:
