Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeither Google Compute Engine nor AWS EC2 is universally cheaper or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right choice depends on what the VM must do, where it runs, how much data it sends, and how it recovers from failures. Price the same workload in both providers’ calculators, then test the candidate VM with your actual stream settings.
Start with the kind of stream you need to run
A cloud VM can run an encoder that converts live camera or other input, loop a prerecorded file, or relay an already encoded feed to YouTube. These workloads are not interchangeable: live encoding can require substantially more CPU or GPU capacity than relaying or playing a prepared file. Decide the source workflow, codec, resolution, frame rate, and recovery target before choosing an instance.
For a stream that sends one feed to YouTube, the main comparison is between VM compute, disks and related resources, outbound transfer, network behavior, and recovery design. A service that also delivers video to viewers or transcodes multiple outputs is a different architecture with different costs.
Compare the costs using the same assumptions
There is no meaningful single “24/7 price” for either provider without an instance type, region, operating system, disk configuration, and stream profile. Estimate monthly runtime and outbound data, then enter identical assumptions into each provider’s pricing tools. Charges, allowances, and rates can vary with region and configuration; confirm the live calculator results before committing.

| Cost or resource | Google Compute Engine | Amazon EC2 |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Depends on the chosen machine, region, operating system, and running hours. Use the Google Cloud calculator rather than treating the advertised e2-micro starting price as an encoder recommendation. Google Compute Engine | On-demand instances are billed from launch until stopped or terminated. Linux and several other listed systems bill by the second for partial instance-hours, subject to a 60-second minimum. Exact cost depends on instance, region, OS, and hours. EC2 On-Demand Instance Pricing |
| Outbound data | The product overview states that standard network tier includes up to 200 GB per month of outbound transfer; premium-tier outbound transfer starts at $0.08 per GB. Applicability and final rates depend on configuration and region. Google Compute Engine | AWS states that 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out is free across AWS services and regions, except China and GovCloud; aggregate usage across listed services affects rate tiers. Check the current pricing page for scope and charges. EC2 On-Demand Instance Pricing |
| Disk and related resources | Include boot and data disks and any relevant network resources in the calculator. Their cost is separate from the basic question of VM runtime. | Include storage and any relevant network resources in the estimate; the instance price alone is not the complete bill. |
| Network ceiling | Per-instance egress limits vary by machine series and destination. The documented general limit is around 2 Gbps per vCPU with exceptions, but that is a ceiling, not sustained-throughput assurance. Compute Engine network bandwidth | The cited pricing material does not establish a comparable, universal EC2 throughput figure for this workload. Check the selected instance’s current networking specifications and test the route to YouTube. |
Estimate the continuous stream’s data volume
Multiply the target video bitrate by the number of seconds streamed, then convert bits to bytes to estimate payload transfer. For example, using YouTube’s H.264 recommendation of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, a 30-day uninterrupted stream would send about 3.24 TB of video payload before protocol overhead and restarts. This is an estimate based on the stated bitrate and 30 days; actual transfer varies with the encoder and stream behavior. Use the resulting volume to assess each provider’s applicable allowance and transfer charges.
Do not compare a VM with a viewer-distribution pipeline
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS implementation guide describes a broader architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront to distribute a stream to viewers. One example estimates $1,505.60 per hour for roughly 10,000 viewers under its stated assumptions, including US East (N. Virginia), bitrate, cache, and highest-bitrate conditions. That is not a price quote for one EC2 VM sending one feed to YouTube; it illustrates how viewer distribution can dominate a bill.

Choose settings YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular VM or network route will sustain the stream. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
The figures above are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations. YouTube also publishes minimum and maximum ranges for AV1 and H.265; do not assume the H.264 values apply to those codecs. Match the encoder’s codec and profile to YouTube’s current guidance.

Make a like-for-like provider decision
| Decision factor | What to specify or verify | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder workload | Codec, resolution, frame rate, software or hardware encoding, and whether the source is live, a file, or a relay | Encoding load determines compute and memory needs; a prepared loop is not the same workload as encoding a live source. |
| Monthly compute | Exact instance type, OS, region, hours, and any applicable discounts | A continuous workload accrues recurring VM charges on either provider. |
| Outbound transfer | Bitrate multiplied by actual stream hours, provider tier, region, and applicable allowance | A continuous feed accumulates data transfer; allowances and charges differ in scope and geography. |
| Network capability | Instance-specific external egress specifications and sustained measured throughput to YouTube | Published ceilings do not guarantee end-to-end throughput. |
| Resilience | Process supervision, VM restart behavior, health checks, alerts, and recovery capacity | A VM or encoder process can fail independently of the provider’s infrastructure. |
| Architecture | One stream sent to YouTube versus a service that also transcodes or distributes to viewers | These designs have different resource and transfer profiles. |
- Define the profile: record source type, codec, resolution, frame rate, target bitrate, and whether encoding is required.
- Estimate monthly hours and transfer: calculate the intended running time and bitrate-based payload, then account for protocol overhead and expected restarts.
- Select a candidate instance in each provider: choose based on the actual encoding workload, region, OS, and storage needs rather than an entry-level advertised price.
- Price both configurations: include compute, disks, outbound transfer, and relevant network resources in the provider calculators.
- Run a sustained test: use the intended encoder settings and monitor dropped frames, network throughput, CPU or GPU use, and process restarts before relying on the setup.
Plan for failures, not just bandwidth
A stream that must stay live needs recovery at both the process and VM levels. Configure a supervisor or equivalent process-restart mechanism for the encoder, determine how the VM behaves after a reboot, and use health checks and alerts to detect a stopped process or lost ingest. Test recovery deliberately: a process restart, VM restart, and network interruption can produce different outcomes. Keep the YouTube stream key private and use YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance when configuring ingest.
Google documents that its egress limit depends on machine series and destination, and actual bandwidth may be lower because of drivers, packet size, protocol overhead, flow count, guest OS settings, congestion, or disk I/O competition. The listed shared-core E2 ceiling is 2 Gbps, but this is not a sustained-throughput guarantee to YouTube. Google Cloud network bandwidth documentation

- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient stream: check that the target bitrate fits YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; verify the instance’s measured outbound throughput and route, rather than relying on its published ceiling.
- The stream stops when the VM reboots: configure the encoder process to start automatically and verify the VM’s restart behavior. Test a reboot before depending on unattended operation.
- The encoder process exits but the VM remains up: add process supervision and alerting so the encoder restarts or an operator is notified.
- The bill is higher than the VM estimate: check outbound transfer, storage, and network-resource line items, and verify whether the stream is only going to YouTube or also being distributed to viewers.
- A small VM appears inexpensive but cannot encode smoothly: choose capacity based on the real codec and profile, then test CPU/GPU utilization and dropped frames under sustained load.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo offers a simpler alternative to managing a VM and encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
