To restart FFmpeg when it exits on a Google Cloud Linux VM, run it in the foreground as a systemd service and configure the service to restart on failure. Enable the service at boot as well. This handles an FFmpeg process failure while the VM is still running; Compute Engine’s VM restart policy addresses certain VM-level failures, not an individual process exiting. A process restart may reconnect the encoder, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast or that the same live event will resume. Check YouTube Live Control Room after recovery.
Choose recovery for the failure you need to handle
There are separate failure layers: the FFmpeg process, the guest operating system, the Compute Engine VM, and YouTube ingest. A restart policy at one layer does not automatically supervise the others. Google Cloud and YouTube documentation checked on October 3, 2026 describe the platform behaviors; the example systemd setup below is implementation guidance, not a tested deployment.
| Option | Addresses | Recovery behavior | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
systemd on a Compute Engine VM |
FFmpeg exits while the guest OS and VM remain up | Can relaunch the service according to its restart policy | You must configure the service, credentials, logging, and boot behavior. |
| Compute Engine automatic restart | Eligible VM termination caused by Compute Engine host or system events | Can restart the VM under its scheduling policy | It does not restart an FFmpeg child process that exits while the VM remains up; manual guest shutdown is excluded. Google Cloud documents VM scheduling and restart options. |
| Cloud Run instance restart policy | Container process failure under a supported instance lifecycle | Can restart on failure or always, with up to three sequential attempts when restarts are enabled | Retries are bounded. The available Cloud Run FFmpeg tutorial covers offline transcoding jobs, not a continuous live-stream deployment. |
| YouTube backup encoder | Primary encoder or network failure when a backup encoder is configured | YouTube advises testing player rollover to the backup | Requires a separately configured backup; it is not a restart of the original FFmpeg process. |
For a persistent Linux VM, use a guest process supervisor such as systemd for FFmpeg. Use VM automatic restart for the eligible VM events it covers. If you need protection against encoder or network failure during a production stream, a separately configured backup encoder is a different recovery mechanism.
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service on Compute Engine
1. Prepare the VM and stream inputs
Install FFmpeg on the Linux VM and identify the exact input, output format, and YouTube ingest details for your stream. The right FFmpeg flags depend on whether the source is a file, camera, network feed, or generated media, as well as the VM’s available encoding resources. Do not copy a universal command without matching those details.

In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key for the selected stream. YouTube explains that the key tells the encoder where to send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat the key as a credential: do not commit it to source control or expose it in a broadly readable file or diagnostic output. If you suspect it has been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions.
2. Create a foreground service
Create a dedicated systemd unit that starts FFmpeg in the foreground, so systemd can observe when the process exits. A typical policy uses Restart=on-failure and a short RestartSec delay to avoid a rapid restart loop. Store credentials using a root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions or a managed secret-delivery mechanism, rather than embedding the key in a script or command that may appear in logs.

Unit syntax, service user, paths, environment handling, and FFmpeg arguments vary by distribution and source. Adapt the unit to the VM instead of treating a generic template as ready to deploy. Do not background FFmpeg inside a shell wrapper; the supervisor needs to track the process it should restart.
3. Enable the service at boot and check its state
After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, start the service, and enable it to start after boot. Use systemctl status to check its current state and journalctl for service logs. Confirm that the unit is running before relying on it for a live stream. Enabling a service for boot does not itself make an FFmpeg process restart on every type of failure; the service’s restart policy controls that behavior.

4. Test process recovery separately from VM recovery
Before using the setup for a production broadcast, verify both conditions independently: that the service starts after a VM reboot, and that systemd relaunches FFmpeg after a controlled process stop or failure. Then check YouTube’s preview and health status. A successful service restart proves only that the process relaunched, not that YouTube is receiving usable video.
Configure YouTube ingest and confirm reconnection
Use the URL and key for the intended YouTube stream, and verify that the output settings match the selected stream and available network capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for sending a live feed; its guidance also recommends testing with similar audio and motion before the event and monitoring stream health during it. See YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance and encoder setup guidance.

When FFmpeg comes back, inspect the incoming preview and health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Restarting FFmpeg can re-establish ingest, but the reviewed YouTube guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted continuity or that every reconnection resumes a particular live event. Confirm what viewers can actually receive before assuming the broadcast is back.

- FFmpeg keeps restarting: inspect the systemd journal for exit status, missing inputs, authentication problems, and output errors. Correct the underlying cause; repeated automatic restarts cannot fix a bad path, invalid key, or unsupported encoding configuration.
- The service is not running after a reboot: check that the unit is enabled, that systemd loaded the current unit file, and that the configured user can access FFmpeg, inputs, and secrets.
- The VM is stopped or rebooted unexpectedly: confirm the instance’s state and review instance logs and Cloud Monitoring dashboards for shutdown or reboot events. Google Cloud recommends those sources for diagnosing VM lifecycle events; they are distinct from checking FFmpeg process health. See Compute Engine VM shutdown diagnostics.
- FFmpeg is active but YouTube shows no incoming video: verify the stream URL and key, selected live stream, output configuration, and network connectivity. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages rather than relying on the service status alone.
- The live player does not recover as expected: treat process restart and YouTube player continuity as separate outcomes. Check the live event’s status in Live Control Room; if you need encoder failover, configure and test a separate backup encoder. YouTube’s backup encoder guidance describes testing rollover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, which validates failover rather than systemd recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate an FFmpeg VM, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off. Each slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not live camera input. Start the StreamNeo free day.
