Estimate storage from the recording’s total average bitrate and how long you will keep it—not from resolution alone. In decimal units, use GB ≈ total bitrate (Mbps) × hours × 0.45. At 1 Mbps recorded continuously, that is about 10.8 GB per day before overhead. For example, a stream averaging 6 Mbps video plus 160 Kbps audio uses about 66 GB per day, 2.0 TB in 30 days, or 24 TB in a year.
Calculate storage from bitrate and retention
The formula estimates media payload in decimal gigabytes. Add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate before calculating. If the recorder saves multiple renditions, separate camera feeds, or a backup copy, count each stored version as well.
Formula: total bitrate in Mbps × recording hours × 0.45 = approximate decimal GB.
| Example recording rate | 24 hours | 30 days | 365 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 Mbps video + 160 Kbps audio = 6.16 Mbps total | About 66 GB | About 2.0 TB | About 24 TB |
These are calculated estimates, not measured file sizes or an education-specific benchmark. Allow extra capacity for container and filesystem overhead, bitrate variation, and operating headroom. Actual requirements depend on the recorder’s average output bitrate, number of stored streams or copies, and retention period.

Choose a bitrate that suits the teaching material
Use the recording system’s actual average bitrate when sizing storage. Live-platform guidance can help you choose a starting point, but a local recording may use a different bitrate or codec. Resolution alone does not tell you how large the resulting file will be.
- YouTube Help’s current H.264 live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. It advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream.
- Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best-practices table, accessed 2026-10-03, lists 8 Mbps H.264 or 7.2 Mbps H.265 for 720p25/30, and 20 Mbps H.264 or 15 Mbps H.265 for 1080p50/60.
These are service-specific recommendations, not universal recorder settings. Google Cloud separately lists maximum output bitrates of 3 Mbps for SD, 15 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps for UHD. Those limits apply to that service’s output; do not treat them as general recording limits.

A lower bitrate reduces storage use but can make the lesson harder to follow. Check slides, small text, handwriting, demonstrations, and movement at the chosen setting. If the bitrate varies, record a representative lesson and use the resulting file size or measured average bitrate to refine the estimate.
Size a storage plan step by step
- Set the retention period. Decide how many days or months each recording must remain available.
- Find the actual recording rate. Include audio. For variable-rate recording, measure a representative sample rather than relying on a peak setting.
- Calculate the media estimate. Multiply total Mbps by recording hours and by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB.
- Count every saved copy. Multiply for separate feeds, renditions, or backup copies that are retained for the same period.
- Add headroom and check usable capacity. Leave room for overhead, recording variation, and normal system operation. Drive labels use decimal units, while some operating systems display capacity in binary units, so the displayed figure may look lower.
- For cloud recording, include the whole workflow. Account for storage class, retrieval, and any additional rendition or metadata needs. Amazon IVS documentation describes recording media and metadata to an S3 prefix; it does not establish the cost or suitability of that setup for every organization.
Choose local storage or a cloud archive
A high-capacity external hard drive or NAS drive is a straightforward fit when recordings will be retained locally. Choose its usable capacity only after calculating bitrate and retention; “24/7” or “1080p” by itself is not a sufficient sizing rule. No particular drive has been tested or endorsed here.

Cloud object storage may suit off-site archiving or team access. Whether it is a better fit depends on how long you retain recordings, who needs access, how often files are retrieved, and the associated storage and retrieval costs. For either approach, compare usable capacity, retention period, off-site protection, sharing needs, read/write workload, and warranty or retrieval costs as applicable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the archive separate from a 24/7 YouTube playback service
If the goal is to keep an uploaded education video playing continuously on YouTube, rather than to archive every live session as a recording, StreamNeo is a different kind of service. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it is not a recording archive. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, so calculate archive capacity separately if you need to retain full recordings.

Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo then loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Your uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
