To record separate microphone, game, and other audio in Streamlabs Desktop, switch the output mode to Advanced, enable recording tracks, then assign each source to the tracks you want. Keep in mind that the live stream uses one selected audio track; a source recorded on another track alone may not be heard by viewers.
Set up multi-track recording
- Open Settings > Output.
- Change Output Mode from Simple to Advanced.
- Open the Recording tab and select the audio tracks to record. Streamlabs documents support for up to six separate recording tracks.
- Choose a recording format that supports multiple audio tracks. Streamlabs’ multi-track guide lists MP4 and MKV and says FLV does not support multiple tracks. Its selective-routing guide also lists TS. Because the official format lists differ, MP4 or MKV is the shared recommendation; check that your editor accepts the chosen format.
Tracks are separate audio streams inside the recording file, not separate video files. They let you adjust sources such as a microphone and desktop or game audio independently during editing.
Assign sources to the right tracks
- In the mixer, open Advanced Audio Settings with its settings gear.
- For each source, check the track or tracks where you want it recorded. For example, put desktop or game audio on one recording track and your microphone on another.
- Open Settings > Output > Streaming and select the audio track for the live stream. Add every source your audience should hear to that track as well as to any separate recording tracks it needs.
Recording-track assignments and the selected stream track serve different purposes. A source assigned only to an additional recording track should not be assumed to reach the live audience.
Check the result before an important recording
- Make a short test recording with the sources you plan to use.
- Import it into your editing application and confirm that the expected tracks appear and contain the intended audio.
- If you changed the track assignments, make another brief sample before starting a long session.

Capturing one application
Application Audio Capture is useful when you want audio from a chosen application. Streamlabs advises disabling the general Desktop Audio source when using it; otherwise, computer audio may be captured as well and echoes can occur.

Separating what reaches the stream and recording
Selective Recording provides additional control over whether a source goes to the stream, the recording, or both. Streamlabs’ advanced routing example uses VoiceMeeter Banana to route sources through virtual inputs. That is an optional software-routing approach for complex setups, not a requirement for ordinary multi-track recording.
Common problems and fixes
- The file has no separate audio tracks: Confirm Output Mode is set to Advanced, recording tracks are selected in the Recording tab, and the file format supports multiple tracks. FLV is not supported for this purpose according to Streamlabs.
- A source is missing from the recording: Open Advanced Audio Settings in the mixer and check that the source is assigned to a recording track. Verify the result with a short sample in your editor.
- Viewers cannot hear a source that is in the recording: Check the selected track under Output > Streaming and ensure the source is assigned to that track.
- Audio is doubled or echoes during application capture: Disable general Desktop Audio when using Application Audio Capture, as Streamlabs recommends.
- Your editor does not show the expected tracks: Check its compatibility with the selected container and inspect a fresh short recording. MP4 and MKV are listed by both Streamlabs guides; the guides differ on whether TS is supported.
