Use the current size chart for the exact garment and supplier, and make clear whether its numbers describe the garment or the person wearing it. To help shoppers choose, label the units and show them how to compare the chart with a similar item they already own. A size label alone is not a reliable fit guide across different products or brands.
Start with the exact garment and supplier
A size chart belongs to a particular product, not to every T-shirt, hoodie, or item carrying the same size label. Start with the product page for the blank you plan to sell, then check its current chart, cut, size range, and any fit notes. If you change the blank or supplier, check again before publishing: the old chart may no longer describe the item.

For example, Printful’s T-shirt guide and hoodie guide apply to their respective products, not to all tees and hoodies. The hoodie guide includes a runs-small recommendation for that particular product; it is not a general rule to size up in hoodies. Say what the chart measures
Put the measurement basis directly above or beside the chart. Flat garment width and a person’s chest circumference are different measurements: the first is a straight line across the garment, while the second goes around the body. Do not label one as the other or invite shoppers to compare them as if they were equivalent.

Show shoppers how to compare a garment they own
A comparison with a similar item can make measurements more intuitive, but it cannot guarantee a perfect fit. Tell shoppers to choose a comparable garment with a fit they like, lay it flat without stretching it, and compare the corresponding dimensions—not a flat measurement against a body circumference.

Measure T-shirt length and width
For the T-shirt shown in Printful’s guide, length runs from the high point shoulder beside the collar to the bottom hem. Width runs across the garment from the seam under one sleeve to the seam under the other. Follow the diagram and measurement points for the exact product, since other garments may use different points or labels.
Use an appropriate tape measure
A flexible cloth measuring tape is useful for measuring a sample garment. If a shopper already has a suitable tape, there is no need to buy one just for this task. Keep the garment relaxed and flat; stretching it while measuring can make the comparison misleading.

Choose units and publish a readable chart
Use one clear unit system consistently and state it in the chart heading or column labels. Printful documents metric (cm) and imperial (in) options for product size guides. For a primarily US audience, inches may be familiar; for international shoppers, including centimeters as well can make comparison easier. Do not mix units without labeling each value. Before publishing, check that the chart is legible on mobile, the size names match the product options, and the measurements have not been copied from a different cut or blank. If you publish both units, convert values carefully and make rounding clear rather than implying false precision.

Explain fit notes and measurement variation carefully
Use fit language only when it comes from the supplier’s guidance for the exact item. Do not assume that a T-shirt’s note applies to a hoodie, or that a size marked “M” will fit the same across brands. There is no single cross-supplier sizing scale established here.
The cited Printful T-shirt and hoodie guides state that product measurements may vary by up to 2 inches (5 cm). That tolerance belongs to those product guides; do not present it as a universal apparel-manufacturing allowance or as a promise for other suppliers.

Check print scale separately from garment fit
A size chart tells shoppers about fit; it does not necessarily tell them how large the artwork will look on each size. Printful Help Center says, “As a general rule, we don’t scale designs based on garment size,” while also describing product-specific exceptions, including downscaling for smaller sizes and smaller print areas. Final checks before your merch goes live
- Confirm the chart matches the exact supplier, product, cut, and current size range.
- State whether values are garment measurements or body “to fit” guidance.
- Label units clearly and keep the chart consistent.
- Give shoppers a garment-comparison method and name the measurement points for that item.
- Attribute fit notes and tolerances to the specific supplier guide that provides them.
- Review the chart and print-area guidance again if the blank, supplier, or design changes.
