To keep an OBS loop live after closing a Windows laptop, set its plugged-in lid action so Windows stays awake, configure and test the looping video in OBS, then confirm the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving the laptop unattended. Test with the lid closed while the laptop is plugged in: lid settings and closed-lid behavior can vary by device, and the official guidance does not establish a universal thermal-safety rule for every laptop.
1. Set Windows to stay awake when you close the lid
- Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- For the plugged-in setting, choose the option that keeps the computer awake (commonly labelled Do nothing), then save the change if Windows offers that button.
- Keep the distinction clear: turning off the display is not the same as putting the computer to sleep. Check the action for both plugged-in and battery use; this workflow depends on the plugged-in setting.
Microsoft notes that most laptops can go to sleep when the lid is closed, and that available settings may depend on the PC hardware and manufacturer. A manufacturer power utility or firmware setting may also affect behavior, so verify what your particular laptop does rather than assuming the Windows choice guarantees it.
2. Configure and test the looping video in OBS
- In OBS, add the video as a media source and enable its loop behavior using the controls available in your installed version. The exact control label and click sequence can vary; do not assume that merely adding the file makes it repeat.
- Play the source through to the end and watch it restart. Check that the audio and picture continue as intended across the repeat before connecting it to a live stream.
- If you use display capture and it shows a blank image, check the GPU and capture setup. OBS recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU. Its laptop guidance says OBS 27 and later supports a capture method for cases where OBS and the monitor use different GPUs; the described Windows requirement is Windows 10 version 1903 or later.
If the laptop is using media-source playback rather than display capture, the display-capture guidance may not apply. Avoid changing graphics settings unless you have a symptom that points to a GPU or capture issue.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send an encoder feed to that stream. YouTube supports custom stream keys and encoder-triggered auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion option where supported. RTMPS encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube.
- Start the OBS encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that it shows the intended video and audio before proceeding.
4. Choose settings that your connection can sustain
Choose the resolution and frame rate you actually need, then set the bitrate to suit both YouTube’s guidance and the upload capacity available at the laptop’s location. Run an upload speed test on the connection you will use for streaming; a result from a different network or location is not a reliable basis for this setup.

The range is YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026; the page does not display a publication date. It is a recommendation, not a promise that a particular connection will sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
5. Verify the stream before closing the lid
- Start OBS and wait until YouTube’s Live Control Room reports the incoming feed and displays the preview.
- Check the channel’s watch page on another device, including a mobile device. Confirm the video is the intended loop and listen for audio problems.
- Monitor the stream health indicators and audio/video quality. YouTube recommends testing the setup before the event and advises testing failover in advance if you rely on it.
- With the laptop plugged in, close the lid for a short test. From another device, confirm that the live page continues to receive the loop and that it restarts at the end.
Closing the lid is not a substitute for resilience planning. The cited guidance does not establish how a particular laptop, router, or local connection will behave through a power or internet interruption. If those risks matter, test your actual setup and plan for them separately.

6. Keep copyright and channel rules in view
A technically continuous stream is not necessarily permitted content. Use only video and audio you have the rights or permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules for your channel and content. A loop does not make reused material original or remove the need to comply with platform policies.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
