Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShort answer: Editing a local FFmpeg concat list while FFmpeg is running is not a documented way to add or replace upcoming videos. To change the queue without disconnecting YouTube, use a playback controller that can switch inputs while one encoder stays connected. If your setup cannot do that, plan a controlled restart rather than relying on an undocumented hot reload.
First, identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to different layers of a streaming setup, and changing one does not necessarily change another:
- A local concat input list is a file FFmpeg reads to define media inputs. Editing it during a run is not documented as a way to update the active queue.
- An HLS output playlist is a manifest FFmpeg creates and updates as it publishes segments. That output behavior does not make the local input list dynamically editable. FFmpeg’s HLS documentation says a VOD playlist must not change: FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation.
- A playlist in a separate player or controller may be changeable while the encoder remains connected, depending on that system’s queue and handoff behavior.
FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter, concat demuxer, and concat protocol as ways to join files; it does not describe a live editor for a running concat list: FFmpeg FAQ: concatenating video files.
How to change upcoming videos while keeping the YouTube connection
- Keep the encoder output connected to YouTube. Avoid stopping the process that owns the live output connection if your goal is to keep the broadcast connected.
- Put queue control upstream of that output. Use a player or controller designed to select or queue files while feeding a continuous input to the still-running encoder. The exact controller and transition behavior must be validated for your setup; the FFmpeg concat documentation does not certify a particular live queue system.
- Check compatibility before switching sources. Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, audio presence, and audio layout across the files. Different parameters can complicate a handoff, and the cited documentation does not guarantee seamless transitions between arbitrary files.
- Test privately or in a controlled stream. Confirm the queue changes as intended, audio and video remain synchronized, and the YouTube connection stays active before relying on it for a live event.
What FFmpeg’s concat methods do—and do not do
| Method | What the FFmpeg FAQ says | What that means for a live queue |
|---|---|---|
| Concat filter | FFmpeg recommends this when re-encoding is needed. | It is a joining method, not a documented live queue editor. |
| Concat demuxer | Useful for file-level concatenation when avoiding re-encoding is possible. | A concat list defines input; the FAQ does not promise a running process will reread edits to that list. |
| Concat protocol | Listed as another concatenation approach. | Its inclusion does not establish dynamic queue updates or seamless switching. |
For the concat filter, the FAQ says: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” That recommendation concerns joining files, not changing a playlist during an active broadcast. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

If your output uses YouTube HLS ingestion
HLS output settings are separate from how you choose the next source. YouTube Help says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream: YouTube Help: HLS ingestion.
For YouTube HLS ingestion, the documented requirements are:

- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Use TS (Transport Stream) segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- Keep the rolling playlist to no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
- Do not use byte ranges.
- Do not encrypt the stream other than with HTTPS.
These requirements govern HLS delivery to YouTube; they do not make a local FFmpeg concat input list hot-reloadable. RTMP is a continuous transport, while HLS delivers segments.
When a controlled restart is the safer option
If your current input path is a fixed concat list and you have no controller that can change sources, do not assume editing the file will update the queue. Arrange a controlled stop, update the input list, and reconnect according to your streaming workflow. That may interrupt the broadcast; the practical alternative is to adopt and validate a system designed to change inputs without ending the encoder’s output connection.

Troubleshooting a source handoff
- The new file never plays: The active input may not reread the edited concat list. Use a queue controller or schedule a controlled restart.
- Video or audio breaks at the transition: Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, and audio presence/layout. Test with the actual files and pipeline; seamless switching is not guaranteed for arbitrary sources.
- YouTube disconnects during the update: Check whether the process that owns the output connection was stopped or restarted. A stable output requires the encoder connection to remain active during the handoff.
- HLS latency is higher than expected: YouTube states that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends segments. Review the HLS requirements above and the YouTube HLS guidance.
