Fix an FFmpeg concat error by identifying which stage is failing: opening the playlist, joining compatible media streams, or sending the finished output to YouTube. The concat demuxer does not normalize unlike files, and YouTube ingest settings cannot repair a malformed playlist. Work through those stages in order.
1. Fix playlist parsing and file paths
The concat demuxer reads a text file containing directives, not a regular media playlist. A minimal playlist looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part-01.mp4'
file 'part-02.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line: no leading space and no byte-order mark. Alternatively, specify the input format explicitly. The FFmpeg documentation describes the header, path syntax, and safe-path behavior in its concat demuxer documentation.
Use the concat demuxer explicitly
A basic input command is:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat [output options] output.mp4Replace the bracketed portion with options suitable for your output; this is a command shape, not a complete streaming configuration. Input options belong before the relevant -i, because FFmpeg applies options according to their position.

The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. If the specific error is a safe-path rejection, -safe 0 allows arbitrary file names. Use it only when you trust the playlist and all referenced paths. It is optional when every path meets the safe-path rules.
Check the files and quoting
- Confirm every referenced file exists and is readable from the directory where FFmpeg runs.
- Quote or escape spaces and special characters in paths according to the concat script syntax.
- If your installed FFmpeg may differ from the rolling online documentation, check its local options with
ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat.
2. Check whether the media can be concatenated
The concat demuxer virtually reads input files in sequence and adjusts their timestamps onto one timeline. It expects the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Simply listing files together does not make different formats, stream layouts, or timing compatible.

Compare inputs with ffprobe
Probe each file and compare its video and audio stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and duration. These checks follow from the demuxer’s compatibility requirements; matching these fields alone is not a guarantee that every join will work. Then test a short playlist and inspect FFmpeg’s stream mapping and timestamp messages.
Investigate gaps, freezes, and timestamp errors
Each file’s duration determines where the next file starts. If duration metadata is wrong, inferred badly, or affected by a truncated file, the joined output can contain gaps or other artifacts. A playlist duration directive can override a file’s stored duration, but use it only when you have a defensible value.

When inputs have differing stream properties or need normalization, do not expect the demuxer to re-encode them into compatibility. Use the concat filter when re-encoding is acceptable or necessary; FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ distinguishes that approach from the demuxer, which is useful when avoiding re-encoding.
The demuxer’s auto_convert option is on by default, but its documented conversion is limited. In relevant cases, including resolution changes, FFmpeg currently adds the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter. It does not make unlike codecs or arbitrary stream layouts compatible.

3. Check YouTube ingest after the output is sound
Playlist parsing and media compatibility are separate from live ingest. Once FFmpeg produces coherent output, check the encoder settings against YouTube’s live encoder guidance. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds.
Use the applicable bitrate guidance
In its current live-streaming guidance accessed in 2026, YouTube recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. These are recommendations, not performance guarantees. Consult YouTube’s current table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating from these two figures.

Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. A bad keyframe interval, bitrate mode, audio setting, or unstable connection can affect ingest, but none of those settings fixes an invalid concat header or incompatible input streams.
4. Troubleshoot in a useful order
- Capture the evidence: save the exact command, complete FFmpeg error,
ffmpeg -version, and playlist text. Redact your YouTube stream key before sharing logs. - Verify playlist syntax: check the exact first-line header if relying on auto-detection, or specify
-f concatbefore-i. - Verify path access: confirm each file exists and is readable; quote or escape paths. Use
-safe 0only when the observed issue is safe-path rejection and all inputs are trusted. - Compare streams: use
ffprobeto check stream count, codec, time base, dimensions, frame rate, and duration. Stream-copy concatenation depends on the demuxer’s matching-stream requirements. - Inspect timing: if the output has gaps, freezes, or discontinuities, examine durations and timestamps. Try a playlist duration override only with a reliable duration.
- Change method if needed: if the inputs require normalization, test the concat filter and re-encode instead of asking the demuxer to reconcile them.
- Validate the live path: after the output is correct, check codec, keyframe interval, CBR, audio, and network stability; run a test stream and monitor YouTube’s health messages.
If those steps do not isolate the fault, the useful next evidence is the exact error, FFmpeg version, playlist, and probe output. Without those details, there is no single fix that can be identified for every concat failure.
