How to Stream 4K 60fps ProRes Files to YouTube Live from OBS

Use OBS as the ProRes player and live encoder: set 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps, choose a YouTube-supported codec, configure bitrate and keyframes, and test the complete stream.

Yes: OBS can play a local ProRes video and stream it to YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps, provided your computer can decode the file and encode a sustained live output. Treat those as two separate jobs: OBS reads the ProRes file as a media source, then encodes the outgoing stream in a codec YouTube accepts. YouTube’s English live-encoder guide recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 4K60, or 50 Mbps for H.264. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS where supported, and test the exact file and setup before the event.

How the ProRes-to-YouTube workflow works

ProRes is the file you play locally, not the codec you should send to YouTube as the live ingest. YouTube’s live settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; they do not list ProRes as a live ingest codec. OBS’s Media Source can play a local MOV file, while OBS encodes the broadcast output in a supported live codec. In short: ProRes in, YouTube-compatible encoded stream out.

OBS is free and open-source. Its Media Source “adds different types of media files to your scenes.” See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Studio overview.

Before you configure OBS

  • Have the ProRes file available locally and confirm you can play and hear it. MOV is among the file extensions listed in the OBS Media Sources guide; the extension alone does not guarantee that every ProRes profile, frame rate, or color configuration will decode smoothly on every computer.
  • Check that your computer can sustain playback and encoding at the intended resolution and frame rate. There is no universal hardware requirement established by the cited guides; test your actual file on your actual system.
  • Make sure your internet upload can sustain the bitrate you choose, with capacity left for normal variation. YouTube advises running an upload speed test but does not prescribe a universal headroom multiplier.
  • Create or select the YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio so you can copy its stream URL and key. Treat the stream key like a password.

Set up the ProRes source in OBS

  1. Add a scene and source. In OBS, select or create the scene for the broadcast. In Sources, choose + and select Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, then browse to the local video file.
  2. Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop if the file should repeat. Use Restart playback when source becomes active if each activation should start from the beginning. Hardware decoding, when available, is an option in the source settings; test whether it improves playback on your setup. If the file should stop when it ends, configure the source to hide when playback ends rather than looping.
  3. Fit the picture to the canvas. Set the scene composition so the video is framed as intended. A source with a different aspect ratio or dimensions may need scaling or cropping; check the preview rather than assuming a 4K file automatically fills a 4K canvas correctly.
  4. Check audio. Watch OBS’s audio meters while the file plays, listen to the output, and confirm the intended audio source is included in the stream mix. A silent or clipped source should be corrected before going live.

Options and labels can vary by OBS version and platform. The source behaviors above are documented in the Media Sources guide. The OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide explains supported formats and codecs.

Set 4K resolution and 60 fps

  1. Open Settings > Video in OBS.
  2. Set the Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160 if you are composing the stream at 4K. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160 to send 4K rather than a downscaled output.
  3. Set Common FPS Values to 60 (or the equivalent 60 fps option shown by your OBS version). Confirm that the source and output are intended to run at 60 fps.
  4. Apply the settings, then watch a representative section of the file in the preview. OBS advises testing 60 fps performance; a setting in the menu does not prove that a given computer can maintain it under load.

OBS distinguishes the canvas from the scaled output resolution, as described in the OBS Studio overview. If your source is not 3840Ă—2160 or does not have a 60 fps timeline, OBS can scale or repeat frames, but that does not create detail or motion captured in the original file.

Choose the outgoing codec and bitrate

In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder. Exact encoder names and availability depend on your OBS version, operating system, and hardware. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video. The OBS format guide describes H.264 as its default broadly compatible web codec; choose an encoder actually available on your machine and test it before relying on it.

Outgoing codec YouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps minimum YouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps recommended bitrate Notes
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Listed by YouTube for live video; not supported for HDR in the cited guide.
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Listed by YouTube for live video and as an HDR option.
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps The OBS format guide describes H.264 as its default broadly compatible web codec.

These figures follow the US English YouTube live encoder settings guide, accessed 2026-10-03; YouTube can revise its recommendations, and localized versions may display the table differently. The recommended rate is not a guarantee of smooth playback: your encoder and upload connection must sustain the chosen setting.

  1. In the OBS streaming output settings, select the available encoder for the codec you intend to use.
  2. Set the rate control to CBR (constant bitrate).
  3. Enter the recommended bitrate for your codec from the table, if your sustained upload and encoding performance can support it. If not, test a lower supported setting and confirm the resulting stream quality and stability.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

For SDR, YouTube’s guide recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, it lists H.265/HEVC and 10-bit, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm the source color characteristics, encoder settings, and YouTube output together: the cited guidance does not establish how a particular ProRes file and computer will map HDR through OBS.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and locate its stream settings.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate; the live settings guide describes custom stream keys for manually selecting resolution when needed.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available, then paste the key in the stream key field. If using a manually configured server, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the appropriate fields.
  4. Use RTMPS when the selected YouTube server and OBS workflow support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  5. Keep the stream key private. If you expose it, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.

Refer to YouTube’s live encoder settings for current stream connection and key guidance; labels in YouTube Studio may change.

Run a test and go live

  1. Start playback in OBS and inspect the video, framing, and audio meters. Test a section with motion and sound similar to what viewers will see.
  2. Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health messages before announcing or relying on the event.
  3. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and YouTube warnings. A stable local preview does not test the internet connection; a stable connection does not prove the computer can decode and encode the source.
  4. After confirming the feed, start the public live event in YouTube Studio if the stream is scheduled or waiting for your manual start. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

At 4K/2160, YouTube’s cited live settings guidance does not offer its low-latency option; expect normal latency rather than low latency.

Troubleshoot common problems

OBS cannot open or smoothly play the ProRes file

  • Confirm the file path is valid and that the file plays locally. Try the same file in a fresh Media Source and check whether the issue persists.
  • Test the actual ProRes profile, frame rate, and color configuration. MOV support does not guarantee smooth playback for every file on every host.
  • Try toggling the Media Source’s hardware decoding option, if available, and compare playback. No particular decoder or computer is universally required by the cited documentation.

The stream is not 4K or is not 60 fps

  • Check both Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution in Settings > Video; confirm the output is 3840Ă—2160.
  • Verify OBS is set to 60 fps and that the YouTube stream setup is using the intended stream key or custom stream configuration.
  • Remember that upscaling a smaller file or setting a 60 fps output does not add source detail or native motion information.

YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames

  • Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate, then test again under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends an upload speed test, but does not give a universal safety margin.
  • Verify CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and ensure you selected a bitrate appropriate for the codec and 4K60 target.
  • If the connection or encoder cannot hold the target, reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest rather than assuming the recommended bitrate is achievable on every system.

YouTube rejects the stream or shows a codec or keyframe warning

  • Check that the outgoing live encoder is H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, not ProRes. ProRes is the local media source in this workflow.
  • Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds. Confirm the actual output encoder and settings rather than relying only on the OBS source file format.
  • Check YouTube Studio’s current stream-health message and settings guide; do not assume a saved stream key has the same manual resolution configuration as another stream.

Video works but audio is missing, delayed, or distorted

  • Check OBS’s audio meters during file playback and verify that the intended source is routed to the stream mix.
  • Inspect the output audio settings and use an audio codec supported by YouTube; the cited guide lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio.
  • Listen to the YouTube preview during a test and adjust the source or mix before the real event.

HDR looks wrong or is not available

  • For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its guide lists H.265/HEVC and 10-bit, and excludes AV1.
  • Check the source’s actual color format and the encoder’s output settings. Test the exact source-to-OBS-to-YouTube path; the guide does not guarantee the result for a particular file or system.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

A technically correct stream does not grant permission to broadcast the film, soundtrack, or other material in the ProRes file. Before streaming, confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission covering live online transmission, including music and any third-party footage. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream, so a private test is not proof that a public broadcast is cleared.

For documentary channels, also consider whether a recurring or continuous stream provides meaningful original context rather than simply replaying material. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions; consult YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than treating a successful ingest as approval.
