Short answer: YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish a general RTMP session limit that automatically ends a continuous stream. Its statement that streams “under 12 hours” are automatically archived describes archiving, not a 12-hour broadcast cap. If your stream stops when an output timer expires, check the encoder or relay’s duration setting, YouTube’s stream health, and the connection configuration before assuming YouTube ended it.
Does YouTube disconnect a stream after 12 hours?
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is an archive rule; the wording does not say streams are disconnected at 12 hours or establish a general maximum session duration. The guidance does not explain what caused any particular encoder’s “time limit” message. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is the source for the archiving statement.
Keep the two events separate when diagnosing the problem: an archive being created is not the same as the live output stopping. The exact elapsed time, encoder or relay in use, its output-duration setting, the event state, and the error or log message are needed to identify the cause.
Find which part of the setup is ending the output
Use the time of the disconnect and the messages from both sides to narrow down where the limit is configured. A repeatable stop at the same elapsed time is a useful clue, but it does not by itself prove that YouTube imposed the limit.

- Record the failure. Note the elapsed time when output stops. Save the encoder log and the stream-health status shown in YouTube Live Control Room before restarting, if available. YouTube’s API documentation describes stream status and health information, but it does not provide a universal error-to-fix mapping. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
- Check the encoder’s output duration. Look for a maximum-duration, session, scheduled-stop, or output-timer setting in the encoder. The available facts do not identify your encoder or its exact menu labels, so check its own documentation and log rather than assuming one universal path.
- Check any relay or intermediary. If the encoder sends through a third-party relay, inspect that service’s output duration and disconnect behavior as well as the YouTube destination settings. A relay may have its own timer independent of YouTube.
- Compare the event and connection details. Confirm that the intended YouTube live event is active and that the encoder is using that event’s server URL and stream key.
Verify the YouTube URL, stream key, and RTMPS connection
YouTube’s standard encoder setup separates the Live server URL from the stream key. Confirm both are for the intended stream; a wrong or stale value can prevent the encoder from delivering to the intended event. YouTube’s setup instructions describe entering the server URL and key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
If you use RTMPS, check the protocol and connection details rather than treating RTMP and RTMPS as interchangeable. Google’s guide calls for an rtmps URL, a valid YouTube ingestion server and path, port 443, TLS, and the SNI hostname. It warns that a library can time out when a cleartext RTMP connection is made to a YouTube server expecting RTMPS. - Confirm the URL begins with the protocol required by the selected YouTube endpoint.
- Check that the ingestion host and path are valid and have not been altered or truncated.
- For RTMPS, verify port 443, TLS, and SNI handling in the encoder or its RTMP library.
- Do not replace the stream key casually: make sure the encoder and the selected YouTube stream are using the same current key.
Read YouTube stream health without over-interpreting it
Check the stream-health information for delivery issues such as low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation lists health and status information, including these kinds of issues. They can affect delivery or quality, but the documentation does not say that any one of them explains every timer-triggered disconnect. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
Pair the health message with the encoder log and the exact time of failure. A health warning describes a delivery condition; the log may show whether the encoder stopped itself, lost its connection, or received an error. Neither alone necessarily identifies a universal cause.

What to do if you need continuity during a source interruption
A relay with disconnect protection is a continuity measure, not proof of or a fix for a YouTube RTMP duration limit. Restream documents a fallback feature with 5-, 15-, or 30-minute windows, paid-plan eligibility, and destination-stream termination if the source does not reconnect before the selected window ends. Check the service’s current plan eligibility and configured window before relying on it. Restream: Set up stream disconnect protection.
For any fallback option, compare where the timer applies, how long it waits for reconnection, what viewers see during the interruption, and whether it addresses the point where your stream actually fails. A fallback can reduce a gap during a source outage; it does not remove an encoder-side timer or correct a mismatched connection configuration.
