Choose the Studio scene for a host-led program; choose the scheduled event when the video itself should air at a set time.
Choose the right Restream workflow
| What you need | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Control playback during a show, speak over the video, or combine it with other program elements | Play the video as a Studio scene | You start and control playback as part of a Studio broadcast. |
| Have an uploaded video begin at a scheduled time without you being present | Create a prerecorded livestream event | Restream broadcasts the uploaded video as the scheduled event. Restream says it starts automatically even if you are offline. |
These are different workflows: a Studio scene is media played within a broadcast, while a scheduled prerecorded event is an uploaded video broadcast as the event. Restream’s guidance does not establish that a file-based event behaves in every respect like a live camera or encoder feed.
Prepare your video and YouTube channel
Check the file
Restream’s requirements page, published April 22, 2026, lists MP4, MOV, M4V, and MKV containers, H.264 video, AAC audio, and keyframe 2 as mandatory. It recommends 1920×1080 Full HD at 30 or 60 FPS; 4K may work where the destination platform supports it. Check the requirements page before upload in case supported settings change: Restream video file requirements.
Restream recommends adding 15–20 seconds of lead-in and tail to give destination platforms time to process the incoming stream. Avoid placing essential content at the very start or end of the file.

Check access and storage
- Confirm that livestreaming is enabled for the YouTube channel you intend to use. Restream says first-time YouTube live activation requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait.
- Authorize the correct YouTube account and channel. Restream says you must own the channel you add. See Restream’s YouTube connection instructions.
- Check your Restream plan’s stored-file count, size, and duration limits before uploading or scheduling. Those limits vary by subscription; there is no single current cap that applies to every account. See Restream’s upload instructions.
Option 1: Play a video as a Restream Studio scene
- Open or create a Studio stream. Add a scene for the video so you can select it as part of the program.
- Add the media. In the scene, choose Media. For a file stored in Restream, choose Video and select or upload the file. For a file on your device, choose Local video and select it from local storage.
- Set up playback. Confirm the video appears in the scene, then use Studio’s controls to play, pause, seek, loop, hide, or replace it and adjust its volume. You can add live commentary if that suits the program.
- Connect YouTube and start the broadcast. Select the intended channel and begin the Studio stream when you are ready. Check the preview before going live.
Restream documents one video from storage and one local video at a time in their respective playback workflows. For local playback, it recommends Chrome and a powerful computer. If playing a local file strains the device, use a video from Restream storage instead. See uploading videos and playing a video in Studio.
Option 2: Schedule an automatic prerecorded event
- Create a new stream in Restream. Choose Pre-recorded livestream, then choose Video.
- Select the video. Pick a file from Uploads or Recordings, or upload one. Upload & Stream supports a single video or a playlist and offers looping up to 10 times.
- Enter event details. Add the title, description, date, and time. You can also add an event post or thumbnail.
- Choose YouTube as the destination and create the event. Restream says the event starts automatically at the scheduled time, including when you are offline.
Review the event details and selected channel before creating it. Restream’s description of this workflow does not make entering a YouTube stream key a required step for a scheduled video-file event. More detail is available in Restream’s scheduled prerecorded event instructions.

Check the broadcast and troubleshoot common problems
For a Studio or encoder-based event, YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. These are useful event-day checks, not a guarantee that a stream will be error-free. See YouTube’s live encoder instructions.
| Problem | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| YouTube is missing or the channel cannot be authorized | Check that you are signing into the correct Google account and that you own the channel being added. If live streaming has not been activated before, complete phone verification and allow the 24-hour activation wait described by Restream. |
| A local video stutters or the computer struggles | Use Chrome as Restream recommends, reduce other demands on the computer, or switch to a video from Restream storage. |
| Upload or scheduling is blocked by a limit | Check the file count, size, and duration allowances for your current Restream subscription. They vary by plan. |
| Video is cut off at the start or end | Leave the recommended 15–20 seconds of lead-in and tail around the content that must be shown. |
| The video file is rejected or plays incorrectly | Check the container, H.264 video, AAC audio, and keyframe 2 against Restream’s published file requirements. Re-export to supported settings if needed. |
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Use only video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast. A pre-recorded file is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; scheduling it does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in the recording. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and make sure the channel is authorized for live streaming before the planned start.

If your goal is ongoing programming rather than one scheduled broadcast, plan the playlist and rights for every item in it. Restream’s event workflow supports looping a video or playlist up to 10 times, but that does not establish permission to repeat copyrighted material.
