How to Stream a Looping Video to YouTube Live with Fades Between Clips

OBS can loop a single video or a VLC playlist, but automatic fades between playlist clips are not documented. For dependable fades, render them into one continuous file and loop it in OBS.

For a smooth fade at every clip boundary, edit the clips into one continuous video with the fades already rendered, then loop that file in OBS Studio. OBS can loop a single Media Source and can fade between scenes, but its VLC playlist source does not document automatic fades between playlist items. For separate files, VLC Video can loop the playlist; a fade requires scene switching or a separately configured workflow.

Choose how to play the clips

Approach Best fit Loop setting Fade between clips Dependency
One rendered video in Media Source A continuous programme where transitions need to happen predictably Enable Loop on the file Render the fades into the video before streaming A video editing and export workflow
Separate files in VLC Video A simple ordered or shuffled playlist Enable Loop Playlist; configure shuffle if wanted The OBS documentation does not promise automatic fades between playlist items. Scene transitions apply when switching scenes. VLC installed with the same architecture as OBS

For a documentary stream that must run as a continuous programme, the rendered-file method is the more predictable choice when every clip boundary needs a fade. This recommendation follows from the documented OBS source and transition capabilities; it is not a claim that OBS has tested or certified a particular editing workflow.

Prepare the programme and confirm streaming rights

  1. Check permission. Use footage and audio you own or are authorized to stream. A live format does not remove copyright obligations.
  2. Pick the playback approach. Either assemble the clips and transitions on one editing timeline, or keep the clips as separate files for a VLC playlist.
  3. Set the clip order and transition timing. For the rendered-file approach, add a fade at each desired boundary in the editor and export a continuous file. The ideal fade duration depends on the material; check the exported transitions before going live.
  4. Keep a local copy of the export. OBS Media Source will play the local file, so make sure it remains available at the path you select.

Set up a looping source in OBS

Loop one rendered file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the exported video file.
  2. Enable Loop in the source properties. The file will repeat when it reaches its end.
  3. Check the scene preview for framing and confirm the soundtrack is audible through OBS’s audio mixer.

OBS documents the Media Source loop option in its Media Sources guide. Since the fades are part of the exported video, the source does not need to detect clip boundaries or trigger transitions.

Loop separate files with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before configuring the source. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the clip files in the order you want them to play.
  3. Leave shuffle off if the clips must play in that order, and enable Loop Playlist.
  4. Preview the playlist and listen for audio levels and gaps at the boundaries.

OBS documents playlist looping and shuffle for VLC Video, but not automatic crossfades between playlist entries. Do not treat the playlist’s loop setting as a fade setting.

How to make fades in OBS

OBS scenes can contain one or more sources. Its built-in Fade and Cut transitions change from the outgoing scene to the incoming scene; they do not establish automatic fades between files in one VLC playlist. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

For an automatic continuous loop

Put the fades into the video in an editor, export the completed programme as one file, then use the Media Source loop method. This makes the clip-to-clip timing part of the file itself.

For separately controlled scenes

Place the relevant media in separate scenes and select Fade under OBS’s Scene Transitions, then set a duration suited to the footage. You must switch between scenes, either yourself or through a separately configured automation mechanism. A scene fade does not automatically detect the end of each item in a VLC playlist.

OBS also documents show and hide transitions for animating a source’s visibility. Those are source animations, not documented VLC playlist item crossfades; see the DVE/Animating Sources Tutorial.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the new key. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. If the event is scheduled, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when it is ready.
  5. Check the YouTube watch page for picture and sound before leaving the setup unattended.

YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. Its encoder setup guide covers creating, scheduling, starting and ending a stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

End the stream and plan for long broadcasts

When the programme is finished, stop sending from OBS and end the stream in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; for a longer continuous broadcast, plan a restart or a new event rather than relying on an indefinite archive. The archive guidance is in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Do you need HLS?

Usually not for this workflow. Ordinary prerecorded looping through OBS does not itself require HLS; use the protocol supported by your encoder and stream settings. YouTube describes HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with higher latency than RTMP and additional segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Check its HLS setup guide if you have a specific HDR or codec requirement.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The file stops at the end. For one file, check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on VLC Video.
  • VLC Video is unavailable or will not play the playlist. Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist changes clips without fading. This is not evidence of a faulty loop setting: OBS documents VLC playlist looping, not automatic playlist crossfades. Render the transitions into one file or switch between separately configured scenes.
  • The scheduled stream has no preview. Confirm OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and check Live Control Room. If live streaming is newly enabled, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The stream key may have been shared. Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS before streaming again.
  • The video is live but audio is missing or wrong. Check the source’s audio in OBS’s mixer and verify it in the YouTube preview or watch page before leaving the stream running.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded programme to keep looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
