If FFmpeg reports RTMP handshake failed while connecting to YouTube, check the active YouTube server URL and stream key first, then verify that the URL scheme, FFmpeg build, and network route match the selected endpoint. A handshake error marks a connection-setup problem; by itself, it does not identify the cause. Changing bitrate or resolution is not a general handshake fix.
Fix the connection in this order
- Copy the active server URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the settings for the stream you are configuring and copy its stream URL and stream key into FFmpeg’s output configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions use both values. Don’t share the key in a command example, screenshot, or log; redact it before asking for help.
- Match the URL scheme to the endpoint. If you selected YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, use the supplied
rtmps://URL; don’t change it tortmp://, or vice versa. YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and states: “Both the protocol and the server should bertmps, not justrtmp.” See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS as distinct protocol variants. - If the error mentions SSL, verify the RTMPS URL and port. Use the actual URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube suggests specifying port
443for certain SSL errors. Do not treat an example host from documentation as a universal ingestion address. - If the connection times out, check support and reachability. YouTube’s timeout guidance says to verify the server URL and notes that the encoder may not support RTMPS. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol and that firewall or proxy rules permit a connection to the selected destination and port.
- Read the full connection log before changing other settings. Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration, then inspect messages immediately before and after the handshake error. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP URL components and options; exact options can depend on the installed version and build. The FFmpeg source includes a handshake-completion state, but the error text alone does not reveal which part failed.
These checks target the connection stage. If the handshake succeeds and the stream then fails or looks unhealthy, investigate that later stage separately rather than assuming the original connection error explains it.
RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS: choose the matching ingestion method
| Method | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | When the YouTube stream setup and encoder use the RTMP endpoint. | Use the matching rtmp:// server URL and confirm the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. |
| RTMPS | When using YouTube’s encrypted RTMP-over-TLS/SSL ingestion endpoint. | Use the RTMPS server URL supplied for the stream, matching rtmps:// scheme, and confirm encoder/build support. For certain SSL errors, YouTube suggests port 443. |
| HLS | For supported workflows that need capabilities unavailable through the encoder’s RTMP path. | HLS needs a compatible encoder setup and the corresponding YouTube stream configuration. It is a separate ingestion option, not a universal fix for an RTMP handshake failure. |
YouTube discusses HLS and encoder settings in its live encoder guidance. Switch to HLS only if the workflow supports it and you configure the corresponding YouTube ingestion method.
Common causes—and what the message does not prove
- Wrong or stale server URL or stream key: retrieve the current values from the Live Control Room settings for the stream being configured.
- Protocol mismatch: the URL scheme and selected YouTube endpoint do not agree—for example, using an RTMP URL for an RTMPS connection.
- Unsupported RTMPS: the installed encoder or FFmpeg build may not support the protocol selected.
- TLS, port, or route problem: an SSL error or timeout can warrant checking the RTMPS URL, applicable port, and network access to the destination.
The message alone cannot distinguish among these possibilities. The official materials do not establish bitrate, resolution, or codec changes as generic handshake fixes, so leave those encoding parameters alone while diagnosing connection setup.

Example FFmpeg output setup
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows RTMP-family output using a URL and stream name. Treat the following as a shape, not a ready-to-run YouTube command: replace the placeholders with the active endpoint and key shown in Live Control Room, and confirm the syntax against your FFmpeg version.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "rtmp://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
For an RTMPS stream, use the RTMPS server URL supplied in YouTube settings, with its matching scheme. Do not paste a real stream key into public logs or documentation. This example illustrates URL configuration only; it does not prescribe encoder settings or diagnose a handshake failure.

After the handshake: separate connection faults from stream health
A successful connection does not guarantee that the stream will remain healthy or that its encoding settings are appropriate. First establish that FFmpeg reaches YouTube; then, if the stream starts but has a different problem, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the relevant workflow. Do not use encoding changes as a substitute for fixing a URL, protocol, TLS, or reachability mismatch.
