Short answer: Wowza’s 2021 support discussions used “10 concurrent channels” to mean up to 10 incoming streams being transcoded at the same time on a Wowza Streaming Engine instance—not 10 YouTube channels. That historical figure does not establish the limit on your current license or the number of YouTube destinations it permits. YouTube treats its own stream resources separately: its API guidance says to create a distinct stream for each YouTube channel. Check your current Wowza contract and configure a separate YouTube stream resource for each destination.
What “channel” meant in Wowza’s 2021 license discussions
In a May 2021 Wowza Community thread about pricing, Wowza staff clarified that the discussed “10 concurrent channels” referred to incoming source streams being processed by the Transcoder simultaneously. The answer distinguished those transcoded inputs from outgoing connections to viewers or stream targets, and from the number of applications. A separate July 2021 support discussion described an “instance” as one copy of Wowza Streaming Engine server software running on a computer. In that context, the figure was 10 simultaneous transcoded incoming streams per instance—not 10 YouTube channels. May 2021 Wowza Community discussion; July 2021 clarification.
Those are historical explanations for plans being discussed in 2021. They do not verify an entitlement for every current Wowza license, version, or contract. Do not use “10” as a current capacity guarantee or as a count of permitted YouTube destinations.
Transcoding versus passthrough
The same historical support guidance described transcoding as changing stream properties such as protocol, codec, bitrate, or resolution. It distinguished that work from passing through or repackaging a stream without changing it. The thread also gave RTMP-to-WebRTC delivery as an example that could require audio transcoding. Whether a particular configuration counts as transcoding depends on what it actually changes; confirm the treatment for your current product and plan with Wowza.

How YouTube counts streams and broadcasts
YouTube’s Live Streaming API separates a broadcast—the event represented by a YouTube video—from a live stream, the incoming audio-video feed. Its documentation says each broadcast is associated with exactly one stream. For an operator using multiple YouTube channels with one encoder, YouTube says to create a different stream for each channel. Within a channel, a stream can be reused across broadcasts, including simultaneous broadcasts in the documented use case. YouTube API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams; YouTube API: LiveStreams.
This is a YouTube-side requirement, not proof of a Wowza one-output-per-channel licensing rule. For each YouTube destination, plan on its own YouTube stream resource and credentials. Separately confirm how your Wowza license and Stream Targets setup treat multiple outbound destinations.

Set stream properties for each YouTube resource
YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide says ingestion type, frame rate, and resolution are set when a stream is created and cannot be changed afterward. Choose those settings deliberately for each channel’s stream resource, and verify that the encoder output matches them. YouTube API: Life of a Broadcast.
How to estimate capacity without mixing the two systems
- Count incoming source feeds. Determine how many sources Wowza will receive at once, and which ones require transcoding rather than unmodified passthrough.
- Count the Engine instances that will do that work. The historical support explanation treated the transcoding count as simultaneous and per instance. Do not assume adding an instance changes the terms or costs of your current license.
- Count YouTube destinations separately. For each channel, create the distinct YouTube stream resource required by the API guidance; document the stream key or credentials used for that destination.
- Check outbound target terms. Ask Wowza how your specific license, version, and Stream Targets configuration limit or charge for destinations, instances, and any overages. A count of transcoded inputs does not answer those questions.
- Confirm the answer in your account terms. Wowza support directed plan and account questions to sales or customer support. The 2021 discussion is not a substitute for confirmation against your current contract. See the Wowza Community discussion about the Basic Plan.
Questions to put to Wowza before deployment
- What is the current concurrent-transcoding allowance for this exact license, and is it counted per Engine instance?
- How does Wowza classify the transformations in this workflow—such as codec, bitrate, resolution, or protocol changes—and does passthrough avoid the specific transcoding allowance?
- How many Engine instances and outbound Stream Targets are included, and what charges apply if the deployment needs more?
- Are there contract, version, or configuration conditions that change the answer for multiple YouTube destinations?
