Google specifically lists transfer from a VM to YouTube among named Google-product destinations with no charge; that rule does not mean every kind of traffic in a streaming setup is free. What goes into a Compute Engine streaming estimate?
Use this structure rather than a universal monthly figure:
Estimated total = VM charges + disk charges + applicable network transfer charges.
These are separate categories in Google Cloud pricing. Compute Engine VM prices do not include disk, images, or networking, and disk and network charges are documented separately. The final amount also depends on billing currency, eligible discounts, and credits.

VM runtime
Choose the VM region and machine type, then estimate the billed hours. Include time the instance stays running outside the actual broadcast—for example, setup, testing, or downtime between scheduled streams. VM rates vary by configuration and location, so a monthly total cannot be calculated responsibly without those inputs.
Disk and images
Identify the disk type and provisioned capacity. Include any images or snapshots you want counted in the estimate; they are not included in the VM price. Google Cloud publishes separate disk and image pricing, so enter these as their own resources in the calculator.

Network transfer
Estimate outbound data volume and identify each destination. Google’s network pricing page names YouTube among Google-product destinations for which transfer from a VM is listed as no charge. Apply that narrowly to the VM-to-YouTube transfer rule: do not assume it covers traffic to other internet destinations, other Google services, or every component in a larger architecture. Check the current network pricing page for the applicable destination and traffic category.
How to calculate your own workload
- Choose the region and machine type. Record the VM location and exact machine family/type you plan to use.
- Estimate running hours. Count expected billed runtime, not just the time viewers see the stream. Include any hours the VM will remain on between broadcasts.
- Add storage resources. Enter disk type and provisioned size, plus images or snapshots if they are part of your workload.
- List traffic by destination. Estimate outbound volume separately for YouTube and any other destinations. Apply the no-charge rule only to the named VM-to-YouTube transfer category.
- Enter the configuration in Google’s calculator. Review the selected billing currency and any applicable discounts or credits. Google’s pricing overview displays USD, but your billing currency may differ.
- Review the line items and assumptions. Keep VM, disk, and applicable network charges visible as separate categories so a change in machine, runtime, capacity, or destination is reflected in the right part of the estimate.
Google’s pricing documentation uses binary units for relevant Compute Engine quantities: 1 GiB = 230 bytes and 1 TiB = 240 bytes (1,024 GiB). Use the units shown by the pricing calculator rather than treating GiB as decimal GB.

Bandwidth limits are not bandwidth prices
A VM’s maximum egress bandwidth describes a capacity limit, not a per-gigabyte charge. Google’s bandwidth documentation describes limits by instance configuration, machine series, and destination, and says bandwidth is accounted for per VM rather than per vNIC or IP address. Use those limits to assess whether the VM can sustain the intended stream; use network pricing separately to determine whether a particular transfer is chargeable.
For a streaming configuration, compare the VM’s documented capacity with the stream’s outbound bitrate and leave room for protocol overhead and other traffic. A machine’s bandwidth ceiling alone does not establish either a network bill or that a stream will perform reliably under every workload.

What to compare when evaluating configurations

There is no generally cheapest VM or disk option for this use without a defined region and workload. Compare the actual configurations in the pricing calculator rather than extrapolating one location’s or machine’s price to another.
