To stream through Wowza, create a YouTube live stream and copy its stream URL and key, configure the YouTube destination in the Wowza product you use, then test the full route in YouTube Live Control Room before going public. The setup differs between Wowza Streaming Engine and Wowza Video. For a Hindi music playlist, confirm you have the rights to rebroadcast every recording and composition; a playlist or stream key does not grant those rights.
Before you configure Wowza
Check YouTube live-stream eligibility
YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to go live. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting the encoder or Wowza connection. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for broadcasts that use overlays and production hardware. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance has the channel requirements.
Confirm music rights before airing the playlist
A YouTube playlist is a way to organize videos; its public availability does not establish permission to rebroadcast their sound recordings or the underlying compositions in a separate live stream. Before you air the playlist, establish that you have the necessary rights for each recording and composition, for the relevant territories and use. Do not assume that permission for another use, or the ability to play a track on YouTube, clears it for a live rebroadcast.
YouTube for Artists says channels must follow its policies, including copyright policies. If a Content ID claim has a valid basis to dispute, YouTube says it may be disputed in Studio. A copyright removal request is a legal process; YouTube’s guidance also advises considering applicable copyright exceptions. See YouTube for Artists’ resources and YouTube’s copyright removal guidance. If you are unsure whether your permissions cover the planned broadcast, resolve that question before going live.

Create the YouTube destination first
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Streaming page and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Enter the stream’s title, privacy, description, category and other details in YouTube Studio.
- Copy the generated stream URL and stream name/key for the Wowza configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your YouTube stream.
The YouTube destination is created in Studio; the URL and key are then entered in the relevant Wowza destination setup. The exact labels can change, so use the current YouTube and Wowza interfaces if a menu differs from the wording below.
Configure Wowza Streaming Engine
Use this route if your source is being ingested by a live application in Wowza Streaming Engine. Wowza’s guide, updated August 7, 2026, describes sending a live stream from Engine to YouTube for distributed delivery and adaptive-bitrate playback. Follow its Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube instructions alongside these steps.

- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application receiving your source.
- Open Stream Targets, add a target under third-party destinations, and select YouTube Live.
- Enter a unique target name, the incoming source stream name, and the YouTube application or destination details requested by the target configuration. Use the URL and key you saved from YouTube Studio.
- Start the H.264 camera or encoder that feeds the Wowza live application. The source must be running for Engine to send it onward to YouTube.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the incoming preview and stream health. Publish only after the preview and audio/video are correct.
Do not confuse this Engine workflow with Wowza Video’s external-service setup: Engine uses a Stream Targets destination, while Wowza Video uses an RTMP external service.
Configure Wowza Video
Use this separate workflow if you are using Wowza Video rather than managing a Streaming Engine application. Wowza’s article was updated February 24, 2025; because interface details may change, compare the labels with the current Wowza Video interface. - Create the YouTube stream in YouTube Studio and save its primary stream URL and key.
- In Wowza Video, select the stream output rendition and choose Add external service.
- Set Provider to RTMP, then enter YouTube’s primary URL and stream key. Wowza’s guide says to omit the
rtmp://prefix and the trailing slash from the primary URL. - If you use a backup URL, enter it in the same way. The backup URL is optional.
- Leave the target username and password blank, as directed by Wowza’s guide, then start the Wowza stream.
- Check playback in YouTube Live Control Room, including the preview and audio, before making the stream public.
In this Wowza Video workflow, Wowza says YouTube performs transcoding. That statement applies to this documented workflow and should not be confused with the separate Streaming Engine setup.
Test the complete route before making it public
- Confirm YouTube accepts the incoming stream and displays a preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that both picture and sound are present and that the intended playlist content is playing.
- Verify the stream’s title, description, category and privacy setting in YouTube Studio.
- Resolve any missing music permissions before publishing; successful technical delivery does not establish that a broadcast is authorized.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
