How to Stream Vertical Videos in a Continuous YouTube Live Playlist From a VPS

YouTube documents vertical RTMP(S) ingest, but not a turnkey VPS playlist loop. Learn the setup, credentials and tests to run before leaving a stream unattended.

You can send a vertical live feed from a VPS to YouTube through a third-party encoder using RTMP(S), but YouTube’s published setup instructions do not provide a turnkey method for continuously rotating prerecorded files. The platform connection is documented; making a playlist run continuously—including transitions, recovery and unattended operation—depends on the encoder and VPS configuration you choose and must be tested.

What YouTube supports—and what the VPS must do

YouTube supports vertical live viewing in its app, including discovery while browsing Shorts. For a third-party encoder, YouTube documents RTMP(S) output and a separate stream key for the vertical version when setting up a dual horizontal-and-vertical stream. Configure the vertical output before starting: YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream is already running. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes these options.

The VPS does not make a playlist continuous by itself. It must run an encoder that reads your video files, produces a live output in the format YouTube expects and sends that output to YouTube. You also need a method to sequence or loop the files and keep the process supervised. The official sources do not certify a specific file-rotation command, VPS size, service manager or gapless-playback recipe, so do not assume a particular configuration will run indefinitely without testing.

Choose how to create the vertical feed

Approach Vertical layout Encoder and keys What to consider
Live Control Room dual-stream handling YouTube says the vertical output is a center crop by default unless you choose another layout. YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in horizontal and vertical formats by default. Check the crop against the important parts of each video before relying on it.
Third-party encoder dual output You control the portrait output in the encoder workflow. Choose RTMP(S) and use the separate vertical stream key for the vertical output; send the intended content to the appropriate key. Manage the encoder process and configure the vertical output before starting the broadcast.

The vertical viewing experience is not identical for every viewer. YouTube says vertical live streams appear in the app’s vertical live experience, but that experience is not currently available on tablets; scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical feed. See YouTube’s guide to watching vertical live streams.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare the YouTube stream and credentials

  1. Set up or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the vertical and horizontal handling that matches your workflow. If using the third-party encoder route, configure RTMP(S) and the vertical output before you start.
  2. Get the server URL and stream key from YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses these values to connect the encoder. The LiveStreams API documentation describes the incoming feed’s ingestion address and stream name.
  3. Enter the values in the encoder running on the VPS. Use placeholders in scripts or examples, not a real key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in screenshots, repositories or logs.
  4. For RTMPS, use YouTube’s secure endpoint as provided. YouTube’s technical guidance specifies port 443 and the correct server hostname for SNI authentication. Do not substitute an endpoint or hostname based on guesswork; follow YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
  5. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow includes checking that the preview appears in Live Control Room and then selecting Go live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build and validate the prerecorded playlist

FFmpeg is a general-purpose media converter with extensive input, filter and output options. Its documentation does not, by itself, establish a ready-to-use continuous YouTube playlist configuration. A source-file playlist and YouTube’s HLS ingest playlist are different things: HLS ingest describes media segments sent by an encoder and a playlist describing their order, not a turnkey way to rotate prerecorded source videos. YouTube documents RTMP(S) for the third-party dual vertical/horizontal workflow; its HLS ingest requirements are described separately in the HLS delivery guide. FFmpeg’s reference is at FFmpeg Documentation.

Before leaving the VPS unattended, validate the whole chain with the actual videos, encoder and host you intend to use. These are practical checks, not a YouTube-certified recipe:

  • Confirm the output is portrait and that framing keeps titles, faces and other essential content inside the visible area.
  • Listen across file boundaries for silence, abrupt cuts, mismatched loudness or missing audio; watch for black frames or unintended gaps.
  • Confirm the playlist advances and loops as intended after the final file.
  • Test what happens if the encoder process exits, the VPS restarts or the network connection drops. A playlist loop and a process-restart policy are separate concerns.
  • Observe CPU use and outbound bandwidth during an extended test. The sources reviewed do not establish a minimum VPS specification or bandwidth requirement.
  • Check the YouTube preview and a viewer-facing channel or watch page on the devices your audience uses.

Check the stream before leaving it unattended

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream in advance, starting the encoder ahead of the event and checking the Live Control Room preview before going live. Its published tips also recommend testing backup-encoder failover when used, confirming that local archive files are growing, checking viewer access through channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. These checks reduce avoidable surprises; they are not a guarantee of indefinite operation. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Verify that the encoder has the current server URL and key, that it is sending to the intended horizontal or vertical key, and that the VPS can connect to the chosen RTMP(S) endpoint. For RTMPS, check port 443 and hostname/SNI configuration against YouTube’s requirements.
The stream is live but the portrait framing is wrong Inspect the selected vertical layout. A center crop can cut off content near the sides of a landscape source; adjust the layout or provide portrait-framed source content, then check the preview again.
The playlist stops at a file boundary Check the encoder’s file-sequencing and looping configuration, then test the transition between the specific files. YouTube’s setup documentation does not prescribe a source-file rotation method.
The encoder disconnects or the broadcast stops Check VPS connectivity and encoder logs without exposing the stream key. Test reconnection and process restart behavior separately; do not treat YouTube’s automatic handling of a dropped connection as proof that a VPS process will restart.
Viewers cannot find the vertical version in the expected place Confirm the stream was configured for vertical before launch and check the viewer’s device and stream type. The vertical feed is an app experience; scheduled streams and Premieres are excluded from that feed, and tablets do not currently have the vertical live experience.
