How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Livestream With Prerecorded Videos on Google Cloud Run

A continuous YouTube feed needs more than a long-running HTTP request. Learn how to choose a Cloud Run resource, prepare media and secrets, match YouTube settings, and plan for restarts and cost.

To run a 24/7 YouTube livestream with prerecorded videos on Google Cloud Run, build a restartable publisher that reads media from durable cloud storage and sends an RTMP or RTMPS feed to YouTube. Do not keep one Cloud Run service request open as the stream: its request timeout tops out at 60 minutes. Start by evaluating a Cloud Run worker pool or long-lived instance for the publisher, and use a service, if needed, for start, stop, status, or configuration.

Choose a Cloud Run resource that can suit continuous publishing

Cloud Run has different resource types for different lifetimes. Google describes worker pools as suited to always-on background work and instances as suitable for long-lived singleton workloads. A job runs a task to completion; a service handles HTTP requests. This makes a worker pool or a long-lived instance the most relevant Cloud Run starting point for a continuously publishing process, subject to current availability and limits in your chosen region.

A service can still be useful as a control plane: an HTTP interface can request a start or stop, report status, or update configuration. Keep that separate from the process responsible for maintaining the YouTube feed.

Approach Fit for a continuous publisher Important consideration
1. StreamNeo Cloud alternative for playing uploaded videos on YouTube Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Cloud Run worker pool Strong Cloud Run starting point for background publishing Google identifies worker pools with always-on background workloads. Check regional availability, quotas, pricing, and current scaling behavior.
Cloud Run instance Potential fit for a long-lived singleton process Confirm availability and the current operational contract for the intended use.
Cloud Run job Better suited to finite processing than permanent publishing A job runs to completion. Relaunching it on a schedule can create gaps and requires coordination of desired stream state and playback position.
Cloud Run service request Poor fit as the lifetime of a 24/7 publishing session Requests time out; keep a service for control or status functions rather than one never-ending stream request.

Understand why a service request cannot be the stream

Google Cloud’s request-timeout documentation, last updated September 30, 2026, gives Cloud Run services a default request timeout of five minutes (300 seconds) and a maximum of 60 minutes (3,600 seconds). When a request exceeds its timeout, the connection closes and the service returns a 504 response. Google recommends retries and resilience to reconnections for requests longer than 15 minutes; clients are not guaranteed to reconnect to the same instance. A 24/7 stream needs a publisher process whose lifecycle is not tied to one HTTP request.

Billing mode does not make a service instance permanent. Request-based billing allocates CPU while requests are being processed. Instance-based billing allocates CPU through the instance lifecycle, but autoscaling can still stop instances. Minimum instances can keep selected instances active, and Google documents a 10-second grace period after SIGTERM before a terminating instance is stopped. Design for termination and recovery instead of assuming a container will remain alive indefinitely.

Prepare YouTube and protect the stream key

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Resolve eligibility before building around a planned broadcast.
  2. Create or configure the live destination. In YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its ingest server URL and stream key. YouTube supports software encoders.
  3. Store the key as a secret. Inject it into the publisher through a secret-management mechanism. Do not bake it into the container image, commit it to a repository, or print it in logs. Rotate it if it is exposed.
  4. Match the destination and encoder. Configure the publisher with the exact ingest server and key associated with the intended YouTube stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before announcing the broadcast.

Keep videos and playback state outside the container

Put source videos and playlist metadata in durable object storage, not only on the container’s local filesystem. A container can be replaced after maintenance, a crash, deployment, or scaling event; its local files are not a reliable canonical media library.

Build the publisher to read one selected asset or advance through a playlist, then either encode the media or copy compatible streams into the live output. Keep desired running state and, where needed, playlist position outside the container so a replacement process can resume predictably. Decide what the scheduler should do if an asset is missing, corrupt, or still uploading.

Treat both media reads and the outbound YouTube connection as recoverable. A single long-lived storage download or upload connection is not a recovery plan: reopen media and reconnect after transient failures, use bounded retries with backoff, and log enough detail to diagnose repeated failures. The exact playlist application and FFmpeg invocation depend on the media and deployment choices; verify commands and flags against the chosen encoder and current product limits rather than treating a generic command as production-ready.

Configure output for YouTube Live

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the official YouTube encoder settings table for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec you select; bitrate recommendations vary by those settings.

A common 1080p30 H.264 profile

For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These are YouTube’s published settings for that profile, not a deployment-specific measurement. Do not apply that bitrate to a different resolution, frame rate, or ingest codec without checking the relevant table entry.

Transport, audio, and preview

  • Prefer RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.
  • Use a supported audio codec and verify that the finished feed has audible, synchronized audio.
  • Match the configured frame rate and output profile to the chosen YouTube stream.
  • Start early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview and correct video, audio, or ingest problems before the intended start.

Deploy a supervised, observable publisher

  1. Package the workload. Build a container image containing the selected encoder and a small supervisor or entrypoint. The supervisor should report health, restart the encoder when appropriate, and exit clearly for unrecoverable configuration errors.
  2. Choose the Cloud Run resource and region. Evaluate a worker pool or long-lived instance for publishing. Before committing, verify regional availability, quotas, scaling and termination behavior, and the current limits for the selected resource.
  3. Provide secrets and permissions. Grant only the permissions needed to read the media, retrieve the stream key, and emit operational logs. Confirm that the runtime can access those resources without exposing credentials.
  4. Size CPU by measurement. Google documents configurable service CPU up to eight vCPUs, but the appropriate CPU allocation depends on resolution, codec, and whether the workload encodes or copies compatible streams. Measure utilization with the actual workload rather than assuming one CPU setting fits every profile.
  5. Externalize recoverable state. Store desired running state and playlist progress somewhere the replacement publisher can read. Make restarts resume deliberately rather than depending on the previous container’s local state.
  6. Set alerts and useful logs. Track process exits, failed reconnects, prolonged periods without output, and rising error counts. Log connection attempts and recovery outcomes without logging the stream key.

Google Cloud’s troubleshooting guidance notes that outbound connections can reset during infrastructure updates. Recreate long-lived connections when they fail; do not assume a previously opened connection will remain healthy.

Test the stream and its recovery before relying on it

  1. Start the publisher before the planned broadcast and inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound.
  2. Check logs and alerts for encoder exits, media-read failures, reconnect loops, and a lack of output.
  3. Exercise the recovery path in a controlled test: confirm the supervisor restarts the encoder, reopens the asset, and reconnects to YouTube after a transient failure.
  4. If you use a backup encoder, test its handoff separately. YouTube recommends testing in advance and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

For YouTube’s local-network scenario with primary and backup streams, its streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom above their combined bitrate. That is guidance for the stated local streaming network setup, not a formula for sizing Cloud Run egress.

Troubleshoot common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The service returns 504 or the feed stops after a period The publishing session is bound to a service request that timed out. Move the continuous publisher to a suitable long-lived resource; retain the service, if needed, for control or status endpoints.
The container stops unexpectedly Autoscaling, maintenance, a crash, or deployment replaced the instance. Handle SIGTERM, make the process restartable, and restore desired stream state and playlist position externally. Do not assume the documented 10-second shutdown grace period is enough to finish a long task.
The encoder cannot connect or reconnect Wrong ingest URL or key, transient network interruption, or a stale connection. Check the destination’s exact URL and key, retrieve the secret securely, and ensure the supervisor recreates failed outbound connections with bounded retries and backoff.
YouTube receives a feed but the preview is wrong or unstable Unsupported or mismatched output settings, audio configuration, or bitrate. Compare codec, constant bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with the current YouTube guidance for the selected profile; inspect the Live Control Room preview.
Playback fails partway through or does not resume correctly Missing or corrupt asset, interrupted storage read, or state kept only in the container. Validate playlist assets, define behavior for unavailable media, reopen reads after transient failures, and externalize playlist progress if resumption is required.
The workload cannot sustain its chosen encode Insufficient CPU for the selected resolution, codec, or encoding complexity. Measure CPU use with the real workload and adjust resource sizing; consider copying compatible streams instead of encoding where appropriate.

Estimate cost from the deployment, not a generic monthly figure

There is no single deployment-independent Cloud Run price for a continuous livestream. Estimate using the selected resource’s current pricing and your region, CPU and memory configuration, active duration, storage use, network egress, and any availability requirements. Instance-based billing charges for the running instance lifecycle; account for storage and network egress separately. Use Google’s current pricing calculator and validate quotas and resource availability for the target region before settling on an architecture.
