How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream of Ocean Sounds from a Mac mini

A practical Mac mini and encoder workflow for 24/7 ocean-sounds livestreaming, with YouTube setup, bitrate guidance, copyright checks, and archive caveats.

You can use a Mac mini and an encoder such as OBS to send a prepared ocean-sounds feed to YouTube Live. The key steps are to enable live streaming for your channel, configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, test the feed, and monitor it. A continuous broadcast has an important limitation: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so plan a separate local recording if you need a replay.

What you need—and what a Mac mini does not guarantee

This setup is for a prepared feed: an ocean recording plus a visual, such as a still image or video, sent through an encoder. YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, and OBS is among the encoders that can use YouTube HLS ingestion. YouTube’s guidance does not provide a Mac mini-specific 24/7 recipe or establish that any particular Mac mini will run indefinitely without intervention. Your exact Mac mini model, macOS version, OBS build, and power settings matter, so test the equipment you intend to use rather than assuming compatibility or uninterrupted operation.

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream.
  • A Mac mini running an encoder configured to send your prepared audio and visual feed.
  • A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen settings.
  • An ocean recording and visual you have the rights to use for a livestream and, if relevant, its replay.

Enable YouTube Live before launch

  1. Check that your channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the last 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until launch day. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or manage an encoder stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder setup guidance: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, show it in a screen capture, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.

Choose a protocol and sustainable video settings

RTMPS or HLS

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and HLS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS can support workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP, and YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because video is delivered in segments. For a static ambient stream, ultra-low latency is usually not the main requirement; choose a protocol supported by your encoder and matching the features you need. If you use OBS with HLS ingestion, select HLS in YouTube’s Live Control Room and follow the HLS-specific requirements. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions · YouTube: HLS ingestion.

1080p30 or 720p30

For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. Test upload capacity and leave headroom for network variation. A 1080p image can preserve more visual detail; 720p needs less upload bandwidth. If your ocean visual is static, choosing 720p may be a reasonable bandwidth tradeoff, but the right choice depends on the source material and your connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for other settings, and verify stream health during testing rather than guessing at unsupported values.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Connect the encoder and test the feed

  1. In your encoder, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key for the stream you created in the Live Control Room.
  2. Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to settings your connection can sustain. For the H.264 examples above, use YouTube’s recommendations as starting points, not as proof of connection capacity.
  3. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check that both the ocean audio and visual are present and that the preview is stable before going live.
  4. Run a preflight test. YouTube recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health and messages. Check that the event is accessible from your channel and watch pages and on mobile devices; listen for clear, continuous audio and confirm the visual behaves as intended.
  5. If you are making a local recording, check that the archive file is growing. Decide how you will segment, store, and verify recordings before relying on them for a long broadcast.
  6. When the test is satisfactory, start the live event from the Live Control Room. Keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health messages; these checks reduce avoidable problems but do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. YouTube encoder tips and settings.

Plan for archives and DVR limits

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable YouTube replay. If you need recordings, make local recordings and plan how to split and store them; YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. YouTube: Archive live streams · YouTube: DVR on live streams.

Clear the rights for the ocean recording

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies a match, YouTube may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; if it continues, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. A strike can also end a stream. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; without that, a stream may be interrupted even when you hold a license. The rights and Content ID status of your intended ocean recording are not established here. Use audio you created or obtain permission that covers livestreaming, the territories where viewers may watch, monetization if applicable, and any archive you plan to keep. For licensed content, confirm Content ID handling with the rights holder before going live. YouTube channel eligibility for monetization and any earnings are separate questions; this setup alone establishes neither.

Troubleshoot common launch problems

You cannot start a live stream

Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.

The Live Control Room shows no preview

Confirm that the encoder is running and that you copied the server URL and stream key for the intended event. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream-health messages; do not expose the key while troubleshooting.

The picture or audio is unstable

Compare the selected bitrate with the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test, try a lower-bandwidth resolution such as 720p30 if it suits your visual, and test again before launch. Listen to the preview for dropouts and confirm that the local recording, if used, is being written.

The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright warning

Stop using the flagged material and review its rights. If it is licensed third-party audio, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist; a license by itself may not prevent automated interruption.

The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete

Do not assume a 24/7 stream will be archived: broadcasts exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind can be limited. Use and verify a local recording when a replay matters.
