Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose OBS if you want to build and manage the stream in a graphical desktop interface; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring a command and supervising a background process. Both can send a prerecorded relaxation program to YouTube from one PC, but neither makes the broadcast failure-proof: the computer, power, internet connection, source media and YouTube ingest all have to keep working.
OBS vs. FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube stream on one PC: what is the real difference?
The choice is mainly about how you prefer to operate and recover the stream, not a proven difference in performance. OBS gives you visual control over scenes, sources and settings. FFmpeg lets you specify media inputs and encoding in a command, which can run in the background and be restarted by a process supervisor if it exits.
There is no controlled same-PC comparison establishing that one uses less CPU or stays live longer. Treat the distinctions below as workflow guidance, not benchmark results.
| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you operate it | Graphical desktop interface; manage sources, scenes and settings visually. | Command line; declare inputs, filters, codecs and output options. |
| Best fit | You want hands-on visual scene management and can keep the desktop session and OBS running. | You can maintain a command, interpret logs and configure process supervision. |
| Recovery approach | Auto-reconnect can help with brief network hiccups, but should not be treated as recovery from every application or PC failure. | A supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits; a restart alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. |
| Trade-off | Straightforward to inspect and adjust, but the desktop workflow remains part of the operation. | Automatable and scriptable, but errors in the command or media path require command-line troubleshooting. |
What a YouTube 24/7 stream consists of
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the event or video viewers watch—from a stream, which carries audio-video data and settings to YouTube. Its API documentation uses a 24/7 feed as an example: a continuing feed can be associated with separate broadcasts. This distinction is useful when planning a persistent channel feed rather than treating the encoder process as the whole YouTube event. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide.

For the setup below, the encoder reads prerecorded video and audio available on the PC and sends the encoded output to YouTube using a stream key. The key is a credential: keep it private, and do not put it in a public script, screenshot or log.
Check YouTube’s ingest requirements before choosing settings
OBS and FFmpeg both have to deliver a stream YouTube can ingest. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check the live encoder page again when configuring a new setup because platform guidance can change.

Published H.264 bitrate examples
| Output format | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are figures in YouTube’s encoder guidance, not independent measurements, a promise of smooth playback, or a claim that every relaxation stream needs 1080p. Pick a resolution and bitrate your actual connection can sustain, leaving capacity for normal household or workplace traffic. Test upload speed, but also test the intended stream: a speed test alone cannot show how the encoder, media and connection behave together.
Keyframes, audio and rate control
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting; do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Choose a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Verify the selected encoder options against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Match the configured bitrate to the chosen resolution and to a stable upload connection, rather than selecting the highest available setting by default.
Set up the single-PC workflow
The exact labels vary with software versions and operating systems. In either case, have the media files available locally, create or select the YouTube live broadcast, and copy its stream key into the encoder’s private stream configuration. Do not expose that key; if it is disclosed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live control room.

Option A: OBS for a visual workflow
- Install and open OBS on the PC that will remain responsible for the stream. Confirm the computer can play the intended media while encoding and that its power and network connection are stable.
- Create a scene and add the prerecorded visual source and audio source. Arrange and preview them, checking that the picture does not go blank and that the audio is audible and not clipped.
- Open OBS stream settings and configure YouTube as the service. Enter the stream key privately, then select the server/connection option appropriate to the YouTube setup. Use RTMPS when the available configuration supports it.
- Set output resolution, frame rate and encoder options. For H.264, use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and a bitrate appropriate to the connection and resolution; check YouTube’s published table rather than assuming a relaxation stream needs the maximum quality.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before a public launch. Play representative sections, including the most visually active part and the loudest audio, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- When the test is stable, start the intended broadcast and keep OBS, the desktop session and the source media available. Monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that a running OBS window guarantees a healthy YouTube stream.
Option B: FFmpeg for a command-line workflow
- Install an FFmpeg build appropriate for the PC’s operating system and confirm the input video and audio files can be read. Keep the files in a stable location and avoid relying on removable media that may disconnect.
- Construct a command that reads the intended video and audio, loops or sequences them as needed, encodes video and audio using settings supported by YouTube, and sends the result to the RTMP or RTMPS ingest address with the stream key.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, select a bitrate supported by the chosen resolution and upload connection, and use a supported codec. The precise FFmpeg options depend on the build, input format and whether audio is embedded or separate; verify them against the installed FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
- Run the command interactively first. Check its output for input errors, missing files, encoder failures or connection problems, then confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Only after a representative test, configure a service manager or restart loop to relaunch FFmpeg if its process exits. Keep logs accessible and monitor YouTube separately: a process that is running or repeatedly restarting is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes protocol behavior; it does not promise uninterrupted operation. A third-party guide from RadioTech Studio, published May 29, 2026, gives OBS and FFmpeg workflow examples for radio/visual streams, including restart advice. Its examples are implementation guidance, not official YouTube instructions or a controlled comparison; adapt them to the files, settings and connection you actually use.
Test and monitor the stream before leaving it unattended
- Use the intended audio and video, including sections with movement or changing scenes; a still frame and silence do not represent the real workload.
- Check the PC’s upload capacity and choose a conservative starting resolution and bitrate that the connection sustains.
- Start a test and inspect YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Look for unstable ingest, missing audio, a black or frozen picture, and warnings about the incoming format.
- Keep the test running long enough to catch issues that do not appear immediately. Confirm the local files remain accessible and that the encoder does not stop at a track boundary or when a playlist item changes.
- For a longer run, arrange a way to notice an encoder exit or YouTube ingest failure. A restart supervisor can respond to a process exit, but cannot repair every network, power, media or platform problem.
A single-PC setup has one machine as a point of failure. Both options rely on that computer, its power and connectivity, and the source media remaining available. No configuration choice removes those dependencies.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Stream key, ingest address, network or encoder output configuration. | Check that the key and destination are correct and private, confirm the encoder is actually sending, and review its status or logs alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Stream health is unstable or drops | Upload capacity or connection stability; the configured bitrate may exceed what the uplink can sustain. | Test upload under representative conditions, lower the bitrate or resolution, and retest. YouTube advises matching quality to a reliable connection. |
| Video is black, frozen or wrong | Source path, media playback, looping configuration or OBS scene/source selection. | Preview the actual media, confirm files remain available, check the selected source and test transitions or loop points before relaunching. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | Wrong input or track, unsupported output configuration, muted source or excessive level. | Check the source and output audio selection, inspect levels, and test the loudest representative segment while monitoring YouTube’s incoming stream. |
| FFmpeg exits and restarts repeatedly | Invalid command options, unavailable media, encoder failure or connection error. | Read the process log and fix the first underlying error before relying on a restart policy; repeated relaunches can repeat the same failure. |
| OBS or FFmpeg runs, but the broadcast is not healthy | The local encoder process is not the same as confirmed YouTube ingest. | Check YouTube’s live control room and stream-health messages, then investigate the connection, stream key and incoming format. |

Copyright and YouTube policy checks for relaxation streams
Before streaming prerecorded music, ambience or video, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the content and for its use in a live broadcast. A loop does not make copyrighted material safe to use. Also consider whether the finished channel offers meaningful original value: repeating material can raise separate monetization and reused-content concerns. Copyright clearance and eligibility for monetization are different questions; check YouTube’s current policies for your situation rather than assuming that permission alone guarantees monetization.
