For a quiet whisper ASMR stream, start with a clean microphone signal, add Noise Suppression only if steady room noise is audible, use an Expander gently to soften noise between phrases, control louder peaks with a Compressor, and place a Limiter last. There is no OBS-published whisper preset or YouTube loudness target: tune the filters to your microphone and room, then record or test privately before committing to a continuous stream.
Build a conservative filter chain
OBS documents what each filter does and gives general settings guidance, but not a preset validated for whisper ASMR. Start with as few filters as your recording needs. Add one at a time, then listen again to speech and silence.

Set the microphone level at its source
Adjust the microphone or interface level first where possible. OBS says gain should generally be applied before audio reaches OBS. If the signal is still too quiet, add a Gain filter in OBS and raise it only as much as needed. See the OBS Gain Filter guide.

Add Noise Suppression only for mild, steady noise
Use it for a persistent low-level sound such as a fan or white noise, not as a fix for a loud room. OBS documents RNNoise, Speex, and NVIDIA Noise Removal when the Broadcast SDK redistributable is installed. RNNoise is higher quality but uses more CPU; Speex is configurable. Strong suppression can distort speech, so listen for unnatural consonants or a softened whisper. See the OBS Noise Suppression Filter guide.

Use an Expander to reduce noise between phrases
An Expander attenuates sound below its threshold. OBS recommends RMS detection and gives 5–10 ms attack, 50–120 ms release, and a 4:1 ratio as general starting guidance—not whisper settings. Keep the threshold low enough that quiet words and the first syllable of each phrase still open naturally. OBS notes that an Expander can open and close more smoothly than a Noise Gate, whose ratio is fixed. See the OBS Expander Filter guide.

Place a Compressor near the beginning for louder peaks
A Compressor reduces louder sounds and can help keep vocal peaks from clipping. OBS typically places it at or near the beginning of the chain. Too much compression can change the natural dynamics of a whisper; the documented defaults are controls, not an ASMR recipe. See the OBS Compressor Filter guide.

Put the Limiter last
A Limiter caps peaks above its threshold. OBS says it should be the last filter in the chain; its documented default threshold is −6 dB. That is a filter default, not a recommended YouTube loudness target. See the OBS Limiter Filter guide.
OBS supports the general placement of a Compressor near the start, an Expander after compression or other effects, and a Limiter last. Noise Suppression is optional: include it only when the noise warrants it. For filter descriptions and setup context, consult the OBS Filters Guide.

Choose filters by the problem you hear

Tune and test without sacrificing the whisper
- Make one filter change at a time, then listen to both spoken phrases and the quiet between them.
- Check that the first syllable of a whisper remains audible, consonants sound natural, and level changes do not audibly pump.
- Record a sample or test the stream privately before a continuous session. OBS’s Studio Overview Guide recommends testing stream operation and configuration before the first stream.
These listening checks are practical ways to assess the documented filter behaviors, not OBS-published test results. Do not treat a filter’s threshold or default value as a universal loudness target.
