Start by checking which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection between your encoder and YouTube; Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag points to local computer load. Then compare those counters with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The remedy depends on which signal is failing—not simply on the fact that viewers see choppy video.
The troubleshooting guidance below applies in India as elsewhere. Your ISP, city, connection type, equipment and stream settings matter, but available official guidance does not establish a unique India-wide cause or special bitrate requirement.
First identify what “dropped frames” means
In OBS, open View → Stats and watch the counters while the problem occurs. Record the figures and the time, and save an OBS log covering the affected period. Also note any stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room.
| What rises or appears | What it points to | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Test upload stability, bitrate and the network path. |
| Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag | OBS cannot render frames in time, often because local GPU resources are constrained. | Reduce GPU work, simplify scenes or lower output demands. |
| Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag | The encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough for the selected settings. | Reduce encoder load, resolution or frame rate. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS counters remain stable | Playback buffering is not necessarily broadcaster-side frame loss. | Check viewer-side playback and YouTube health before changing encoder settings. |
| YouTube reports a configuration or ingest issue | The incoming stream may not match its configured codec, bitrate, frame rate or keyframe interval, or YouTube may not be receiving enough video. | Fix the specific health message and verify encoder settings. |
OBS distinguishes network connection trouble from rendering and encoding performance problems in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guides. Do not treat every report of choppy playback as an OBS network drop.

If OBS network drops are increasing
Measure upload performance when the fault happens
A plan’s advertised speed, or a download-speed result, does not establish that your upload can hold a live bitrate continuously. Test upload capacity and stability during the hours when the stream usually falters, and note the time, connection type and result. YouTube Help advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Use YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates as a starting point, not as proof that your particular route will sustain them all day.
Choose a bitrate and resolution your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026, provide these minimum and recommended bitrates:
| Output | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations for H.264, not guarantees about any ISP or connection. The appropriate figure depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. For an ambient loop, 30 fps may be sufficient if the source and desired motion look smooth at that rate; test the actual picture before settling on a lower setting.

In OBS, lower the configured video bitrate to a rate your upload can sustain reliably. If network drops continue, test a lower resolution as a separate change. Avoid changing several settings at once: a one-variable test makes it easier to tell whether the connection can now carry the stream.
Isolate the local network path
If you use Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. OBS says, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.” Use a known-good cable and, if practical, test a direct path to the router rather than relying on extenders or switches. A cable can help identify a local Wi-Fi or cable fault; buying one will not fix an ISP routing problem or a local encoding bottleneck.
OBS also lists modem/router hardware, network cards, switches, extenders and cables as possible causes. Temporarily test whether a VPN, security inspection, network-optimizer software or outdated network driver is interfering. Change one factor at a time, keep security protection in place except for a controlled test, and restore it afterward. Update or reconfigure only what the test identifies as a cause.

Escalate a connection problem with useful evidence
If local checks do not explain the drops, contact your ISP with timestamps, upload-test results, OBS logs and YouTube health messages. Describe whether the test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet and when the fault recurs. Congestion or routing changes beyond your home network may require the provider’s investigation. India is a reason to check your own local route and provider—not evidence that one ISP or a country-wide condition is responsible.
If rendering or encoding lag is increasing
Network purchases will not fix a local rendering or encoding bottleneck. OBS’s encoding performance guidance points to resource constraints, including GPU load. Try these changes one at a time:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Close applications that are consuming substantial CPU or GPU resources.
- Reduce unnecessary GPU work, scene complexity, filters and animated elements.
- Lower output resolution if the source and viewing needs allow it.
- Test 30 fps rather than 60 fps if the current frame rate cannot be maintained.
A largely static ambient image may be a good candidate for a lower frame rate, but check motion and the resulting stream rather than assuming it will look acceptable. Recheck OBS Stats after each change to confirm that the rendering or encoding counter—not just the network counter—improves.

Use YouTube’s stream-health message to fix ingest settings
YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists configuration issues involving high or low bitrate, codec, frame rate, GOP/keyframe length, primary-versus-backup stream mismatches and video ingestion starvation. The API describes the starvation message this way: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” A health warning is more useful when treated as a named fault than when several settings are changed blindly.
Compare the warning with the encoder’s actual output: resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP; its encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the stream configuration you selected in YouTube with what OBS is sending.
For a manually configured OBS stream key, use the key and server details shown in YouTube Live Control Room for that broadcast. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again. A stream-key mismatch is distinct from insufficient upload capacity, so confirm the destination and key when YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem.

Validate the fix before relying on a 24/7 loop
- Reproduce representative conditions. Test with audio and movement similar to the real ambient stream. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Change one likely cause. For example, test Ethernet, then adjust bitrate only if the evidence still points to network drops. For local lag, change scene load or output settings instead.
- Watch both systems. Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test; note any new warning and the time it appears.
- Keep a short incident record. Log the timestamp, OBS counters, YouTube messages, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval and whether the connection was wired or wireless.
- Confirm the stream remains healthy. A brief successful test does not prove a connection will remain stable throughout a recurring 24/7 run. Compare the record across the hours when failures have occurred.
India-specific checks: investigate your connection, not a national stereotype
For an Indian channel, record the city or locality, ISP, connection type and the hours when the problem occurs. Ask the provider to check the specific upload route and timestamps if local equipment tests pass. The official platform and OBS guidance is not an India-specific ISP comparison, and it does not establish a special bitrate for Indian streams. Without your logs, connection details and YouTube health messages, the individual cause cannot be named reliably.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is keeping a local computer and connection running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to a YouTube channel. It does not repair the route from your home ISP to YouTube, so it is not a guaranteed fix for a connection fault. The practical difference is that playback runs in the cloud, not on a computer at home.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Copyright and long-running stream checks
Before looping an ambient recording, make sure you have the rights to its video and audio. A stream being live or continuously available does not itself establish permission to use music, footage or other protected material. Check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules for the content you intend to use, and keep documentation of licenses or permissions.
Long streams also need an archive plan. Google’s older Full Live Production guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and streams longer than 12 hours should be recorded by the team for manual upload. Because that guidance is older and is not a complete 24/7 continuity policy, confirm current behavior for your account in YouTube before relying on an automatic archive.
Quick Recap
Common symptoms and next steps
| Symptom | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Network drops rise on Wi-Fi but not a wired test | Wireless or local network path | Use the stable wired path and inspect the router, cable and intermediate devices. |
| Network drops rise even on Ethernet | Upload stability, ISP route or ingest connection | Test upload at the problem time, lower bitrate if needed, and give timestamps and logs to the ISP if local checks pass. |
| Rendering lag rises while network drops stay low | GPU or scene-rendering load | Simplify scenes, reduce GPU work, or lower resolution/frame rate. |
| Encoding lag rises while network drops stay low | Encoder load or output settings | Reduce encoding demands and verify the selected frame rate and resolution. |
| YouTube reports video ingestion starvation | Insufficient or interrupted incoming video | Check sustained bitrate and the complete encoder-to-YouTube path. |
| YouTube reports a codec, frame-rate, bitrate or keyframe issue | Settings mismatch or unsupported configuration | Align OBS output and YouTube’s selected stream configuration; use the named warning to guide the change. |
| Viewers report buffering but broadcaster counters look normal | Viewer playback or delivery path | Check YouTube health and viewer-side conditions before changing OBS output. |
