You can keep a YouTube Live playlist running from AWS Lightsail by having an encoder process on a Linux instance read your source or playlist and send a live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Lightsail hosts the process; it does not provide a ready-made playlist encoder. You must configure and test the encoder, ensure the instance can sustain the workload, and plan for interruptions, transfer usage, and content rights.

What the setup does—and what it does not guarantee

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. In this arrangement, the encoder runs on the Lightsail instance and sends its output to YouTube’s ingest service. Your playlist is the encoder’s input; YouTube’s stream URL and key are its destination credentials.

This is a do-it-yourself hosting pattern, not a turnkey Lightsail feature. The official guidance does not establish a particular FFmpeg loop command, playlist syntax, systemd service, restart policy, Lightsail bundle size, or guarantee that one encoder session can remain live indefinitely. Treat commands or configurations found elsewhere as starting points to validate with your own files, instance, and YouTube stream.

Before you create the instance

Confirm the YouTube channel can go live

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming and confirm eligibility before planning a launch.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the encoding approach

Decide whether the Lightsail instance must encode the video or can send already-encoded media through a compatible workflow. Encoding demands depend on the source, codec, resolution, frame rate, and chosen settings. AWS identifies compute-optimized Lightsail plans as useful for video-encoding workloads, but that does not establish that any specific plan is sufficient for your stream. If you need consistently high CPU performance and more configurability, AWS recommends considering EC2.

Estimate storage and data transfer

Lightsail bundles combine vCPU, memory, storage, and data transfer; allowance and plan details vary by region. Estimate the stream’s outbound data before choosing a plan. As a rough decimal-unit estimate, a constant 1 Mbps feed uses about 10.8 GB per day, or about 324 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and other instance traffic. Multiply by your actual bitrate and planned uptime, then compare the estimate with the allowance shown for the instance and region. Exceeding the monthly allowance can incur charges for outbound internet transfer; monitor usage rather than treating the allowance as guaranteed performance.

Create and prepare the Lightsail host

  1. Create a Linux instance. In the Lightsail console, choose a Linux/Unix operating system image and a bundle based on your measured CPU, memory, storage, and transfer needs. No bundle size is established as adequate for every resolution or encoding path; validate the chosen configuration under the intended load.
  2. Secure administration access. Lightsail firewall rules govern inbound access to the instance’s public IP. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where practical. The outbound encoder connection to YouTube does not require opening an inbound YouTube ingest port on the instance. Lightsail maintains separate IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules, so review both if the instance uses both address families.
  3. Decide whether you need a stable public address. A default public IPv4 address changes when an instance is stopped and started. Attach a Lightsail static IP if external administration or DNS depends on an address that stays stable while attached. This is separate from the encoder’s outbound connection to YouTube.
  4. Install and configure your encoder. Choose an encoder compatible with your media and operating system, install it using its current documentation, and arrange for it to read or produce the intended playlist feed. Confirm file paths, permissions, media compatibility, audio behavior, and how the process handles the end of a file or playlist. The exact playlist format and looping options depend on the encoder and are not specified by YouTube’s general encoder setup pages.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream intended for this broadcast. Retrieve the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream; do not substitute values from an unrelated example.
  2. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to the stream. Do not place it in a public script repository, shared screenshot, or public log. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
  3. Set the destination and transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s destination settings exactly as displayed in Live Control Room, using the encoder’s supported method for handling the key securely.
  4. Choose encoder settings that fit the source and host. YouTube’s general guidance recommends H.264 among supported video codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings appropriate to the source, network capacity, and CPU headroom. A setting that exceeds the instance’s sustained encoding or upload capacity can cause poor stream health; do not assume that a bundle’s transfer allowance proves it can deliver the required real-time bitrate.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Run a controlled test. Start with a private or unlisted stream if appropriate. Confirm that the encoder connects, YouTube receives the feed, and the preview shows the expected picture and sound.
  2. Check stream health and the watch page. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test, then confirm that the intended watch page is accessible to the audience you selected. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring during the event.
  3. Test failure and recovery cases. Before relying on unattended operation, test what happens when the encoder process exits, the instance restarts, network connectivity drops, or YouTube disconnects the feed. Verify which components restart automatically and whether the encoder reconnects as intended; do not assume a successful initial connection proves recovery works.
  4. Check archive expectations. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archival note is not a guarantee that a single encoder session can remain live indefinitely. Confirm current YouTube behavior and plan how you will handle session limits, interruptions, and any archive you need to retain.

Copyright, music, and YouTube rules

A continuous loop is still a live broadcast. You must have the rights needed to exploit the content worldwide, including applicable music rights, and comply with YouTube’s terms and applicable laws. Keep permissions for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive. Repeating a video does not grant permission to use its footage, soundtrack, or other protected material.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm that the encoder is targeting the selected stream, and verify outbound connectivity. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The feed connects but stream health is poor: Compare the configured bitrate and resolution with actual CPU and network capacity. Reduce settings to a sustainable level, check for CPU saturation, and run another monitored test.
  • Video or audio is missing or incorrect: Check source-file compatibility, the encoder’s input selection, audio track configuration, and the preview in Live Control Room. Test with a short representative segment before relying on the full playlist.
  • The playlist stops at the end of a file: Confirm that the encoder’s playlist and loop behavior are configured for the intended sequence. Playlist syntax and loop flags depend on the selected encoder; validate against that encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming a generic command will work.
  • The stream does not recover after interruption: Test the process supervisor, host restart behavior, and encoder reconnect behavior separately. Configure and verify each recovery layer; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide a Lightsail-specific restart recipe.
  • Transfer charges or allowance exhaustion are a concern: Recalculate usage from the actual bitrate and uptime, account for other instance traffic, compare with the regional allowance, and monitor Lightsail usage during operation.
