How to Set OBS Bitrate for a 24/7 Relaxation Stream on a Slow Indian Connection

Start with OBS at 640×360, 30 fps, H.264, and CBR; then test the stream using the upload connection and conditions you will rely on. YouTube lists 0.4 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for 360p30 and 4 Mbps as its recommended bitrate. The minimum is a published floor, not a guarantee of acceptable picture quality, so treat a lower-than-recommended setting as an experiment and keep it only if repeated tests are stable and the picture and audio work for your viewers. There is no single bitrate that fits every Indian connection.

Choose a bitrate from measured upload, not a national assumption

“Slow connection” can mean very different things depending on location, ISP, access type, congestion, and time of day. No India-wide sustained upload figure establishes what your particular connection can stream. Measure upload performance where the stream will run, preferably at several times including the expected broadcast hours. YouTube advises checking upload speed and testing before going live; a speed test is a snapshot, not a promise of continuous capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance

OBS sends video and audio over the same connection. Leave headroom rather than setting video bitrate equal to the speed-test result, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during an actual test. If performance is unstable, lower the video bitrate or output resolution and test again rather than assuming your download speed is relevant.

YouTube bitrate reference for H.264

YouTube’s current encoder table, accessed in 2026 (no publication date shown), gives these H.264 figures. Minimums are platform-listed floors, not quality guarantees.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

For a constrained connection, 360p30 is a reasonable first test, not a claim that 0.4 Mbps will look good for every relaxation video. YouTube recommends 4 Mbps at that setting. Start conservatively, test a representative scene, and choose the highest bitrate that remains stable with usable picture and intelligible audio. Raise resolution only when repeated tests support it; 480p30 and 360p30 have the same listed recommended bitrate, while 720p30 has a substantially higher one. A lower frame rate can be worth testing for a mostly static scene, but the available guidance does not quantify its bandwidth savings or promise a particular visual result.

Configure OBS and YouTube for a low-bandwidth test

  1. Set the output canvas: In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the output resolution to 640×360 and common FPS value to 30. This is the suggested starting experiment for this situation, not a YouTube mandate.
  2. Set the streaming encoder: Open Settings → Output → Streaming. Choose H.264 (often shown as x264 or an H.264 hardware encoder) and set rate control to CBR if that option is exposed. Enter a conservative video bitrate informed by repeated upload tests. OBS encoder choices and labels can vary with platform and installed hardware.
  3. Set keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds for its RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings.
  4. Account for audio: Keep the audio track enabled and remember that audio also uses upload capacity. Listen to the test from a viewer’s perspective; a low video bitrate is not useful if the relaxation audio breaks up or disappears.
  5. Connect the stream: In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the data to and through YouTube’s servers.
  6. Run a representative private or unlisted test: Use the same video, audio, movement, scene changes, and transitions intended for the live broadcast. Check OBS’s dropped frames and connection status, as well as YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and visual movement to the real event.
  7. Adjust one step at a time: If health is poor, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again. Once 360p30 is stable, try 480p30; consider 720p30 only when the connection has enough measured headroom. Do not jump straight to a higher setting based on advertised plan speeds.

Check a 24/7 setup beyond bitrate

A bitrate that works in a short test may fail during a long run. Before leaving OBS unattended, run a longer trial that covers the stream’s actual video and audio, and check the computer’s power settings, temperature, and network stability. Confirm that OBS and YouTube reconnect as expected after a brief interruption. The cited YouTube encoder guidance does not prescribe a special bitrate or continuity configuration for 24/7 broadcasts, so these are operational checks rather than guarantees of uninterrupted service.

For a documentary or relaxation channel, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, ambient recordings, and other material in the loop. A long-running stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies; a technically healthy stream does not establish that its content is cleared or eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot instability and poor quality

  • YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: Lower OBS’s video bitrate, then retest. Confirm the upload rate at the stream location and time, and leave capacity for audio and fluctuations.
  • OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects: The cause may be an unstable network route or streaming server, not simply an overly high resolution. OBS recommends trying a different server and contacting the ISP if problems persist. See the OBS Project connection troubleshooting guide.
  • Test looks acceptable, but the live stream does not: Match the test to the actual scene’s motion, transitions, and audio, and monitor stream health during the event. A still image alone may not reveal how a moving loop behaves.
  • Audio or video looks weak at the minimum bitrate: YouTube’s minimum is not a promise of acceptable quality. Test a higher stable bitrate if capacity allows, or reduce resolution and evaluate the result. Do not claim that a particular lower-than-recommended bitrate will preserve quality.
  • Settings do not match YouTube’s guidance: Verify H.264, CBR, RTMP/RTMPS, and the 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Wi-Fi seems inconsistent: A wired connection may help if Wi-Fi instability is the problem, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by the ISP. OBS’s guidance focuses on connection troubleshooting rather than guaranteeing a benefit from any particular accessory.
