The best chess stream overlay is usually a clear board, not a crowded frame. For commentary on Chess.com tournaments, capture the Events page’s Analysis board in OBS; it offers board and piece customization, player names and clocks, coordinates, arrows, and highlights. Add a separate Live Tracking Board if viewers need to see the current game while you analyze a variation. Choose themed designs for branding and browser-source widgets for extra player data or stream alerts.
Choose an overlay by what your stream needs
“Overlay” can mean the chessboard itself, a ready-made visual frame, a data layer, or widgets such as alerts and chat. Decide which elements must be live and readable before choosing a design. A decorative overlay does not necessarily provide synchronized game information.

Use Chess.com’s Events Analysis board for tournament commentary
Chess.com’s Events broadcast guide documents an Analysis view designed for live games and analysis on a large board. It lets broadcasters customize board and piece appearance, show or hide coordinates, and arrange player names and clocks. For a more compact layout, names and clocks can sit above and below the board. Right-clicking lets you add colored arrows or highlight squares. Engine and evaluation controls and move classification are also available.
Set up the board and capture
- Open the relevant Chess.com Events page and use its Analysis view to display the game or position you want to discuss.
- Adjust board and piece appearance, coordinates, and the placement of player names and clocks for the space available in your scene.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture for the browser window showing the Events page. Chess.com says, “Window Capture is generally the preferred choice, as it ensures that any accidental overlays of other windows over the browser window will not affect your capture.”
- Crop the capture to the board and any names or clocks you need. Chess.com’s guide notes that multiple crops from the same window capture can reduce memory use and CPU load compared with using multiple captures.
- If you need a transparent-looking board layer, the guide describes using Chroma Key to remove or replace the analysis-page background.
Screen Capture is another option, but it captures the selected display rather than only the browser window. Whichever method you use, check the final scene at stream size: squares, pieces, names, and clocks should remain legible, and the crop should not hide the game state.

Keep the live position visible during analysis
When you want to explore variations without replacing the position viewers are following, enable Live Board Tracking and open its linked tracking board in a separate browser tab. Chess.com says the tracking board follows selected games but does not mirror analysis moves made on the main board. Capture the second board separately; the guide recommends Window Capture for it too.
Use a themed overlay for branding, not assumed game data
Streamlabs’ November 15, 2023 article “Best Overlays for Chess Gameplay” names Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, Black on Black, Block, and Nightmode. In that dated article, Black on Black is labeled free; Chess Galaxy, Cubic Wave, and Block are labeled free for Streamlabs Ultra subscribers. Those labels may not reflect the current library or terms, so check access before choosing or paying for a preset. The article does not establish that these designs supply live chess information; use a separate board source unless the current product listing explicitly confirms otherwise.

Keep the board visually dominant. A frame that reduces the board too much or places decorative elements over clocks and pieces works against commentary, even if its theme suits the channel.
Add player information or statistics with a specialized browser source
ChessBhumi advertises a transparent browser-source layer with player names, ratings, and live-ticking clocks. ChesStats advertises live Chess.com and Lichess player performance statistics, overlay columns, alerts, a palette, and several output formats. These are vendor descriptions, not independently verified performance or reliability findings. Before relying on either, confirm its current feature set, platform support, account requirements, pricing, and how its data stays synchronized with the game.

Use a specialized source when the additional information answers a real viewer need. Avoid stacking names, ratings, clocks, and statistics in a way that makes the board harder to read.
Put alerts, chat, and labels in a separate OBS layer
OBS’s official tutorial describes alert-provider overlays for alerts, events lists, chat boxes, and labels. The provider supplies an overlay URL, which you add to the scene as an OBS Browser source. OBS names Streamlabs and StreamElements as example providers, alongside NerdOrDie and OWN3D Pro.

- Choose the widget you want from an alert provider and copy its overlay URL.
- In OBS, add a Browser source to the scene and enter the provider’s URL and any dimensions or settings it specifies.
- Place and resize the widget so it does not cover the board, clocks, or player information; preview the scene before going live.
These widgets complement a chessboard source; they are not a substitute for one.

- Board legibility: Can viewers distinguish pieces and squares and read the names and clocks at the board’s displayed size?
- Live state versus analysis: If you analyze a variation, does the scene still show the current game position where needed?
- Screen space: Do the board, webcam, and optional widgets fit without crowding or covering important information?
- Data and synchronization: Is each layer decorative, or does it provide game information? Confirm that any live data source tracks the right game.
- Access and maintenance: Check current subscription terms and whether a browser source depends on a particular service or account.
A webcam is optional; it is not needed to display the board or make an overlay work. Chess.com’s 2023 community streaming guide names the Logitech C922 among streamer webcam recommendations, but it is not a current comparative camera test.

Keep the stream running separately from the overlay choice
