The simplest setup is a USB webcam plugged into the streaming computer; an existing phone or tablet can work as a remote camera, too. Choose based on how far the pet’s usual spot is from the computer and what your software and devices support.
Choose the right pet-camera setup

A tripod can make it easier to aim a phone, but it is optional. A stable shelf or other secure support may be enough. Avoid placing any camera where a pet can knock it over, chew its cable, or reach a hot or unstable device.
Add a USB webcam in OBS
- Connect the webcam. Plug it into the streaming computer and place it where it can see the pet’s usual resting area.
- Add a capture source. In OBS, select the scene where you want the pet view, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose Video Capture Device (the source name may vary by OBS version or operating system). Create a new source and select the webcam from the device list.
- Set the picture. If the default image is not usable, check the source’s device properties for resolution and frame-rate options supported by that camera. Device and capture-source behavior can vary by operating system.
- Frame the pet. Resize and position the camera image in the preview. Crop it if needed, and keep it from covering captions, documentary footage, or other important stream content.
- Check visibility and audio. Confirm the pet-camera source is visible in the preview. If the webcam includes a microphone, decide whether its audio should be part of the stream; avoid unintentionally adding room noise or duplicate audio.
OBS’s Video Capture Sources documentation explains source and device settings, and its webcam setup guidance covers adding and positioning a camera. The available controls and device behavior depend on the camera and operating system.
Use a phone or tablet as a second camera
Streamlabs Collab Cam
- In Streamlabs, add Collab Cam as a source and copy the joining link it provides.
- Open that link on the second device, allow camera access, and join the session.
- Position, resize, or crop the incoming camera feed in your scene and check that it appears as intended.
Streamlabs’ tutorial says the second device needs a camera, internet connection, and browser access. Its support article dated March 10, 2023 describes one guest or second camera as free and says multiple guests or cameras require Streamlabs Ultra; check Streamlabs’ current plan details before relying on those limits. Connect a phone to OBS with Camera for OBS Studio
Camera for OBS Studio documents USB and NDI/Wi-Fi workflows. Follow its current instructions for installing and connecting the phone app and OBS component, then add the resulting camera feed as a source in OBS. Its documentation describes USB as the lower-latency, more reliable connection and NDI/Wi-Fi as the more mobile choice when the local network is suitable. These trade-offs apply to this product; they should not be assumed for every phone-camera app.
The same documentation says Streamlabs Desktop uses only the NDI Wi-Fi path for this product because Streamlabs Desktop does not allow third-party OBS plugins. Check the app’s current compatibility guidance for your desktop software and operating system before setting it up: Camera for OBS Studio setup documentation.

Use a dedicated pet or network camera
Some pet-camera workflows use the camera maker’s online-viewable feed as a browser source; another option described by Streamlabs is displaying a pet-camera app through a phone emulator. These approaches depend on the exact camera and software. Confirm that the feed can be opened or ingested by your streaming setup and that the camera maker permits the intended use.
An IP camera may be usable through RTSP if both the camera and ingest software support it and the camera and streaming computer are on the same network. Do not assume a consumer pet camera exposes RTSP. Check the model’s specifications and setup manual first; AVer’s OBS Plugin for PTZ Cameras manual describes RTSP prerequisites for its supported workflow.

Position the camera and check the scene
- Frame for movement. Aim at the place the pet usually rests, leaving enough room that ordinary movement does not take it out of frame.
- Keep the main content readable. Place the pet view where it does not obscure documentary video, captions, or other essential information.
- Make the view easy to toggle. In OBS or Streamlabs, use the source visibility control to hide or show the camera. Streamlabs documents assigning hotkeys to its visibility controls.
- Check audio deliberately. Verify whether camera audio is enabled and that it does not conflict with the program audio.
- Preview before going live. Confirm the camera appears, the framing and focus are acceptable, and the show/hide control works. A short private or unlisted test stream can help you check how the full scene looks and sounds.
Troubleshoot a missing or poor camera feed
