In Streamlabs, open the Alert Box settings, choose an alert type, select + Add Variation, set a condition, customize the variation, and save. Add the Alert Box to your streaming scene and test it before going live. StreamElements offers a separate editor for configurable alerts and variations; its controls are not the same as Streamlabs’.
What an alert variation does
An alert variation lets one event type use different presentation settings when a condition is met. For example, you can configure a distinct message or sound for a qualifying event. A variation belongs to a particular alert type, so set it up under the event it should handle. The controls available can differ by event and platform.
Set up a variation in Streamlabs
- Open the relevant alert. In Streamlabs Alert Box settings, select the platform and event type you want to customize, such as follows, subscriptions, or tips, where those events are supported for your platform.
- Add the variation. Under that alert type, select + Add Variation. Give it a recognizable name so you can identify its purpose later.
- Set the condition. Configure the variation’s Condition to match the event or threshold you intend it to handle. Check the condition carefully: it determines when this variation is used.
- Customize its presentation. Adjust the message template and sound as needed. Streamlabs documents dynamic name text such as
{name}. Available options can vary by alert type, so confirm the settings shown for the event you selected. - Save your settings. Save before leaving the current menu so the variation and its condition are retained.
Add the Alert Box to your streaming scene
Creating an alert in the dashboard does not by itself place it in your broadcast. Add the Alert Box to the software and scene where viewers should see it.
- Streamlabs Desktop: Add an Alert Box source to the scene.
- OBS with the Streamlabs plugin: Use the plugin’s Widgets menu to add the Alert Box.
- Other streaming software: Copy the widget URL from Streamlabs and add it as a browser source, following that software’s steps for browser sources.
Position and size the source so it does not obscure documentary footage, captions, or other important scene elements. Check that the source is visible in the scene in which you expect the alert to appear.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test before going live
- Use Streamlabs’ test or preview controls to trigger the alert you configured.
- Check the text, sound, and any other presentation settings in the streaming scene—not only in the dashboard.
- Test the event types and variations that matter to your setup. A preview confirms the configured presentation, but it does not necessarily reproduce every live platform condition.
Using StreamElements instead
StreamElements provides its own alert workflow in the Elements Editor. Its documentation covers dynamic text and sound, and its Alert Box template page describes customization including fonts, timing, sounds, effects, and variations. Examples include follows, subscriptions, tips, cheers, raids, and community gifts; examples do not establish that every event is available for every platform or account.
Set up and inspect each variation in StreamElements’ own editor rather than following Streamlabs button names. Add the resulting alert to your scene using the integration method supported by your streaming software, then use the service’s own preview or test controls and verify the result in the scene.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The variation never appears: Confirm it is under the intended alert type, review its condition against the event you are testing, and save the settings.
- The alert works in the dashboard but not in the broadcast: Confirm the Alert Box source or browser source is added to the active scene and that it is visible there.
- The message or sound is wrong: Reopen the specific variation and inspect its message template and sound selection. Check the event’s available controls rather than assuming all alert types share identical settings.
- A test does not match a real event: Treat preview as a check of the configured presentation, not proof that every live platform condition has been simulated. Verify the event and platform support for your account.
- StreamElements instructions do not match your screen: Use the Elements Editor workflow for StreamElements; Streamlabs’ variation labels and menus are not universal.
Or let it run in the cloud
Alert variations control on-screen event notifications; they do not keep a video livestream running. If you also want a pre-recorded YouTube stream to continue while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
