Short answer: YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns whether a live stream is saved as an archive and how far viewers can rewind—not a general rule that a live broadcast must stop at 12 hours. If the live player actually goes offline, check the encoder and the connection sending the stream to YouTube.
First identify what stopped
“Stopped” can describe three different problems. Identify which one you saw before changing settings: a live broadcast going offline, a replay not appearing, or viewers losing the ability to rewind.
| Symptom | What it means | First place to check |
|---|---|---|
| The live player went offline | The live transmission or broadcast ended. The 12-hour archive guidance does not, by itself, explain this. | Encoder status and errors, CPU load, and the outbound internet connection. |
| The live stream ended but no replay was saved | This is an archive issue, not proof that YouTube stopped the live transmission at 12 hours. | YouTube’s archive guidance and whether you made a local recording. |
| Viewers could not rewind far enough | This concerns DVR, YouTube’s pause-and-rewind feature during a live stream. | DVR behavior and the viewer’s device or app. |
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually says
Archives are not guaranteed for longer streams
YouTube Help says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived and cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a warning about the replay, not a statement that YouTube automatically disconnects every live transmission at 12 hours. YouTube Help: archive live streams.
If keeping a replay matters, make a local recording as a backup. A local recording protects against losing the archive; it does not keep the live broadcast connected.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
DVR rewind may be limited
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It also documents lower limits for some configurations, including Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions. These limitations affect what viewers can rewind, not when the broadcaster must stop. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.
If the live player really went offline
Use the evidence from the time of the cutoff rather than treating the 12-hour mark as a diagnosis. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points broadcasters to the encoder and the outbound connection. YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues.

- Confirm the symptom. Check whether viewers saw the live player go offline at the reported time, or whether only the replay or rewind function was affected.
- Check encoder status and error messages. Look for a loss of connection or other encoder-reported problem at the cutoff.
- Check CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s CPU use; high load can be a clue to investigate, but it does not prove the cause on its own.
- Update the encoder software. YouTube advises using the current version.
- Test the outbound internet connection. The relevant connection is the one sending the live feed to YouTube. A connection test and the encoder’s status can help distinguish a transmission problem from an archive or viewer-side issue.
- If the encoder looks healthy but the issue persists, try another encoder. YouTube lists this as a troubleshooting step; it is a way to isolate the problem, not proof that the original encoder was at fault.
The Live Streaming API also distinguishes an incoming liveStream from the liveBroadcast viewers see. In practical terms, the incoming feed, broadcast state, archive, and viewer playback are related but distinct parts of the live experience. YouTube Live Streaming API.
What evidence helps pinpoint the cause
- Whether the live player went offline, and the exact time it happened.
- The encoder’s status and any error messages around that time.
- Encoder CPU load and the result of an outbound connection test.
- Whether the problem affected the live player, the saved replay, or rewind on a particular viewer’s device or app.
Without those details, it is not possible to attribute a particular cutoff to YouTube, the encoder, or an internet provider. The 12-hour timing alone does not identify the cause.
