Set its custom thumbnail in the video’s details in YouTube Studio, then schedule the Premiere. If you mean an encoder-based scheduled livestream, manage that stream in Live Control Room instead; uploading a thumbnail does not turn a finished video into an encoder-based live broadcast.
First, choose the right YouTube format

YouTube distinguishes a Premiere from a livestream: a Premiere is an uploaded video presented for shared, timed viewing, while an encoder-based stream is a broadcast feed. For an uploaded documentary or other finished video, use the Premiere instructions below.
Set a custom thumbnail for a Premiere
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- From the left menu, select Content.
- Select the video you want to schedule. This opens its video details.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file, then select the image from your computer.
- Save the change. YouTube notes that thumbnail changes can take time to appear.
- To schedule the video as a Premiere, set its visibility to Public, select Set as Premiere, choose the schedule and Premiere options, and schedule it. YouTube creates a public watch page viewers can visit before the Premiere starts.
You need a verified YouTube account to upload a custom video thumbnail. YouTube’s custom-thumbnail workflow described here is for video uploads in Studio on a computer; Shorts use a different flow.
Prepare an image that meets YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current video-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels; the minimum width is 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are among the listed formats. YouTube lists different maximum file sizes by device: up to 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile and up to 50 MB on desktop. These are YouTube’s documented recommendations and limits, not general image-format requirements.

- Use a clear frame or designed image that represents the documentary accurately.
- Check that any title text remains legible when the thumbnail appears small.
- Keep the image within YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Prohibited material can result in a rejected thumbnail or a strike.
Daily custom-thumbnail upload limits may vary by country or region and by channel history, so a limit reached on one channel may not apply identically to another.
If you mean an encoder-based scheduled livestream
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go live, and open Manage.
- Select an existing scheduled stream or create one in Live Control Room.
- Inspect the selected stream’s editable details for its thumbnail and other metadata. YouTube documents editing stream metadata during setup or from the stream’s settings, but the exact thumbnail controls can vary across interfaces; use the controls shown for that scheduled stream rather than assuming the Premiere workflow applies.
- Connect your encoder using the stream key shown for the stream. The key links the encoder’s outgoing feed to the scheduled YouTube broadcast.
Do not use the video Content workflow as a substitute for setting up an encoder stream: a Premiere thumbnail belongs to an uploaded video, while an encoder-based broadcast is configured in Live Control Room.
