OBS has no documented universal switch for blocking desktop notifications. To keep alerts out of a YouTube Live broadcast, capture only the application or window you need—or, if you must show the whole desktop, use your operating system’s notification or focus controls. Then test the actual stream output before going live.
First identify what OBS is capturing
In the active OBS scene, check which source supplies the desktop image. Display Capture captures the entire selected monitor, so a notification drawn on that screen can appear in the broadcast. OBS determines the image area being captured; the operating system determines whether it displays notifications.
If the stream only needs one application, use a window- or application-capture source where your operating system and OBS version support it. This keeps the broadcast focused without requiring you to suppress every notification on the computer.
Choose the capture method for your system
| Method | What it captures | Best suited to | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Window Capture | A selected window, even when other windows are in front of it | A stream focused on one application | It is not a system notification toggle; verify the selected window and output. |
| macOS Screen Capture in Window or Application mode | A chosen window or an application’s visible windows on macOS 13 and later | A focused app broadcast on supported macOS versions | Availability and controls depend on the macOS and OBS versions. |
| Display Capture | The entire selected monitor | A stream that needs the whole desktop | Anything shown on that display, including system alerts, can enter the capture. |
Windows: capture one application
Use a Window Capture source and select the application window you want viewers to see. OBS says the selected window remains the captured content even if other windows overlap it. This can keep notifications outside the captured image, but check the resulting preview and recording: the source must be pointed at the intended window.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
macOS: use macOS Screen Capture on macOS 13 or later
On macOS 13 and newer, OBS documents macOS Screen Capture with display, window, and application capture modes. Choose Window or Application mode when the stream does not need the whole desktop. OBS marks the older Display Capture and Window Capture sources as deprecated on macOS 13 and newer, so the suitable source depends on your macOS and OBS versions.
Linux: check the desktop environment’s controls
OBS documents Linux capture sources including XSHM and PipeWire screen capture, but the available guidance does not establish a general Linux notification-suppression procedure. Notification controls vary by desktop environment and distribution; use the instructions for your installed system rather than assuming a single menu path.

If the stream needs the whole desktop, silence notifications in the OS
For full-display capture, use your operating system’s current notification or focus controls to prevent alerts from appearing during the broadcast. Exact menu labels and paths vary by Windows or macOS version, and a single verified path is not established here. Check the official instructions for the version installed on your streaming computer, then test whether the setting suppresses the alerts you want hidden.
Do not mistake OBS’s hide-OBS options for notification blockers. On Windows, the setting is OBS Studio → Settings → General → “Hide OBS windows from screen capture.” On macOS 13 and later, OBS says to use a macOS Screen Capture source in Display Capture mode and select “Hide OBS from capture.” These options hide OBS’s own interface; they are not documented to block notifications from the operating system or other applications.

Test the broadcast before going live
- Open the scene you plan to use and confirm the active capture source and, where applicable, the selected window or application.
- Apply your operating system’s notification or focus setting if you are capturing the full display.
- Make a short test recording or a private test stream. If appropriate, wait for or trigger an ordinary notification while the test is running.
- Review the captured output—not just the OBS preview—to confirm whether an alert appeared and whether the intended application or desktop is framed correctly.
- If the test exposes a notification, switch to a supported window or application source, adjust the OS notification setting, or revise which display is captured, then test again.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before relying on them in a live session. A clean preview alone is not a substitute for checking the recording or test stream.
When minimizing OBS or using another display helps
OBS troubleshooting suggests minimizing OBS when it is not needed or using a secondary display to keep the OBS window away from the captured display. These workarounds can prevent OBS’s own interface from appearing in a full-display capture. They do not silence notifications from the operating system or other applications, so use notification controls or a narrower capture source for those.

Desktop notifications are not stream alerts
A desktop notification is an operating-system or application alert that may be drawn over a captured screen. A stream alert is an intentional graphic added to the scene. OBS’s FAQ says OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts; third-party alert overlays can be added as a Browser Source. Adding or removing such an overlay does not control desktop notifications.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your YouTube channel runs a pre-recorded programme continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
