There is no single conversion command that fixes every YouTube Live “format” rejection. First check whether the stream is configured for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS: the protocols require different output. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. For HLS, it requires MPEG-TS segments and a rolling playlist delivered to the HLS ingestion URL. Changing a file extension or container alone will not turn an unsupported codec into a supported one.
Identify the playlist type and YouTube ingest protocol
“Playlist” can mean an HLS .m3u8 media playlist, or a text file listing media files for FFmpeg to process. These are not interchangeable. The playlist format, the encoded audio/video codecs, the output container, and YouTube’s selected ingest protocol all matter.
Before changing files, collect the details that distinguish a parsing error from a codec or delivery problem:
- The complete YouTube Live error message.
- Your full FFmpeg command, with stream keys and private URL credentials removed.
- The first several lines of the playlist, also with private URLs removed, and whether it is an HLS playlist or a list of files.
- The input file’s codecs and container. You can inspect them with
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4; redact any private information in output you share. - The protocol selected for the YouTube stream: RTMP/RTMPS or HLS.
Use the protocol shown in Live Control Room, not a guessed protocol based on the file’s extension. YouTube’s requirements differ between these ingest paths. YouTube’s live encoder settings cover RTMP/RTMPS; its HLS setup instructions specify the HLS requirements.

RTMP or RTMPS: encode a compatible continuous stream
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Follow YouTube’s current bitrate table for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
If your source already has compatible codecs and encoded properties, stream copy may be possible. For example, a basic file-to-RTMP command using stream copy is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the example destination with the ingest URL and stream key from your YouTube Live settings. This command does not convert the codecs or correct incompatible encoded properties. If the input video or audio is incompatible, or if YouTube rejects its properties, re-encode instead. A starting point for H.264 video and AAC audio is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
The example’s video bitrate and 60-frame keyframe interval assume 1080p at 30 fps; adjust them for the actual frame rate and resolution using YouTube’s current table. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264. Those figures are specific to that resolution, frame rate, and codec. The example is not a universal setting or a diagnosis of a format rejection.

-stream_loop -1 repeats a single input file. For a playlist of files, FFmpeg must be given an input format and playlist structure it can read; do not add this option and assume it will interpret an arbitrary text list as intended. Check the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and make sure listed files have compatible streams before using a concat list. If the playlist is already an HLS .m3u8, use the HLS path below only if YouTube is configured for HLS.
HLS: produce TS segments and a rolling playlist
For HLS ingestion, select HLS in YouTube Live Control Room and use the HTTPS ingestion URL provided for that stream. YouTube requires MPEG-TS (.ts) segments, segment durations between one and four seconds, no byte-range mode, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and delivery by HTTPS POST or PUT. Its instructions state: “Segment Format: must be TS (Transport Stream).” YouTube lists H.264 and HEVC video, and AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio for HLS.
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can create a playlist and MPEG-TS segments. Its documentation shows the method option and an HTTP PUT example. A simplified output pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f hls -hls_time 2 -hls_list_size 5 -hls_flags delete_segments -method PUT "YOUR_YOUTUBE_HLS_URL/stream.m3u8"
This is a structural example, not a guaranteed working YouTube command: use the actual HLS URL from Live Control Room and verify that the endpoint accepts the selected upload method. FFmpeg’s documentation explicitly notes that the receiving server must support the chosen method. Do not substitute the illustrative URL in the FFmpeg manual for YouTube’s URL. For other HLS requirements—especially byte-range behavior and the exact rolling playlist behavior—follow YouTube’s current instructions and validate the generated output before sending it.
HLS is segment-based and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream. YouTube’s HLS setup page says its ultra-low-latency option is turned off when HLS is selected. Do not switch to HLS merely to change how an input playlist is read; the stream protocol has to match the ingest URL and requirements.

Know when to re-encode, repackage, or fix the playlist
- Re-encode when a video or audio codec, or another encoded property, is incompatible with the selected protocol. Re-encoding changes the encoded stream.
- Repackage when the codecs are acceptable but the output container or segment packaging does not meet the protocol’s requirements. Repackaging does not convert an unsupported codec.
- Fix playlist parsing when FFmpeg cannot read the input list or its entries. Confirm what kind of playlist it is, that referenced files exist, and that the paths and durations are valid for the input format.
- Fix delivery when YouTube is set for HLS but the output is not TS segments, the playlist is not rolling as required, or the HTTP method or URL is wrong.
A change from one extension to another is not a codec conversion. Likewise, stream copy (-c copy) preserves the encoded audio and video; it cannot make an incompatible codec become H.264 or AAC.
Troubleshoot the rejection by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unsupported format or codec | Protocol-specific codecs and encoded properties | Confirm RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS. Inspect the input with ffprobe; re-encode only if the stream is incompatible with the selected protocol. |
| FFmpeg cannot open or parse the playlist | Playlist type, syntax, paths, or access to listed files | Identify whether it is an HLS .m3u8 or an FFmpeg file list. Check the playlist entries and share the opening lines with private URLs removed. |
| HLS upload fails despite a generated playlist | Ingestion URL, HTTPS delivery method, or HLS packaging | Use the URL from Live Control Room. Check for TS segments, one-to-four-second segment duration, no byte ranges, a rolling list capped at five outstanding segments, and POST or PUT delivery as required by YouTube. |
| The stream starts but YouTube reports a configuration issue | RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings or HLS-specific output rules | Check the settings for the configured protocol, including codecs, CBR and keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS, or playlist and segment requirements for HLS. |
| A change to the extension or container does not help | Codec remains unchanged | Use re-encoding if the codec itself is incompatible; a container change alone is not enough. |
If the rejection persists, provide the exact error, full command with secrets removed, playlist type and opening lines, input codec details, and selected ingest protocol. Without those, it is not possible to identify which failure applies or give a reliable tailored command.
