To clean install a graphics driver, first identify the GPU and download the correct driver, then use the GPU maker’s installer option—NVIDIA’s Custom (Advanced) → Perform a clean installation, Intel’s clean-install checkbox, or AMD Radeon Software’s Clean Install when offered. Restart as directed and verify the driver in Device Manager. This can address driver-installation problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for dropped frames, encoding lag, or other streaming issues.
Before you start: identify the GPU and get the right package
- Check the graphics adapter. In Windows, open Device Manager → Display adapters and note the GPU model. A computer can have more than one adapter, so identify which one is used for the workload. Microsoft explains that the generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter lacks some capabilities typically provided by the manufacturer’s driver, including improved performance, video playback, resolution, multi-monitor support, and stability: Microsoft’s guide to the basic display adapter.
- Download the matching driver before removing anything. Use the GPU maker’s package for the exact GPU and Windows version. On a laptop or branded PC, check the computer maker’s support page too: OEMs may customize driver features or packaging. Intel specifically advises checking with the computer manufacturer first: Intel’s clean-install guide.
- Save work and close applications. Close streaming software, games, browsers, video players, GPU monitoring or tuning utilities, and other apps that use 3D acceleration. NVIDIA warns these can interfere with installation; Windows Update activity can also disrupt its installer. Do not treat NVIDIA’s procedure-specific mention of third-party security software as a general reason to disable protection; NVIDIA says Microsoft Defender can remain running: NVIDIA’s manual clean-install instructions.
- Understand what is being cleaned. A clean driver installation replaces graphics-driver software; it is not a clean installation of Windows. Reinstalling Windows is a separate operation that can remove personal files, apps, and settings: Microsoft’s Windows reinstall guide.
Choose the least disruptive method that fits the problem
Start with the GPU vendor’s installer cleanup option for a routine reinstall. Use a standalone cleanup utility when the normal installer fails or you have reason to suspect a more persistent corrupted installation. Also account for OEM drivers and, for AMD, whether you need Radeon recording or streaming controls. These options differ in cleanup depth and rollback consequences; they do not establish that reinstalling a driver will improve streaming performance.

NVIDIA: use the installer’s clean-install checkbox
- Download the matching Game Ready Driver for your GPU from NVIDIA’s driver download page.
- Close open applications, then run the downloaded installer as administrator.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), then check Perform a clean installation.
- Complete setup and restart the PC.
NVIDIA’s cited instructions are specifically for manually recovering from a failed NVIDIA App driver installation. They do not call for routinely disabling security software: the guide says Microsoft Defender is safe to leave running. Avoid applying any procedure-specific advice about third-party scanning more broadly than NVIDIA states.
Intel: use its clean-install option, or remove the driver manually
- Identify the Intel graphics product and download its matching package. For a laptop or OEM system, check the computer manufacturer’s driver page first because its package may be customized.
- Run the Intel installer and select the clean-install checkbox if it appears. Finish setup and restart if prompted.
- If the checkbox is absent or the installation problem remains, use Intel’s manual route: disconnect from the internet to reduce the chance that Windows installs a driver automatically during removal.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters, right-click the Intel graphics device, and choose Uninstall device. Select Delete the driver software for this device if that option is available.
- Restart, then run the Intel package you downloaded. During the gap between uninstall and reinstall, Windows may show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
Intel says its clean installation removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to default, and clears the shader cache. Intel’s clean-install guide was last reviewed on 2026-09-09 and identifies a Windows 10 64-bit environment; its instructions and package availability may vary by product and Windows version. AMD Radeon: use Clean Install or AMD Cleanup Utility
Use Radeon Software’s Clean Install option first
If Radeon Software detects an existing version, its installer may offer Clean Install on the Custom Install screen. AMD says this attempts to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the selected components, and can help with common corrupted-install problems. The important trade-off is that this option prevents using Device Manager to roll back to the previous driver. Follow the labels in the current package; see AMD’s Radeon installation guidance.
Use AMD Cleanup Utility for deeper cleanup
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD.
- Run it when a more thorough AMD graphics and audio driver cleanup is warranted. AMD recommends Safe Mode for best results. The utility runs on Windows 7 and later, but check AMD’s current instructions for compatibility and procedure.
- Allow cleanup to finish, then reboot as required. AMD says display flicker or a brief blank screen during cleanup is normal, and that the utility creates a System Restore Point before cleanup.
- Install the previously downloaded matching Radeon package and restart if prompted.
The Cleanup Utility removes AMD graphics and audio driver software; it does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers. AMD last updated its utility article on 2025-09-29: AMD Cleanup Utility details.

Choose an installation type that includes the features you need
If you rely on Radeon’s built-in recording or streaming features, check the components included by the installer. AMD’s installation-types page describes Full installation as including gaming, recording, streaming, and performance-tuning features, while Minimal and Driver Only omit some or all controls. Its examples are based on Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1, so verify current labels and included features rather than assuming that old version’s choices are unchanged: AMD’s installation-types guide.
Restart, verify, and test the streaming setup
- Restart whenever the installer or cleanup utility requests it.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters and confirm the intended GPU appears. Check that Windows is not still using a generic adapter when the vendor driver should be installed.
- Open the streaming application and confirm it can see the expected GPU and encoder. Recheck any capture, recording, or streaming controls you depend on, especially after changing AMD installation types.
- Test the same game or video, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, and streaming application settings as before. Keeping those variables constant makes it easier to tell whether the driver change affected the symptom; it is a troubleshooting comparison, not a guarantee that the driver was the cause.
Microsoft’s screen-flicker guide suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display, and lists updating, rolling back, or uninstalling a display driver among possible responses. Common problems and what to try
- The installer does not offer a clean-install option. Options depend on vendor, package, and detected installation. Confirm you downloaded the correct GPU and Windows package; use the vendor’s documented alternative rather than assuming every installer has the same checkbox.
- Windows replaces the driver during removal. Intel’s manual removal guidance recommends disconnecting from the internet to avoid an automatic Windows driver update before you install the downloaded package.
- The screen flickers or briefly goes blank during AMD cleanup. AMD describes this as normal during AMD Cleanup Utility operation. Let the process complete and reboot as instructed.
- The vendor driver is unavailable or behaves differently on a laptop. Check the PC maker’s support page for its customized package. Intel warns generic drivers may differ from OEM-customized versions.
- Streaming lag or dropped frames remain. A clean driver install is only one troubleshooting step. Compare the same content, output settings, encoder, and application configuration, then investigate the relevant streaming or network issue rather than assuming the driver reinstall failed or that another reinstall is required.
- A new driver causes a different problem. Consider the vendor’s supported rollback route or the PC maker’s package. If you chose AMD Radeon Software’s Clean Install option, note that AMD says Device Manager rollback to the prior driver is unavailable through that route.
