You can make a continuous Punjabi Bhangra YouTube stream by playing an M3U media playlist through OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, looping it, and sending the encoded output to YouTube over RTMPS. Before going live, verify every playlist entry plays, confirm you have live-stream rights for all music and video, and test the full loop and stream health. An M3U playlist is a way to organize media playback; it does not itself grant rights or configure YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol.
1. Clear the music and video rights before building the stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. YouTube Help says a detected match can replace your stream with a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the material; if it remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream.
Before broadcasting, confirm that your permission covers the intended YouTube live use and territories. If you plan to keep the broadcast as an archive, confirm archive rights separately. For licensed third-party material, YouTube instructs creators to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted without that allowlisting even when the creator has a license or geographic restrictions. Keep the license agreement and any allowlist confirmation with your channel records.
A public playlist, an M3U URL, or a consumer music subscription does not by itself establish rebroadcast rights. Check each recording and video in the playlist, including any material supplied by a remote URL. If you cannot confirm the live, territory, archive, and allowlisting terms that apply, do not include that item in the stream.

2. Check what your M3U file actually points to
An ordinary M3U media playlist is a list of playback entries. Those entries might refer to local files or media at network URLs. The file is useful only if the player can resolve and play each entry from the computer running OBS. A generic M3U is not guaranteed to work in every OBS/VLC installation: relative paths, authenticated URLs, provider-generated links, and different playlist variants can behave differently.
- Make a working copy of the playlist. Keep the original unchanged while you test. If the entries point to local files, confirm the files are present at the referenced paths on the streaming computer. Moving a playlist without its media can break relative paths.
- Open the list in the VLC installation OBS will use. Test each entry, not just the first one. Confirm that video and audio play, that remote links remain accessible, and that playback reaches the end of the list.
- Check the intended order and duration. Decide whether tracks should play in sequence or be shuffled. Listen for silence, abrupt audio changes, missing files, and unexpected gaps at item boundaries.
- Keep the source stable. Avoid changing or moving files while OBS is using the playlist. For remote media, account for the possibility that the host or link becomes unavailable during a long broadcast.
These checks validate your own list in your installed player; they do not establish universal M3U compatibility.
3. Add and loop the playlist in OBS
Install compatible VLC if the source is missing
OBS provides a VLC Video source that uses VLC libraries to play a list of media items. If VLC Video is not available among OBS source types, install VLC and reopen OBS. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC; match the architectures. A basic Media Source is intended for a single supported local file and has a single-file loop option, whereas VLC Video is the relevant source for a playlist.

Configure the VLC Video source
- Open your streaming scene in OBS. In the Sources area, add a VLC Video source and give it a clear name, such as “Bhangra playlist.”
- Add the playlist media. In the source properties, populate the media list with the entries you have validated. OBS documents adding media items to this source; it does not promise support for every external M3U variant, so check that the list appears and plays correctly in your installation.
- Choose sequence or shuffle. Turn shuffle on only if you want the order randomized. For a programmed sequence, leave it off and check the item order.
- Enable Loop Playlist. It is on by default in OBS’s documented VLC Video settings, but verify the setting rather than assuming it remains enabled.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. OBS’s VLC source has visibility behavior options that can stop playback when hidden, pause and resume it, or keep it playing. For a single-scene continuous stream, test the selected behavior and avoid hiding the source in a way that stops the playlist.
- Fit the image and check audio. Confirm the video is framed as intended in the OBS canvas, the audio meter moves, and playback is audible through the stream output. Use recordings you have permission to broadcast.
Before connecting to YouTube, let the source play through several transitions and the end-of-list loop. Check that the next item starts as expected and that no source setting, scene change, or missing file interrupts playback.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live broadcast for this program and locate its stream key and ingest connection details.
- Copy the stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Use the key associated with this broadcast and the connection details shown by YouTube. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Select RTMPS when configuring the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the ingest details supplied for the broadcast rather than guessing a server address.
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise non-public test if appropriate for your workflow. Check that YouTube receives the stream, the picture and sound are correct, and Live Control Room reports healthy ingestion before you rely on it for a public program.
Do not publish your stream key in a playlist, a public document, or a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the new key.
5. Set the encoder for a stable signal
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Configure OBS to match the format and bitrate selected for the broadcast. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so a single bitrate is not appropriate for every stream.

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection can sustain the stream. Choose a setting your upload connection can carry reliably, and test using representative motion and audio from the actual playlist. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings during the test and broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the output settings and test again rather than assuming a nominal speed test ensures continuous delivery.
Use the resolution and frame rate that fit your source material and connection. A static image or lower-motion program may behave differently from a fast-moving dance video, so test real playlist content rather than a still test card alone.

A successful connection at the start does not prove the playlist, computer, network, encoder, and YouTube session will continue indefinitely. The documented settings do not promise uninterrupted operation or establish a maximum session duration for this particular setup. Stability depends on the files, host computer, power, network, encoder, and platform operation.

- Playback: Observe transitions, the final item, and the return to the start of the playlist.
- Audio and picture: Check that each item has the expected sound and image, with no unintended silence, frozen frame, or mismatch.
- Ingestion: Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and respond to warnings. Confirm the stream key and ingest configuration if YouTube does not receive a signal.
- Unattended operation: Test the setup for a meaningful period before relying on it, and decide who will respond if the computer, power, network, source media, or stream fails.
- Archive decision: Choose whether to archive the stream based on your separate archive permissions. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream completes if the creator chooses to archive it.
7. Do not confuse an M3U media playlist with YouTube HLS ingest
HLS also uses an M3U-derived playlist format, but YouTube’s HLS ingestion is a separate encoder protocol for sending segmented media. The M3U file that organizes your Bhangra playback is not, by itself, the HLS ingest playlist and does not make OBS send HLS segments.
If you deliberately configure an encoder for YouTube HLS ingestion, YouTube’s guidance calls for TS media segments sent using HTTPS POST/PUT, segment durations from one to four seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. Those protocol requirements are relevant only to an encoder intentionally set up for HLS; for the normal OBS workflow in this guide, use the RTMPS connection configured through Live Control Room.
8. Troubleshoot common failures
VLC Video is not listed as an OBS source
Check that VLC is installed, then restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS documents that VLC must also be 64-bit. If the source remains unavailable, verify that the installed VLC version and OBS build are compatible.

The playlist appears, but an item does not play
Test that specific entry in VLC on the same machine. Check for a wrong or moved path, an unavailable remote URL, authentication requirements, or a playlist format that the installed player does not resolve. Replace or repair the failing entry and retest the complete list in OBS.
The stream reaches YouTube but has warnings or unstable health
Compare the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance for that format. Test at a bitrate the upload connection can sustain, monitor stream health, and reduce the output settings if the connection cannot carry the current configuration reliably.
The picture streams but there is no sound
Check that the current playlist item has an audio track, that OBS’s audio meter responds during playback, and that the stream output includes that audio. Test more than one item; a quiet or silent source file can look like a streaming failure.
The playlist stops at the end or pauses when the scene changes
Verify Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties and test the end-of-list transition. Review the source’s visibility behavior: hiding the source can stop playback or pause it, depending on the selected option.

YouTube interrupts the stream over a rights match
Stop using the matched material unless you have confirmed the necessary rights. If you are licensed, contact the rightsholder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist; retain the permission and allowlist confirmation. A license alone does not guarantee that YouTube will not interrupt the stream.
